What do you keep/ never ever put in your fridge?

Following on a different thread, I am wondering why my fridge is always so full.

I live by myself, and for many years had a good sized larder fridge - which was brilliant but when my kitchen was completely redone last year, I had that replaced with a large upright 50/50 Fridge freezer.

I use a lot of salad, so this has a very large salad drawer, which is always full to capacity with lettuce, spinach, carrots, peppers, tomatoes, cucumber, celery, sugar snaps, etc.

The shelves are also crowded out, yet so many other people with smaller fridges seem to have spare room, I wonder what I am doing wrong.

I do a weekly shop - and the large proportion of this goes direct into the fridge., eggs, cooked meats (eg: ham, corned beef), ready made quiche, yoghurts, cheeses, ready made beetroot salad, coleslaw, chicken pieces/meats to be used in that weeks meals, breads (I know they say these should not be kept in fridge. but I find they all keep longer and fresher that way. I use Nimble bread - two slices a day and the occasional treat of a thin begal, but also have a packet of paninis in case someone comes to me for lunch any day

I also keep cooking apples, eating apples and easy peels in fridge to keep them longer, just putting a couple on the fruit bowl in the Living room to come to room temperature before they are likely to used

Slimmer top shelf, which is difficult for me to reach, has items which I need only occasionally, container with ground coffee for cafetier, a few cola cans, for g.childrens visits, pickles, packet of pastry,
The door shelves are taken up with milk, mayonnaise, a good selection of jams, and marmalades, etc. lemon juice, cold water for pastry, selection of flavourings for coffee, etc. the occasional tetrapack of fruit juice.

Love to hear what other people keep in their fridge.

Bijou

Never put eggs or tomatoes, potatoes in fridge.
I didn’t have fridge until 1957 when my son was ten. However there was not much to put in one because rationing didn’t end until 1954.
Cheddar cheese will last for months if well wrapped.
I think that nowadays people refridgerate too many things.

Bijou Never put ... tomatoes ... in fridge.

Agree, I find peeling tomatoes too difficult if refrigerated.

My wine and some beer I keep for occasional visit from my son or son in law are kept on racks on top shelf…along with a couple cans of coke for 15 year old grandson …no kid in our family has fizzy til at least 12 .I keep butter …spreads…cheese ….ham …coleslaw …eggs….on middle shelves ….raw meat on bottom shelf…. Salad drawer I keep veg/salad stuff I removed the second salad drawer as I’m on my own and in the space are any raw chicken /pieces. Mine is a 70/30 split. There is always space for an item or two more if I giggled the contents a little.

Tomatoes lose certain vitamins if refrigerated

‘Juggled’ contents a little😂

Out of curiosity how much do you throw out? If any.

Our upright freezer drawers are brittle and the drawer front came off of one. DH went to Homebase and bought a £24 4-drawer storage tower. The drawers are slightly smaller than the original freezer drawers but have done the trick. Indesit quoted £42 per drawer to replace them.

Never put cucumber, tomatoes, apples, eggs, butter.

Thank you, Vintagenonna. I think you have just solved my freezer problem! Too many oddments on the shelves which then fall out all over the floor, invariably meaning at least one container breakage, so thank you for your idea!

I always keep opened jars of jams, chutneys, marmalade in the fridge in door. They never seem to go mouldy then.
The only fruit that goes into the fridge is grapes, rest in fruit bowl.
Opened bottles of mayonnaise and salad cream in fridge also.

Never put eggs in fridge and so far haven’t had food poisoning.
Even in hot weather.

Bread, rolls, crumpets etc go in the freezer.
Long gone are the days of my bread bin. Bread would go mouldy very quickly in a bin.

Obviously, milk, butter and cold meats in fridge. Yoghurts etc.

It’s only common sense really knowing what to keep, where.
Also, space. Only have two drawer freezer and a one shelf.
So cannot cook and freeze very much.
But it’s sufficient for my needs.

No eggs or fruit like apples, bananas or oranges in our fridge

I had to move from a house up on a hill in Richmond, where I had a 5ft tall freezer, which I made most stuff from scratch and could have a weeks food in if we got stuck with the snow and couldnt get out. But originally that was for 3 then 2 of us and as I am on my own now it is different . Had to move to a ground floor flat and have only a skinny little freezer below the built in fridge. Drives me mad because there is so little I can get into it. I am considering getting another mid size freezer to store in a cupboard or whatever as I much prefer to make my own things and freeze them. As my back is very bad and I have days when I can not stand and cook I used to have a cooking day when I felt up to it and would make bolognaise, curry and mince or lovely shin beef with vegetables , which I froze in individual portions to get out as and when. Also used to get bramley apples and do quite a lot of them up and put them as frozen apple for a pudding and small amounts to go with pork or whatever. I never put my eggs in the fridge, keep 2/3 eating apples and oranges and bananas out of the fridge and the rest in the salad drawer. I can go shopping and buy something such as kippers , which I occasionally enjoy, but sometimes when I have them at home dont want them that day so they go in the fridge but in a tupperware sort of thing so that it doesnt smell of fish all the time. have a friend who sorts all her recipes out for the week for each days food. she certainly doesnt waste anything but I am afraid I could not be sure I would want to eat what I had planned so far ahead!!

Keep in fridge: fruit, veg and salad items, dairy except butter for spreading, meat, white wine, beer, opened partially used stuff e.g. half tin of tomatoes (decanted)
Never in fridge: bread, 🍅 tomatoes, potatoes, bananas, onions

Just heard someone on the radio say they keep their knitting wool in thr fridge to discourage moths from getting at it before the knitter does.

Jaxjacky Sat 29-Apr-23 14:51:17

I keep nail varnish in mine too.

NotSpaghetti Sat 29-Apr-23 15:20:16

M0nica - I have been rotating my silk yarn cones in the freezer for about a month now. 2/3 days each (unless I forget and then it's longer!).

My cashmere/fine wools etc go in too in rotation.

I would need several freezers to keep it in full time!

LadyHonoriaDedlock Sat 29-Apr-23 18:07:10

I don't know about yarn, I haven't heard that one before, but the cold compartment of my fridge still has quite a few rolls of film in it, mostly Fujichrome Velvia which is gorgeous to work with. In fact I must get my old Nikon FG out and blow the cobwebs off it soon, if we ever get any warm sunshine back.

Could I refrigerate my carpets?

Little so and so's are around again!

Callistemon21 Sat 29-Apr-23 21:15:53

Actually, good idea, I have some Tasmanian wool I bought and haven't yet used. I did worry about moth getting it first.
