The Queen used to be labelled by many as ‘the most famous woman in the world’, not by some I know.

Not sure about the most famous man.

Who would you define as either nowadays?

halfpint1 Thu 27-Apr-23 12:36:22

David Attenborough, Ed Sheerin, not in my world whatsoever.

It depends upon whether we mean famous or infamous, although a person can be both, as in the ghastly Andrew Tate. In terms of knowing straight away who they are if I see their photograph, or in the unlikely event of seeing them queueing at my local Co-op; I would say the late Queen, Elon Musk, Putin, Trump. All very recognisable, irrespective of whether I admire them or not.

Meghan Markle is the most notorious woman in the western world at present; ten years time, Meghan who? (possibly).
Man? Probably Trump as in most known/recognised, but infamous. Overtaken by Putin.
Film stars/footballers Out of touch there.

Dalai Lama. The Pope,

I would have said the Dalai Lama a few weeks ago, but the video of him with the young boy has troubled me.

The Pope. Bill Gates. Michelle Obama. Ed Sheeran (at moment).

Every time the news is on, Ed Sheeran seems to get a mention for one reason or another.
Why? He sings nicely and I'm sure he's a lovely man but ?

Apparently Dwayne Johnson is the most famous person in the world.

? Me neither 😂

Dalai Lama. The Pope,

I think the reason Zelensky has been mooted here is because he is a brave man, a David to Putin's Goliath and the world loves a hero. I think we worry about his personal safety for both him and his family. I'm inclined to agree with Fanny, whilst we will find him very recognisable, I'm not sure that would be the case on a world stage depending on cultural and other differences, what do they think of him in for example in say, India or a country in Africa where there are umpteen different strata of society, who they revere or hate maybe a person/people unknown to us.

I think possibly there is a subliminal desire to look towards someone who is heroic rather than people who are famous for nothing in particular, and for fatuous reasons and god knows we have enough of those. .

I'm not sure how many of the younger generation would have heard of Einstein ether!

The most 'searched for' person on the internet is Andrew Tate so in that respect he is the most famous. Many older folk won't even have heard of him but teenage boys all know him, and girls are feeling the effects of his misogynistic teachings along with female teachers. Schools are actually holding anti-Tate classes for the youngsters. This is of course relative to now and not to people who are long gone.

Maddy I think that it was probably made up, as are a lot of these type of things

Interesting. I’m giving it much thought…
It’s notable that we lost three of the most people close together last year - The Queen, The Pope and Pele.
Also, yesterday I was listening to Ma’am Darling by Craig Brown (again).
Apparently in 1984 (in Tatler, I think) Boy George was voted the most famous person in Britain, followed by Her Majesty.

As ever, it depends on who’s doing the voting.

Norah Thu 27-Apr-23 09:52:08

The Pope. Bill Gates. Michelle Obama. Ed Sheeran (at moment).

FannyCornforth Thu 27-Apr-23 09:34:17

I think that in this case famous could equal recognisable.
So Einstein is a very good shout.
Like Hitler, Gandhi or the Queen. A strong image.
I don’t think that Zelenskyy is very recognisable.

TerriBull Thu 27-Apr-23 09:30:43

Very dependent on where you live and who resonates with any individual or is on their radar. Who we perceive at our age as famous, there will be those who won't have heard of them, conversely there will be so called "influencers" and such like who might assume great importance with maybe one demographic, but personally no idea! One would imagine that world leaders, particularly those who past and present have or do present a threat would at least be known through notiariaty, but I wouldn't bank on that.

Yammy Thu 27-Apr-23 09:28:41

Einstein came up with a theory that is still used today and has yet to be disputed I think it is probably used worldwide.
President Zalensky for standing buy and encouraging his people. Putin though one I would rather forget.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 27-Apr-23 09:18:00

President Zelensky was the first person that sprung to my mind as famous in a good way.

All the others probably come under the infamous category.

Sorchame Thu 27-Apr-23 09:12:36

Currently, I would say Elon Musk.

I guess who is most famous to some depends on their age and interests...
My children and grandchildren would definitely have a different name in the hat to me!

Juliet27 Thu 27-Apr-23 08:44:40

I should imagine David Attenborough is well known around the world for his travels, books and documentaries over many decades. Does that make him famous?

NanaDana Thu 27-Apr-23 08:19:40

Presumably, your referring to the late Queen in terms of "used to be the most famous", means that you're looking for candidates who are still with us. The Obamas have consistently emerged as "the most admired" in surveys in recent years, but that doesn't really equate to "most famous", particularly as they aren't so much in the public eye these days. Trump? If it was "infamous" we're looking for, he'd certainly be a front-runner, along with Putin. The poisonous, arrested adolescent Harry would also be up there with them in my book. Famous? Sorry, but I'm really struggling here. Sad that I find it easier to define the baddies. A reflection of the current state of the world in which we are living? If we extend it to those who have passed, yes, the late Queen would be my choice, probably along with JFK.

M0nica Thu 27-Apr-23 08:09:29

Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Vladimir Putin, Donald Trump, Duke and Duchess of Sussex ('Meghan' and 'Harry').

All except the first, infamous rather than famous

FannyCornforth Thu 27-Apr-23 08:05:41

fiorentina51

The Pope is still alive.

I was referring to Joseph Ratzinger, Pope Benedict XVI

Meryleene Thu 27-Apr-23 07:48:39

Trump, Elton John.
Malala, Greta T, Princess of Wales.

NotSpaghetti Thu 27-Apr-23 07:41:49

Was just about to say that fiorentina

... and Churchill and the Queen are not.

Katie59 Thu 27-Apr-23 07:41:47

Those living.
Fame or Infamy, those that get the most publicity include Trump, Biden, Xi, King Charles, Prince Harry, Zelensky, Putin, it all depends who influences your life.

Ladyleftfieldlover Thu 27-Apr-23 07:38:44

I would have said that trump was the most infamous man!

fiorentina51 Thu 27-Apr-23 07:35:34

The Pope is still alive.
