What is your favourite poorly food?

Following a discussion about a GNers friend who was off her food I wonder what you favourite poorly food was?
A few days ago I was felled by the onset of the worst sore throat I have ever had. My GP diagnosed a strep throat infection. For days even if I had wanted to eat I couldn't as my throat was just too sore. Even drinking water, which I did out of necessity was excruciating. ( I wondered if the accompanying headaches were part of the illness or caffeine withdrawal). Today I am feeling slightly more human so I have just reverted to my favourite childhood " poorly food". Two softly boiled eggs beaten up in a cup with butter and salt. It does have to be in a cup. I tried it in a bowl once and it just wasn't the same. It did take its toll on my throat, but I did enjoy it.
What is your favourite , go to, poorly food?

Oh @lizbethann55 the memories have just flooded back!!

My lovely late mum used to make me 'eggs in a cup' - two hard boiled eggs, that she used to chop up with a hefty spoonful of Heinz salad cream. It was divine. At Granny's it was always Heinz chicken soup with a freshly floured, buttered bap (until they changed the chicken soup recipe - then it just wasn't the same).

Nowadays my 'go to' is steamed white cabbage (or sweetheart) a big bowlful sometimes with a drizzle of mint sauce if my stomach can take it!

Thank you Blondiescot for the eggs-in-a-up info - might give that a try, poorly or not!

Me too, anything with mince is going to make me feel better!

I have a raging mouth infection after a molar extraction at the moment and all I can eat is eggy bread. Used to love Lucozade and the yellow film when I was a child. Best thing about being ill.

Granmarderby10 Mon 01-May-23 19:53:34

White crustless buttered toast.

Lucozade original (I suspect it tasted better from a tall glass
bottle wrapped in mysterious amber coloured film)

Bovril with dry toast.

Orange jelly

Chunky boneless cod steaks in a butter sauce (no veg)

original hot Ribena
Definitely NO tea until I’m better!😔

Buttered toast
Sausage sandwich
Marmite on toast...
Mint ice cream for a sore throat!

A plate of spinach with poached eggs on top always makes me feel good if I'm a bit under the weather. The eggs just to perk it up a bit - I could eat spinach all day, every day! My first meal after getting home from hospital when I'd had my tonsils out at age 6 was a plate of spinach with a bit of meat and other roast veg on a separate (much smaller) plate!

If I'm actually feeling nauseous, then just plain toast with tomato soup...

Toast and strawberry jam,it used to be my grans homemade Blackberry jelly.
When working I caught Shigella Dysentry and lived off flat high-calorie lemonade left to go flat with extra sugar for a fortnight. Like Sago, I've had Campylobacter and lived off the same then.

As a child, if I was poorly my mum used to soft boil an egg and add squares of soft white white bread and butter. Salt and pepper. Delicious.
Nowadays, it's poached eggs on buttered toast.

Two soft boiled eggs with bread and butter cut into fingers. My dear mum always gave us that when we were poorly.

Boiled eggs and soldiers for me, or some home-made soup (I love the sound of Redhead56's onion soup).

Could someone please explain eggs in a cup? What do you do? It's not something that's ever crossed my path ...

An egg in a cup is just boiled eggs (done to however you like them), mashed up in a cup with butter and seasoning.

If you don't fancy food, hot Ribena is the go to for me and my kids. When each got Covid, I had to scour the shops for bottles of Ribena (not the cartons).

Juggernaut Mon 01-May-23 18:22:12

Mashed potato with added fried onions!

CanadianGran Mon 01-May-23 18:10:59

I'll be a bit different here and say tinned fruit cocktail. It slips down easily and doesn't make you queasy.

The first day or two with covid that was all I ate. Then I moved on to toast with butter and honey.

Mine would be a chip butty.....

Lexisgranny Mon 01-May-23 17:57:21

As a child it was always bread and milk. Cubes of fresh white bread covered with boiling milk and sprinkled with brown sugar. As an young bride, feeling poorly, that’s what I asked my husband to make for me, He appeared with a tray holding a pint of milk in a bottle and a slice of bread - it didn’t quite hit the spot!

Tinned tomato soup for me too, with grated cheese and soft white bread with lashings of butter. Or a chip butty on white bread, dripping with butter and vinegar.

I don’t really care for chips or white bread if I’m well. confused

Heinz tomato soup with cheese on toast

grannysyb Sun 30-Apr-23 14:07:19

Mine is toast with homemade marmalade, when I had my tonsils out and my mother asked the doctor what I could eat and they said that I could anything that I wanted, I asked for this!

Dee1012 Sun 30-Apr-23 11:53:39

A fish finger sandwich... white bread and lots of butter!

3dognight Sun 30-Apr-23 09:53:29

Strangely I crave battered cod and curry sauce from my local chippy.

Otherwise it’s mashed potatoes and parsley sauce and frozen peas.

Chicken soup with a slice of white bread to dip in.

I just rotate those three things around till I feel abit better.
