To me......being called 'woke' is a compliment

The word 'woke' simply means being aware. However, it has been hi-jacked by those seeking to impose their ridiculous ideology on the rest of us. Sadly, too many people are only too eager to be seen as trendy and happily embrace their nonsense without considering the true agenda behind it all.

To me "wokery" has become intertwined with lots of rubbish about pulling down statues and people of my generation being made to feel they should apologize for what their grandparents did in the empire, as well as white privilage. My parents did not feel very privilaged in their tiny two up two down with no bathroom and Ive done more than my share for society so I have no patience with all this trendy garbage.

And there you are, proving my point.

That's what they want you to believe biglouis.

Seems like you've fallen for it.

I'll be back later to explain white privilege, because that's not what you think it is either.

I’d like to be known as a kelpie too volver as it’s a beautiful Australian dog

oh, I'd forgotten about them.

I was thinking about this.

Either would be fine!

I am fascinated - and horrified - by how the right persistently twist woke into new meanings and insults to further culture wars that are entirely of their own making.

I’m always pleased to be on their wrong side.

Honestly, you’d think people weren’t aware of social injustice before this word came out of America a few years ago.
But if being called this new term makes people happier then great.

1938.

Leadbelly.

Woke is an African-American term, it means 'to be awake to injustice in society'

But when people’s views on aspects of injustice in society differ, as I’ve often seen demonstrated on GN, each side claiming that they are suffering, the injustice, the terms woke or not woke are used as self praise and/or an insult.

I've posted on a few threads about this. When it comes to being 'woke', I'm firmly with the inimitable Kathy Burke, who said: “They’re calling you ‘woke’ if you call out bad things, basically. If you’re not racist, you’re woke. If you’re not homophobic, oh, you’re woke. Be woke, kids. Be woke. Be wide awake and f***ing call it out.”

I'd like to be known as a kelpie now, because I have decided that "kelpie" means a retired Scottish person.

No?

We don't get to choose our own meaning for words.

"Woke is an African-American term, it means 'to be awake to injustice in society'", Natasha Devon explained on his talk show.

Nothing whatsoever to do with trying to make new silly definitions like the ones Wizend mentions.

Mollygo Sat 29-Apr-23 09:24:20

Insult or compliment, woke means exactly what the person using it intends.

volver3 Sat 29-Apr-23 09:19:29

You've just made that up Witzend because someone has misled you about it. That's not what "woke" means at all.

Witzend Sat 29-Apr-23 09:17:52

To me it will depend on the degree of ‘wokery’. If that includes having to use terms like ‘birthing person’ instead of ‘mother’, and various euphemisms for ‘woman’, then I’m happy to be un-woke, but still (I hope) kind, caring, and lacking in prejudice towards LBGT people.

volver3 Sat 29-Apr-23 09:17:44

I agree 100% Franbern

This silly 'new' word WOKE. Exactly what does it mean. It is meant to be some sort of insult.

However, it seems to me that anyone who is woke means that they are caring, considerate people. People who really care about other people, and how they are managing and how they feel. It is 'woke' people who give donations to food banks, and give up their time to run them. Who also work in charity ships and similar.

Being woke just means being nice to other people, and walking in other peoples shoes.

Rather like Newspeak in 1984, somehow - being kind and caring has been made an insult in our Brave New World.
