If you had children /more children, what names would you use today?
We have a pussy cat called Freja , love that name but we didn't have enough children to use it. I also like many of the Celtic names like Lachlan.

We might have called our son Miles. I’m glad we didn’t as he is quite tall..

If we had boys they might have been Dan and Nate.

Neighbour, not known for being bright, called her latest Chardonnay. Poor thing ( a very attractive baby) got re named Newt by her eldest son… ……. After the expression pixxed as a Newt
Worse name I’ve seen was in Germany over 30 yrs ago, where grandparents announced his arrival by ending the newspaper announcement with “Unfortunately named KitchyKoo”

You do wonder at people,
I knew a couple who named their son and daughter Sam & Ella.

My daughter was nearly Roxanne (Police had the single out!) or Fiona, but I’m not fond of Fi, it reminds me of miniature poodles, so she ended up as neither. My son was a toss up between Connor and his actual name.

Our daughter was named after a popular foreign tennis player of the day, just before the name became really fashionable - there are loads of girls born around 1984 who have the name. I still love it but I actually prefer her more unusual middle name. If I were choosing now, she'd be called Dulcie, such a pretty name I think. Our son was another trailblazer with a name which was very unusual when we chose it but immensely popular since. We did have Liam and Lucas on the list but they were really to please DH, he was always going to be what he is called as far as I was concerned. I'd probably choose something far more unusual if I was choosing now - Atticus or Cameron perhaps. Our 2 grandsons have very unusual first names & family middle names. henetha , my sister is Elizabeth Jane but I doubt it was Thomas Hardy related! In the family, she's always been Jane but used Liz professionally which caused all sorts of mix ups!

Our oldest son has the name l have loved since l was a child and still do. Our second son was going to be a certain name but we found that the shortened version rhymed with our surname so it is his middle name. His first name turned out to be one of the two most popular boys' names that year and there were several others with the same name when he was at school. For our daughter we chose a name that was a little unusual without being outlandish. Had she been a he, he would have been called William or Oliver. If we had had a fourth child and the baby was a girl we would have called her Rosalind.

I wanted to call my daughter Myfanwy. Then a Welsh friend told me the English derivative so we decided not to bother

Had my firstborn been a girl, Emma Louise, then my brother used Emma for his eldest. If my next three had been girls they would have been Justine Lorelei or Kathryn Amber, but when we finally had a girl we gave her a different name entirely - much to her relief! I'd probably use the same names now.

I was careful to think before naming my children as my Aunt's neighbour called her daughter Hazel. Their surname was Nutt.

When I was pregnant the first time my husband wanted Sally for a girl or Spike for a boy! Everybody laughed at Spike so he changed it to Rory which I did like. But we called eldest son something different.

We had a child at school named SX. ( Essex) his parents said !!

My DD was named after the Latin word for a certain type of tree, the middle names are the title of a song and my name. We named our DS Alexander and the middle names were my husband's name and the main character of a Western. These were later changed by deed poll. Before the name change we always called him Alex and I still love that name like mad.

Naomi- anyone remember The Chalet School series???

Mirren Fri 19-May-23 18:04:44

I love the biblical names of Hebrew origin we gave our 1 boy and 3 girls.
I would give them exactly the same names again.
We had 3 children in 5 years and a 5 year gap before Naomi, our youngest arrived.
I always thought a second boy would have filled the 5 year gap beautifully. He even has a name ,Gabriel, shortened to Gabe.
He doesn't exist of course. He was never meant to be but it's a lovely idea.

If I had any daughters they would have been
Beverley Jayne
Scarlet Elizabeth
Only had sons

I knew someone who had 4 boys and desperately wanted a girl which she got and promptly called her Terri confused

tictacnana Fri 19-May-23 18:41:40

I always liked Lydia and , but for Kermit the Frog’s record of the same name , that’s what my eldest would have been called. I also liked Briony but my Mum was appalled and had already set her heart in Victoria ( long story). If I had gad a boy, he would have been David. My husband had decided on …. Walter Ernest Cecil ! Thank God the second one was also a girl !🤔

CanadianGran Fri 19-May-23 18:42:27

Our 3 have quite traditional names, that I never shortened to nicknames., but I do hear others call my sons by their shortened version.

I always did like Joelle, by DH thought it was a bit too French. I liked the soft-j sound, but I knew others would pronounce the hard j.

Also, we have a ton of Marie's (Mary, Marija) in our family trees, so I regret that I didn't use it as a middle name for DD instead of the ubiquitous Lynn as middle name. It was chosen because it flowed with her first name, and had no family ties at all, but it is boring (to me - no offence to any Lynn's!)

I also liked Glen, simple and masculine, but DH had an association with a bully from school, so it was nixed.

Through my whole pregnancy my DD was to be Dawn . My aunt was disappointed by my choice of a girls name as Dawn was the name she wanted for any future DD she may have .
The moment they handed my baby to me they asked her name and I said a completely smiledifferent name . Exactly 9 months later my aunt gave birth to Dawn !

CanadianGran Fri 19-May-23 19:21:06

Thisismyname1953, that is why I always say never to announce your name choices in advance of baby's arrival! Too bad.

NotSpaghetti Fri 19-May-23 19:23:21

tictacnana, Walter Ernest Cecil would probably been quite trendy these days! grin

JudyBloom Fri 19-May-23 19:39:20

Today I would definitely choose shorter names for my children, but would still use very feminine names and very masculine names, I wouldn't go in for gender-free names.

Aldom Fri 19-May-23 19:45:44

As a young girl I read and enjoyed the Whiteoak Chronicles. Two of the main characters were called Renny and Pheasant. I used to think I would call my future children by these names. My children were very relived that by the time they were born I'd moved on. grin

Saggi Fri 19-May-23 19:47:25

My daughter disliked her name so much she changed it by ‘deed poll’…… my son loves his!….. kids eh! One outa two isn’t bad!

Thisismyname1953 Fri 19-May-23 20:18:06

@Canadian gran. I didn’t mind my aunt making use of Dawn for her daughter, I had gone right off it 😆. My cousin Dawn will be 50 next year and I much prefer The name I gave to DD and she is also glad that she has the name she ended up with x x
