What is your favourite poorly food?

Following a discussion about a GNers friend who was off her food I wonder what you favourite poorly food was?
A few days ago I was felled by the onset of the worst sore throat I have ever had. My GP diagnosed a strep throat infection. For days even if I had wanted to eat I couldn't as my throat was just too sore. Even drinking water, which I did out of necessity was excruciating. ( I wondered if the accompanying headaches were part of the illness or caffeine withdrawal). Today I am feeling slightly more human so I have just reverted to my favourite childhood " poorly food". Two softly boiled eggs beaten up in a cup with butter and salt. It does have to be in a cup. I tried it in a bowl once and it just wasn't the same. It did take its toll on my throat, but I did enjoy it.
What is your favourite , go to, poorly food?

Tinydancer re Ribena, Is it my imagination or did it used to be more of a syrup?🤔

Lilyflower Sun 07-May-23 08:37:02

Heinz chicken soup and dunked Digestives.

Hot Ribena for a cold or chest infection. Sadly not quite the same now as even the regular one has sweetener in it.

Caramme

Birds custard, made with half evaporated milk, half semi-skimmed. If it’s got thinly sliced bananas in it, even better.

Ooh- I’ve got a sore throat and I just bought some birds custard ( it’s hard to find here ). Deffo going to try this !

Toast with butter cut into quarters

Marmite on toast!

I feel for you with the throat problems.last year I had a terrible bout of tonsillitis with a large ulcer on the tonsil, even water came gushing out. On that occasion I found small sips of sparkling water helped as it also cleared some of the guns which normal swallowing deals with. My voice also disappeared!

My earliest memory is of my mum giving me chicken soup after a nasty bout of measles. Thank goodness for vaccinations now!

Mashed potato. Never ever eat it even I'm well but it's such a comfort when feeling poorly

Kryptonite Thu 04-May-23 17:24:26

Mashed potato made into a volcano with a bit of Bisto gravy.

Hot toast with butter, or scrambled / poached egg on toast, swede and potato mash, cheese and tomato sandwich. All of the above served with a nice cup of tea

Yoghurt

Thanks everyone for replying. It is such fun reading them all. What is very evident is how many of us revert to our childhood memories when we need comfort.

A cup of tea with thick toasted white bread & marmite or an egg custard.

albertina Wed 03-May-23 19:25:34

Jam sandwiches ( soft white bread only please)

lizzypopbottle Wed 03-May-23 18:58:33

Lizbethann55 boiled egg chopped up with butter in a cup? Oh yes! My mother made it for me if I was poorly and it always made me better! And Yes! Definitely in a cup! It wouldn't work in any other way...

Buttered toast, bread & jam or jelly & ice-cream

Diggingdoris Wed 03-May-23 18:07:00

Tinned rice pud every time. So easy to swallow and very nourishing.

Bazza Wed 03-May-23 18:02:35

Another one for Heinz tomato soup but with a splash of Worcestershire sauce to counteract the sweetness. Eggs in any form.

Polly4t42 Wed 03-May-23 17:48:32

That’s mine also with hot buttered toast

queenofsaanich69 Wed 03-May-23 16:50:53

Eggs in a cup & I remember my Mum giving us Bovril with potatoes in & apparently my husband’s Mum did that too.

annodomini Wed 03-May-23 16:20:49

Bread and honey or, maybe even buttered toast with honey. Once, when I was down with a really vicious tropical tummy bug, I was advised by a local doctor who knew about these things not to eat fibre and avoid protein. So that time it was white bread and honey without butter.

Yes Blondiescot I also knew that I must be poorly if I got Lucozade! Heinz Cream of Tomato soup is my ultimate’poorly food’ too

I've been out of bed for 2 days after spending 5 in bed with nothing to eat, and the first thing I wanted was Heinz Tomato Soup. Best thing I've ever tasted, at least it felt like it at the time. Had some Heinz Chicken Soup yesterday, that was lovely but not so much as the tomato.

Bessieb Wed 03-May-23 15:28:28

Got to be dippy eggs and toast soldiers.

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 03-May-23 15:22:58

The idea of something really simple like a soft boiled egg, mashed potato and grated cheese sounds appealing to me if I'm a bit out of sorts but I must admit that if I'm feeling very poorly I don't feel like eating.
