The Queen used to be labelled by many as ‘the most famous woman in the world’, not by some I know.

Not sure about the most famous man.

Who would you define as either nowadays?

David Attenborough.
In the past Attlee who gave us pensions and the NHS.

My husband and I were debating and had decided probably it would be Putin. My husband said "ask Alexa". She said "Mmm Lawrence Lewelyn-Bowan". It has took me 10 minutes to stop laughing.

She just told me the same 😂😂😂

I'm sure Lawrence will be very flattered.

I would say Mick Jagger is well known world wide, they have covered a lot of years and the music is part of our culture now and they have continued to tour?

I just asked our Alexa and she said it was Noel Edmonds!

I think Putin, just as the most famous, not admirable.

Perhaps when we only need to use one of their names for everyone to know instantly who they are, they've hit the jackpot.

Perhaps Elon Musk hasn't quite made it yet
Nor Bill Gates

Boris?

Everyone knows who he is in this country but perhaps not the world!
Would anyone automatically think of Karloff, Pasternak or Yeltsin. Or Jovanović?

I think if you asked most people in, let’s say Timbuktu they would look at you sideways if you asked who Meghan was, but,if you asked them who Putin is, they would know.
I’m afraid you give her far too much credibility.

My DGD has been given the name of a famous film star from my era.
I protested as I thought it would be a burden for her but as her DP said no one's heard of her now.
Not quite true because everyone my age including some teachers will have heard of her famous namesake.

On another note. Did anyone hear on Woman's Hour today, a small child's question about the coronation?
"Will the queen be a man now?"

"^Will the queen be a man now?^"

I should imagine David Attenborough is well known around the world for his travels, books and documentaries over many decades. Does that make him famous?

That was my thought.

I'm ignoring infamous or celeb.

Grandma70s Thu 27-Apr-23 14:41:56

Ed Sheeran? I vaguely know the name, but I wouldn’t know him if I fell over him.

eazybee Thu 27-Apr-23 14:28:39

Just for the purpose of accuracy I didn't say that MM was famous, I said she was notorious in the western world, because the massive amount of publicity she orchestrates attracts attention, plus her face plastered on so many front pages on every news stand. Difficult to avoid.
I doubt if she has staying power because she achieves very little except discord.

The wife of the second son of the king of a small island off the coast of Europe is probably not that famous around the world.

You’ve just put Omid Scobie out of a job! 😂

volver3 Thu 27-Apr-23 12:43:52

No, I know. False modesty. Why did I write such a thing? 🤣

Anniebach Thu 27-Apr-23 12:42:39

Surely not volver 😲

volver3 Thu 27-Apr-23 12:38:38

I'm just bemused that people think the Duchess of Sussex is the most famous/notorious woman in the world.

Not Greta, not Hillary Clinton, not Serena Williams, not the Princess of Wales....

The wife of the second son of the king of a small island off the coast of Europe is probably not that famous around the whole world. I could be wrong, of course. confused

NotSpaghetti Thu 27-Apr-23 12:38:32

I think it will be a very famous actor if we are thinking worldwide..
Maybe Tom Cruise..🤔
