Does it hit the sweet spot. Are you over or under? Does it matter to what you want to do in the future? I am restricting my alcohol intake. The person I would like to be goes running at dawn. The person I am chills out and carries a glass of wine round my garden in the evening. Where do you fit in?

After a brush drinking too much years ago (showbiz), I hardly drink now and I know I had a lucky escape.
A couple of drinks socially now and then and never at home alone as it affects my concentration for reading or tv.
It’s a blessing I had low tolerance and always felt so ill afterwards, otherwise I’m pretty sure I would be an alcoholic now. I had colleagues who drank as much as I did if not more and they could wake up bright and cheery the next day.

If it suits you and you can keep it under control, enjoy yourselves.

Yes, I have heard that as well, although how they manage when I say 'I really do not know, but I haven't had a drink since Easter Sunday' I am not sure,

Recommended levels vary widely across the EU (Poland has the highest) so one wonders on what firm evidence it is based here.

My doctor friend tells me they mentally doubled the answer when asking a patient how much alcohol they consume. Hey Bijou...👍🌷

There is no harm in drinking and no virtue in not drinking.

Like everything it is only when done to excess it causes problems and that applies to almost everything, including exercise, eating, choose between anorexia and obesity, but I am sure neither of those will stop you enjoying your supper this evening, with or without a glass of wine.

I wouldn't even reach 14 units in a year!
Nor would mr J!

I do drink but very rarely just 1 or 2 gin and tonics once a week or even only once a fortnight. I had an alcoholic stepmother as a child and swore I would never become like her. She came home regularly with police having found her passed out in the gutter and would do anything for the next drink. Very sad really as it ruined her life.

We look forward to wine o clock each night! 2 glasses each usually- more if entertaining!
Both fit and well, not overweight, don’t smoke, eat a very healthy diet, walk every day for at least an hour and garden a lot.
Wake up feeling fine! Not so if I eat a load of carbs!

Bijou can we have a party for you? Despite this thread I will definitely bring wine and flowers

Happy 100th Birthday for next week, Bijou. Definitely worth toasting with your favourite tipple.

Stout - full of B Vitamins and iron. [wink}

I swim three times a week and walk 3 miles a day ….so wine in my garden is deserved ! As no doubt yours is !? AND …if it’s not deserved …my mum used to say “ have it now and deserve it later” … worked for her as she lived til 93.

I think that is the happy medium I am looking for. Although I love your Mum’s advice too. I have reached an age where a few drinks in an evening means I don’t enjoy the next day quite as much. Thanks everyone for all your interesting replies.

In my sixties and still work full time - my job can be stressful so at the end of the week a couple of Friday night G&T’s are a treat - then share a bottle wine with hubbie on Saturday - that is my lot - no alcohol Sunday to Thursday- I think I would be under 14 units!! And am in the swimming pool at 7am in the week too

Marydoll Fri 28-Apr-23 18:45:35

Many years ago, I worked in NHS finance.
Part of my job was to pay the invoices for Guinness, Sweetheart stout, whisky etc.
It was coded under Pharmacy and was dispensed as a pick me up for patients.

Saggi Fri 28-Apr-23 18:39:23

Oh and it’s the truth ….Guinness is good for you! Full of iron.

Oh, I forgot to comment on alcohol. I drink very little nowadays, it just doesn’t do anything much for me. I haven’t lost any weight due to my abstinence, which is a bit annoying!

We drank most regularly when we were living abroad. Life could be difficult at times and a glass of wine in the evening was a way to relax, I suppose. I grew up with a Welsh chapel background and drink just wasn’t a thing in our house. Mum and dad would have a bottle of cider once in a blue moon and a sherry at Christmas.

Their neighbours over the road, though, were two elderly ladies, sisters, I think. They had a delivery from a local vintners every week! I recall very clearly seeing the liveried van arrive. They must have been half-pickled all the time but they seemed to survive well enough.

Greciangirl Fri 28-Apr-23 18:05:48

Well! What a virtuous lot of grans you all are.

Hardly anyone drinks, and the few that do are definitely under the recommended guidelines.

Personally, I enjoy two glasses of wine on Fridays and Saturdays only.

When I was much younger I consumed an awful lot more.
But being married to an alcoholic ( now deceased), I gave up drinking for ten years but went back to drinking sensibly after he died.

I don’t crave alcohol during the week, but enjoy my four glasses of a weekend.

Lizbethann55 Fri 28-Apr-23 18:04:47

I like a glass of red wine. I like a G&T. I like a glass of fizz. I like a light beer in summer and I like sharing a jug of sangria when on holiday. They taste much nicer than lemonade or coke. But I don't NEED them . I find this presumption that if we like alcohol we must have a problem a bit offensive.

I think I might just have to grow old disgracefully. However I am still contemplating the options. Hours in the gym or lunches out with friends and where is the happy medium?

They aren’t mutually exclusive options. I quite like doing both.

I'm in your minority. Life is for living. Made it this far ......

Blondiescot Fri 28-Apr-23 17:27:29

My mother spent the last few weeks of her pregnancy with me in the maternity hospital, and they used to come round every evening with a bottle of Sweetheart Stout for the mums-to-be as it was supposedly good for them.

Arto1s Fri 28-Apr-23 17:21:04

I know I drink way too much red wine. One of these days I’ll try cutting back, before it’s too late!

I haven’t drunk alcohol for nearly 20 years

I've got just over 30 years without any alcohol
