What is your favourite poorly food?

Following a discussion about a GNers friend who was off her food I wonder what you favourite poorly food was?
A few days ago I was felled by the onset of the worst sore throat I have ever had. My GP diagnosed a strep throat infection. For days even if I had wanted to eat I couldn't as my throat was just too sore. Even drinking water, which I did out of necessity was excruciating. ( I wondered if the accompanying headaches were part of the illness or caffeine withdrawal). Today I am feeling slightly more human so I have just reverted to my favourite childhood " poorly food". Two softly boiled eggs beaten up in a cup with butter and salt. It does have to be in a cup. I tried it in a bowl once and it just wasn't the same. It did take its toll on my throat, but I did enjoy it.
What is your favourite , go to, poorly food?

Birds custard, made with half evaporated milk, half semi-skimmed. If it’s got thinly sliced bananas in it, even better.

Rice.

In any recipe/version. Indian Kheer dessert. Mexican with beans. Risotto. Artichoke salad. Fried. Breakfast with syrup.

Jam doughnuts!

Ohh no, that remedy wouldn’t be for me….just the thought of softly boiled eggs let alone in a cup would make me feel worse but then I do like my boiled eggs like bullets. Grapes and lucozade always help me through illness. When I was feeling nauseous as a child I was always given a spoonful of bicarbonate of soda in water. Now Alkaseltzer does the trick, but only the original version.

Chicken soup really does seem to be a comfort.

tidyskatemum Sat 29-Apr-23 14:30:18

Heinz tomato soup, though you practically need a bank loan to buy a can now!

Foxygloves Sat 29-Apr-23 14:32:57

Homemade chicken soup or Heinz tomato with white toast (HOT) with lashings of butter!

Tomato soup and toast

I’m just recovering slowly from covid. I also suffer from caffeine withdrawal in the first few days, I felt sick so didn’t fancy my usual coffee. I drank lucozade instead and it seemed to help. Now I’m feeling better, and my taste is coming back I’m with growstuff Jam doughnuts !

I like Chookie eggs (as my mother called them) Lizbethann.

I remember being given them when I was recovering from scarlet fever.

Had major surgery for an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm 10 years ago now, and I was v. poorly afterwards, having been split open like the proverbial kipper. Home after 10 days, then several weeks to recuperate, during which time, I was living off cottage pie, shepherds pie, lasagne, spagh bol, .. virtually anything with mince was about all I could manage, and even that was a struggle initially. Mince still tends to be my "go to" food if I'm poorly. As for breakfast, 2 soft-boiled eggs on toast is my invalid's choice.

Knorr chicken noodle soup

Dare I tiptoe in and say I am never ill? It would be 2 soft boiled eggs with toast, butter and coffee.

pascal30 Sat 29-Apr-23 14:47:13

we always had lucozade but now it would probably be marmite on toast and a boiled egg

62Granny Sat 29-Apr-23 14:52:31

Probably toast with butter and either Jam or possibly dairylea cheese spread. If I felt like a bit of food scrambled egg and toast.

shysal Sat 29-Apr-23 15:03:47

Definitely boiled eggs with soldiers.

Blondiescot Sat 29-Apr-23 15:07:47

Oh yes, definitely an egg in a cup! Or Marmite on hot buttered toast. And I vividly remember knowing I must be ill as a child when my mum bought Lucozade - the proper original stuff in a glass bottle with the orange cellophane round it. I think you could only buy it from the chemist then too.
Homemade chicken soup too - and I never buy tinned soup - but very occasionally, if I'm not feeling well, i do get a notion for tinned tomato soup. Mind you, the last time I gave in and bought Heinz tomato soup, it didn't taste nearly as nice as I remembered it - was a bit too sweet and had an odd metallic aftertaste.

Soup or toast. Also a lightly poached egg and a piece of bread and butter. As I recover I like poached fish and boiled potatoes with a bit of butter or parsley sauce.

When I was recently right off my food after a very nasty infection and 5 weeks of ABs - everything was tasting weird or horrible - one of the very few things I fancied was soft white bread with Dairylea spread. Craving for the latter goes back to childhood - we only ever had it at a granny’s house for tea (twice a year if that) - my mother would never buy it.
On the bright side, I lost over 5 kg without even trying! 🙂

That was dangerous Charleygirl hmm
Tempting fate
When I am out of sorts my comfort food is also buttered toast with homemade marmalade, hot tea, or hot chocolate.
Rice pudding, oranges,
Eggs I'd need to be quite well for.

I roast a chicken then take all meat off the bones , then boil all the carcass , strain the liquid. I then add vegetables, a stock cube and lovely chunks of fresh chicken . Pour into a bowl and eat with nice bread and real butter. Chicken soup for the soul

Perfect when poorly

kittylester Sat 29-Apr-23 15:19:09

I used to love eggs in a cup as a child and tried it when I was ill last year. It was horrid!

My relationship with eggs has changed over the years.

Grandmabatty Sat 29-Apr-23 15:54:36

Definitely chicken soup. I've recently had a bout of sickness and only wanted soup. I love a boiled egg normally but didn't enjoy it when I was recuperating. Like Blondiescot I liked Heinz tomato soup but I'm finding it too sweet, thick and artificial tasting now. I can't have lucozade much as I love it. Too much sugar.

Mine is scrambled egg on buttered toast.
