Is my washing machine cleverer than I am?

Does your machine have buttons for 'Energy saving' and 'Eco-wash'? The beeping could well have been due to accidentally pressing one of these buttons on a programme that they are incompatible with.

My machine creates knots in my dressing gown belt!

My then new washing machine (3 years ago) was obviously not properly balanced in a spin of several towels and it made a racket and by the time I got to it, it was three quarters of its way out from under the working surface. It’s still there, I’ve tried to push it back but it won’t budge. Awkward critter.

I bought my current washing machine, after a drum malfunction in the previous one made holes in most of the washing in the machine at the time. I thought I had found all the damaged items, but I hadn't.

I had a very fine wide necked, 3/4 sleeved thermal vest that could provide invisible warmth, under the lightest of tops, which I thought was undamaged and knew was not replaceable.

As I took it out of the drawer and realised it too was damaged and was almost in tears, my new machine reached the end of its cycle and started to play a little tune, I recognised it immediately as one of my favourite classical music pieces, and immediately beganto laugh.

I am sure my WM knew I was really upset and timed itself to end the cycle just as I was in despair in order to play its little tune abd cheer me up.

Our machine is in the basement and sits on a pedestal about 8" high because otherwise the waste water outlet would be below the waste water pipes out on the street. Once I forget to do up a duvet cover before washing. All the wash load got into the duvet cover and when the machine started to spin, it got off kilter and we came down to find the washing machine on its face on the floor. Fortunately it was fine and could simply be lifted back up into position. Also fortunately the water and wastewater pipes were long enough, as was the electric cable. Luckily DS1 was here at the time and could help reinstate it.

I now double check that duvet covers are zipped/buttoned up.

Socks are collected in a net laundry bag and they go into the washing machine in the bag so I don't have odd socks disappearing. In winter when we have more socks to wash, I split them up into smaller bags to prevent the above happening - the machine might not come out of it so well a second time.

I don't use the eco programmes as they don't wash at the temperature given.

It really is a mystery how almost everything comes out tucked away in the duvet cover! How on earth does that happen?

My machine doesn't do any of those things except sock eating. It is 25 years old and has no computer bits. I pray it lasts me out as the new ones passeth my understanding!

Yammy, is your washing machine a Samsung because ours does exactly the same. Normally when I am in a hurry!

Yellowmellow - good advice about re-washing if you left a tissue in the load. Put in five soluble aspirin and wash again - somehow it gets rid of lots of the bits of tissue.

Singingnutty Wouldn't it be great if a washing machine detected tissues. Glad you were able to get the washing outside, hopefully a bit of a breeze to help blow the dreaded stuff off.

Everything in my kitchen is cleverer than I am. I think it all laughs and sniggers at me behind my back.

I always pair up my socks before washing them, using stainless steel nappy pins. I bought mine from Amazon. Saves loads of time trying to pair them when they are dry.

I put delicate undies in zip up net bags to keep them together. If there’s the slightest gap in the zip, my washing machine liberates the delicates and ties them round the other washing!

My machine has fourteen programmes some of which take three hours. I just use the shortest time and rarely the maximum temperature. Also by putting soda crystals in the detergent drawer use less detergent.0

Appliances are so “space-age” now I feel I’m going to set off into a moon orbit. Even the smallest of appliances come with buttons and knobs with manuals written in ten languages!

I’m afraid to buy a new washer/dryer. Try setting up a new smart TV with streaming infrastructure… Forget it! I give up!

My washing machine Child Locks without being dialled to . Unfortunately, I have lost the booklet that came with it. I often have to do another quick load to get it to open.

Years ago, we had an English Electric Liberator machine, with a sloping front, anyone remember those?
Anyway, it had a Solenoid switch when changing programme. I found out that it was my machine who was changing the radio station when the solenoid was actioned. Weird!

If you leave a tissue in a wash. 5 aspirin in the machine and a wash and the worst is gone. Saved me...or rather my clothes a few times

My new washer has a console like a jet fighter! My husband calls it Evil Edna.

My machine decides if clothing is rinsed enough, or washed enough - it's quite alarming. It will often show ten minutes left on the programme, and when I go back to hang the laundry out it is showing fifteen minutes as it has decided to give the load another rinse.

(Whirlpool has launched a new 'Ozone AirRefresh' technology designed to wash delicate clothes without any detergent or water.)

Apparently, in future, they won't use any water or cleaning chemicals - somehow, they'll just shake the dirt out of things!

My washing machine is so clever it needs a man to operate it, so OH does all the washing!
