Following a discussion about a GNers friend who was off her food I wonder what you favourite poorly food was?
A few days ago I was felled by the onset of the worst sore throat I have ever had. My GP diagnosed a strep throat infection. For days even if I had wanted to eat I couldn't as my throat was just too sore. Even drinking water, which I did out of necessity was excruciating. ( I wondered if the accompanying headaches were part of the illness or caffeine withdrawal). Today I am feeling slightly more human so I have just reverted to my favourite childhood " poorly food". Two softly boiled eggs beaten up in a cup with butter and salt. It does have to be in a cup. I tried it in a bowl once and it just wasn't the same. It did take its toll on my throat, but I did enjoy it.
What is your favourite , go to, poorly food?

as a child bread and milk warmed with sprinkling of sugar.

hulahoop

Mine is scrambled egg on buttered toast.

They mustn't be over-done though.

I remember recovering from tonsillitis years ago and DH made me scrambled eggs, they could have bounced off the plate and across the room.

When I was a child it was Heinz tomato soup with a buttered roll. As an adult it's scrambled eggs on toast.

Chip butty with butter and loads of vinegar

A bowl of Rice Krispies, Greek yogurt, a small amount of fruit and plenty of cold milk. Yum as my DGS would say.

Thick white lightly toasted bread with real butter and soft boiled eggs. Weak tea with just the tiniest drop of milk to wash it down, this from someone who normally drinks strong black coffee by the pint!

If its a gastric problem then Lucozade was my cure all but can't buy it here. Its dry toast to start with then buttered toast.
For any other illness Heinz tomato soup and crackers.

Home made onion soup with lots of beef stock and garlic or homemade green veg soup with lots of garlic.

Mashed potato with grated cheese on top melted under the grill until it’s brown.

I make a chicken and lemon casserole, using chicken thighs on the bone, casserole vegetables, stock cube, water and 3 fresh lemons. It really perks me up and I feel better the next day.

I was so ill with campylobacter, nothing but water for 18 days.
I dreamt of tea and homemade chicken soup.
Little sips of tea for a day or two then the soup, sadly it just tasted of salt.

I’m another who relies on Heinz tomato soup and/or scrambled eggs. Interesting that so many of us like the same things.

When I was very ill with mastoiditis as a child in 1949, just about the only things I would eat were boiled eggs. Since rationing was still in force at that date, I suspect I was given everybody else’s egg ration in addition to mine.

Not eggs in any shape or form, any time at all I'm afraid!

Chicken soup (home made) is my usual remedy whenever any of us is under the weather. Heinz tomato is my favourite. I usually put a pinch of curry powder through it or a spoonful of yogurt which takes away the metallic after-taste,

Scribbles

Cheese on thick toast with HP sauce.

Oh, now I'm not feeling poorly at the moment, but I could demolish that right now!

Orzo tossed in chimmichuri

Thankfully very rarely ill but chicken soup, a soft boiled egg and soldiers or readybrek would hit the spot for me.

Bread and milk. Must be white bread with the crusts cut off and buttered and laid across the top for the contrast between the salty butter and the sweet bread and milk.

merlotgran Sat 29-Apr-23 20:09:26

Toast and marmite with Heinz tomato soup.

Mashed banana sandwich, must be white bread. My Mum always made me this.

If I'm poorly can't cook/digest well so...there are some lovely tinned soups these days. Have a stock in and it's a mix of brands. Just open and microwave.

Also very digestible are good quality tinned fruits in fruit juice I like them with coconut yoghurt a new find.

Soft brioche bread is easier to go down than some other breads.

Agree about the flavour of Heinz Tomato - not on my list.

Heinz tomato soup and boiled eggs,

GagaJo Sat 29-Apr-23 19:34:41

Ginger ale when ill. Toast or ginger biscuits when recuperating.

When I was a child, it was bread and warm milk.

Treebee Sat 29-Apr-23 19:18:51

In our family cheese and potato pie is called ‘illness dinner’. It’s just mashed potato with added cheese, popped under the grill. Served with peas, and ketchup if you fancy it, it’s very soothing.

Have to agree with the chicken soup fans. Homemade chicken broth is my go to when I feel even a teeny bit under the weather. Soul food.
