Gransnet favourite Victoria would have been 70 today

Sparklefizz Tue 23-May-23 09:46:00

No worries, Fanny - I'll check out You Tube first of all.
Thanks for your help.

FannyCornforth Tue 23-May-23 09:42:10

I can’t get it to work, sorry!

FannyCornforth Tue 23-May-23 09:41:14

I don’t know what happened there, I’ll try again

FannyCornforth Tue 23-May-23 09:40:27

Sparklefizz it seems that’s it’s only available on You Tube.
Here is a link to buy the DVD, but there’s only one available!

Check this out!

Does anyone know where I can find another film starring Victoria Wood called "Eric and Ernie" about Morecambe & Wise?

Sparklefizz Tue 23-May-23 07:53:51

People think highly of Nicola Walker as an actress, but she's not a patch on Victoria Wood in my view.

FannyCornforth Tue 23-May-23 07:03:50

MayBee I’m exactly the same.
I adored dinnerladies and the whole ensemble cast (especially Julie W as Bren’s mum) but I just cannot watch it

I can probably watch Housewife 49 again (it was wonderful) butI avoid her comedies. Not that I don’t love them but it still upsets me that she died so young. She had so much more to give.

Sparklefizz Mon 22-May-23 18:59:05

I re-watched Housewife 49 yesterday and it had me in tears. She was such a terrific actress.

Such a great loss. She was so very talented and we were in stitches watching her. Saw her live show in Brighton, also caught her shopping in Selfridges, and she gave us a warm smile when she knew we’d recognised her. Much too young. 😔

I loved watching this lady. Who can ever forget beat me on the bottom with a woman’s weekly.

Thanks FannyC

FannyCornforth Sat 20-May-23 08:29:20

Callistemon Housewife, 49 is available on Brit Box

Callistemon21 Fri 19-May-23 22:47:18

Such a talent, gone far too soon and so sadly missed. Victoria would have had much more in store for us, I think.

I will try to catch up with Nella Last on ITVX, thanks NanaDana. Is Housewife 49 on any channel?

I introduced DD2 to Barry and Freda last year, she hadn't heard of them before 😂😂

I loved everything she did - 'dinnerladies' was a masterclass in comedy writing. I too had tears when I heard she had died - and seemingly she had gone for treatment and had kept most of the trials of her illness to herself. I read her biography, and her childhood was perhaps unusual, and quite lonely.

Chardy Fri 19-May-23 22:13:16

This story always makes me smile
'Dinnerladiesalso featured British TV icons Dora Bryan, Eric Sykes and Thora Hird in one episode, as parents of the characters in the “bring your parents to work” episode.Eric Sykes reportedly asked Victoria if she wanted the role “to be played Northern”. “Um yeah of course,” she said. “Oh I can’t remember how to do a Northern accent” he replied. To which Victoria replied, “Eric, you’re fromOldham!” '

Well worth a look

I was just reading something said by Kate Robbins - that one of the episodes they had to film certain scenes several times because the audience were laughing so much! She said they had to calm the audience down!

Thanks FannyC for the reminder. I saw her twice - weep making hilarity. That gentle but occasionally cutting northern humour. A much missed genius

grannydarkhair Fri 19-May-23 18:29:57

Anytime I hear her name, I instantly think of The Ballad of Freda and Barry and start to laugh. Comic genius. I can’t think of anything she wrote/starred in that I didn’t like. Dinner Ladies is probably my favourite work of everything she did.

Such warm gentle humour ( with a bit of wicked thrown in) - much missed. A lot of modern humour seems a little cruel.

Anniebach Fri 19-May-23 09:49:35

Yes ‘Housewife 49’

NanaDana Fri 19-May-23 09:43:09

You can catch up with Nella Last on ITV X.

Dickens

"Nella Last, Housewife 49"

She was absolutely wonderful as 'Housewife 49".

I feel like watching it again.

Me too. Where can I find it?

She was such a marvellous talent and sadly missed.

Smashing poem NanaDana
She died in that dreadful year, 2016, when we lost so many special people.
I remember I cried when I heard the sad news

Thank you, F.C. Yes, I'd forgotten that 2016 was such a bad year for celebrity deaths. Just had a quick look. David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, Terry Wogan, Ronnie Corbett, Alan Rickman to name but a few. I was also in tears when I heard about Victoria's death. So unexpected, and taken far too soon.
