Following a discussion about a GNers friend who was off her food I wonder what you favourite poorly food was?
A few days ago I was felled by the onset of the worst sore throat I have ever had. My GP diagnosed a strep throat infection. For days even if I had wanted to eat I couldn't as my throat was just too sore. Even drinking water, which I did out of necessity was excruciating. ( I wondered if the accompanying headaches were part of the illness or caffeine withdrawal). Today I am feeling slightly more human so I have just reverted to my favourite childhood " poorly food". Two softly boiled eggs beaten up in a cup with butter and salt. It does have to be in a cup. I tried it in a bowl once and it just wasn't the same. It did take its toll on my throat, but I did enjoy it.
What is your favourite , go to, poorly food?

Scotch broth soup liquidised with Scottish plain loaf bread.

Funny how so many of us crave white bread when we’re off colour. Probably most of us eat brown or granary normally. I normally love seeded brown bread.

Visgir1 Sat 29-Apr-23 18:25:04

Cheese sandwich in white bread.

Trifle.
Jam and butter on soft baps with sweet tea.

Semolina. Quick to make, sweet, creamy and comforting.

Mashed potato and gravy. My husband has become an ace it making it just right for me, when needed! grin

Tinned cream of tomato soup, macaroni cheese.

No eggs, I really dislike them, as for runny yokes, yuk, yuk, yuk.

Chicken soup, plain yogurt or toast for me.

Whenever I am unwell (ill), the only thing I wish to have is toast with marmalade and a large mug of tea.

As I get better I then go onto comfort foods, sausage and mash being a favourite.

I normally only have home-made soups, but - again, when unwell crave packet chicken noodle soup.

I normally love eggs in mos forms, boiled and poached being favourites. When I was a child my Mum would make me mashed potatoes and break a soft boiled egg over them, Yummy!!!!!

Mine is scrambled egg on buttered toast.

Definitely chicken soup. I've recently had a bout of sickness and only wanted soup. I love a boiled egg normally but didn't enjoy it when I was recuperating. Like Blondiescot I liked Heinz tomato soup but I'm finding it too sweet, thick and artificial tasting now. I can't have lucozade much as I love it. Too much sugar.

I used to love eggs in a cup as a child and tried it when I was ill last year. It was horrid!

My relationship with eggs has changed over the years.

I roast a chicken then take all meat off the bones , then boil all the carcass , strain the liquid. I then add vegetables, a stock cube and lovely chunks of fresh chicken . Pour into a bowl and eat with nice bread and real butter. Chicken soup for the soul

Perfect when poorly

That was dangerous Charleygirl hmm
Tempting fate
When I am out of sorts my comfort food is also buttered toast with homemade marmalade, hot tea, or hot chocolate.
Rice pudding, oranges,
Eggs I'd need to be quite well for.

When I was recently right off my food after a very nasty infection and 5 weeks of ABs - everything was tasting weird or horrible - one of the very few things I fancied was soft white bread with Dairylea spread. Craving for the latter goes back to childhood - we only ever had it at a granny’s house for tea (twice a year if that) - my mother would never buy it.
On the bright side, I lost over 5 kg without even trying! 🙂

Soup or toast. Also a lightly poached egg and a piece of bread and butter. As I recover I like poached fish and boiled potatoes with a bit of butter or parsley sauce.

Blondiescot Sat 29-Apr-23 15:07:47

Oh yes, definitely an egg in a cup! Or Marmite on hot buttered toast. And I vividly remember knowing I must be ill as a child when my mum bought Lucozade - the proper original stuff in a glass bottle with the orange cellophane round it. I think you could only buy it from the chemist then too.
Homemade chicken soup too - and I never buy tinned soup - but very occasionally, if I'm not feeling well, i do get a notion for tinned tomato soup. Mind you, the last time I gave in and bought Heinz tomato soup, it didn't taste nearly as nice as I remembered it - was a bit too sweet and had an odd metallic aftertaste.

Definitely boiled eggs with soldiers.

62Granny Sat 29-Apr-23 14:52:31

Probably toast with butter and either Jam or possibly dairylea cheese spread. If I felt like a bit of food scrambled egg and toast.

pascal30 Sat 29-Apr-23 14:47:13

we always had lucozade but now it would probably be marmite on toast and a boiled egg

Charleygirl5 Sat 29-Apr-23 14:45:20

Dare I tiptoe in and say I am never ill? It would be 2 soft boiled eggs with toast, butter and coffee.

MrsKen33 Sat 29-Apr-23 14:41:31

Knorr chicken noodle soup

NanaDana Sat 29-Apr-23 14:38:12

Had major surgery for an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm 10 years ago now, and I was v. poorly afterwards, having been split open like the proverbial kipper. Home after 10 days, then several weeks to recuperate, during which time, I was living off cottage pie, shepherds pie, lasagne, spagh bol, .. virtually anything with mince was about all I could manage, and even that was a struggle initially. Mince still tends to be my "go to" food if I'm poorly. As for breakfast, 2 soft-boiled eggs on toast is my invalid's choice.

Blossoming Sat 29-Apr-23 14:36:37

I like Chookie eggs (as my mother called them) Lizbethann.

I remember being given them when I was recovering from scarlet fever.

Katyj Sat 29-Apr-23 14:36:35

I’m just recovering slowly from covid. I also suffer from caffeine withdrawal in the first few days, I felt sick so didn’t fancy my usual coffee. I drank lucozade instead and it seemed to help. Now I’m feeling better, and my taste is coming back I’m with growstuff Jam doughnuts !
