To live with a teenage girl in the house 😫 it must be 35yrs since I did.
My 18yr old GD is staying while Mums on holiday and my bathroom is a mess, makeup and hair stuff all over the window sill, never mind the razor and hair all over the shower, walls and sink. Shes now painting her nails and borrowing my hair dryer and brush. Oh please give me back my clean tidy quiet house. I love her to bits but I'll be glad when the weeks up.

A friends daughter was very untidy when she lived at home . After she got married here house was spotless. When challenged about this her reply was " Well this is different this is my house " .

Oh yes, I remember when we stayed with DD at her first flat and left a few things around.

😲 "What a mess" she said as she came home and we said "we're just getting our own back" 😁

Mine changed her ways when working onboard ship.
Space at a premium.

I stayed at home the summer I turned 18, my parents went on holiday with my younger brother and sister.

I was looking forward to having the house to myself; however, my Grandma fell out with one of her neighbours and ended up having to come and stay with me!

I'm afraid I carried on as planned, and took her "for a walk" ie to the pub with me.
Once she got over that shock (she was teetotal) she sat at a table chatting with some sailors on leave and had a whale of a time 🤣

When my parents came home they were flabbergasted 😂

A few miserable responses here - I'm sure tanith meant this as a light-hearted thread!

Crikey, lighten up everyone. My grandchildren can make as much mess as they like so long as they come to stay.

I taught my children about tidiness, I want to enjoy the company of my grandchildren not become their parents.

Sorry Tanith, I’m not insinuating that your gd is a ‘bit of a handful with some rather dodgy mates’ too! grin

Yes. I did wonder why she had come to stay at 18.

I had to stay with my Nan too when I was 18 and my parents went away.
But I was a bit of a handful and some rather dodgy mates

Tanith I think that it’s lovely that you are enjoying some time together smile

tanith Thu 18-May-23 16:12:36

She came to stay mainly because shes gone out, locked up but left windows open a couple of times and Mum was nervous in case she did it again. Besides that she enjoys time at my house we watch old movies together when she’s not working.

If she id that untudy of course you must say something but I think its rather nice she wants to stay with you.

Aveline Thu 18-May-23 16:03:28

Obviously, I was very lucky with my DD. She is very neat and tidy in fact my house is an affront to her (although I've never left clothes around or left a mess in the bathroom)

Doodledog Thu 18-May-23 15:52:43

Mine used to drive me mad with hair dye on the towels and mess everywhere, but I missed her so much when she left, and I still do. I'm sure I'd be back to madness within a week if she moved back though grin

NotSpaghetti Thu 18-May-23 15:49:23

Yes. I did wonder why she had come to stay at 18.

Theexwife Thu 18-May-23 15:42:47

Maybe that is why she wasn’t left home alone whilst her parents were away.

Grammaretto Thu 18-May-23 15:01:06

I agree she shouldn't be so messy.
I host youngsters from around the world and am usually very impressed with the way they leave the communal areas and strip their beds when they leave.

Things I have told them not to do such as using the tumble drier on a sunny day.

When she’s got her own home you can visit and make an unholy mess there, Tanith. grin

Yes, it's great to see their reactions SueDonim 😲 😁

Why oh why was my DD the last one to leave her student house? We went to pick her up and spent the day helping her clear up everyone else's mess as well as hers.

My teenage DDs used to have a massive tidy up once every so often, the rest of the time I shut their bedroom doors.

Obviously none of you have ever been in a student flat with eight occupants at the end of a term!

😂😂 Spot on, notagran!

Absolutely. As norah said select your battles carefully.

tanith Thu 18-May-23 14:42:24

Oh don’t worry she will clear up after herself, I just happened to need the bathroom before she was finished and I’m used to nothing being out of place in my bathroom😂

SueDonim Thu 18-May-23 14:40:34

Norah Thu 18-May-23 14:39:48

Germanshepherdsmum

Surely her Mum doesn’t let her get away with this and clean up after her?

Perhaps you don't have 4 daughters? grin

I didn't let anyone "get away" with messiness. I closed their doors. I select my battles carefully, as evidenced by this wedding prep.

Riverwalk Thu 18-May-23 14:36:50

I had sons - from what I can see from my teenage GS & GD they are as bad as each other!

tanith I'm sure the week will fly by and you'll be sad when she goes grin

Baggs Thu 18-May-23 14:34:00

Though, to be fair, sharing with other messy and/or difficult late teenagers does bring home the things their parents and grandparents have tried to teach them about the value of tidiness and order in a shared house.
