A great loss to the world of comedy. I really miss her TV shows, and she was lovely when we saw her live shows. 😢

A great talent we lost far too soon.

I was at work when someone said she’d died. I actually had tears in my eyes and was truly upset when I heard about it. Bless her she was so funny seen her live a couple of times.

pascal30 Fri 19-May-23 08:43:37

We saw her in Bristol and one of my friends was told off by another audience member for laughing too much!!

My tribute, from a massive fan:
Remembering Victoria
So many well-known people, have gone in recent years,
We’ve felt sad for their families, and may have shed some tears.
We all have our own favourites but there’s one stands out for me,
Victoria Wood, so talented, a true celebrity.
Comedian and actor, song-writer and musician,
A gifted, unique author, with words a true magician.
She started on a talent show, sat at a lone joanna,
And sang her own songs about life, in such endearing manner.
The big break came in ’76, the “That’s Life” TV show,
Her “novelty” performance made her reputation grow.
And then with Julie Walters, continued on TV,
In their own show where we first saw her gift for comedy.
Success was not immediate, her progress was quite slow,
But someone saw her genius, and gave her her own show.
Her writing skills came to the fore, exploded on the screen,
And gave us priceless sketches like we’d never ever seen.
Acorn Antiques was brilliant, it had us all in fits,
As characters all fluffed their lines, and scenery fell to bits.
Her TV show continued, and I never will forget,
“Two soups” with Julie Walters, and I think it’s safe to bet,
Whenever there’s a menu and it says : “Soup of the day”,
You’ll remember that old waitress as she staggers on her way.
An’ then came Dinner Ladies, a script sharp as a knife,
She captured the true comedy that lies in daily life.
In later years her work involved a more dramatic cast,
As “Housewife, 49” she played the part of Nella Last.
Based on pre and post war diaries, it added to her fame,
A brilliant performance, two BAFTA’s to her name.
Her musical, “That Day we Sang”, moved her career along,
She had an endless talent in which she could do no wrong.
Despite her fame she stayed the same, though Papparazzi hounded,
A Northern lass with so much class, her feet were firmly grounded.
So bless you dear Victoria, you were only sixty two,
No age at all to get the call to go to pastures new.
Though bittersweet, you’ll get to meet and joke with the Almighty,
And where you’re going there’s no need for any flameproof nightie.
As you enter through those Pearly Gates, you won’t be going meekly,
You’ll have St. Peter chuckling as you wave your Woman’s Weekly.
You left us with such dignity, a private battle fought,
And shared with family and friends, no public knowledge sought.
We’ve such a precious legacy, to help us at the end,
And although I never met you, I feel I’ve lost a friend…

I watched most of it and ended up going to bed very late. Pat and Margaret is such a good play with the fabulous Thora Hird who uttered the outraged words “not on the eiderdown”.

I thought it was tonight, and couldn’t find it!
It will be on catch up though

Smashing poem NanaDana
She died in that dreadful year, 2016, when we lost so many special people.
I remember I cried when I heard the sad news

Redhead56 Fri 19-May-23 08:56:39

I was watching a re run of celebrity bake off in 2015 only the other day. I was sad as when she was on the programme she knew she had cancer but kept it secret. I think she died about a year later such a talent and she died far too young.

Thank you, F.C. Yes, I'd forgotten that 2016 was such a bad year for celebrity deaths. Just had a quick look. David Bowie, Muhammad Ali, Terry Wogan, Ronnie Corbett, Alan Rickman to name but a few. I was also in tears when I heard about Victoria's death. So unexpected, and taken far too soon.

"Nella Last, Housewife 49"

She was absolutely wonderful as 'Housewife 49".

I feel like watching it again.

Me too. Where can I find it?

She was such a marvellous talent and sadly missed.

You can catch up with Nella Last on ITV X.

Anniebach Fri 19-May-23 09:49:35

Yes ‘Housewife 49’

Chocolatelovinggran Fri 19-May-23 17:43:29

Such warm gentle humour ( with a bit of wicked thrown in) - much missed. A lot of modern humour seems a little cruel.

grannydarkhair Fri 19-May-23 18:29:57

Anytime I hear her name, I instantly think of The Ballad of Freda and Barry and start to laugh. Comic genius. I can’t think of anything she wrote/starred in that I didn’t like. Dinner Ladies is probably my favourite work of everything she did.

Iam64 Fri 19-May-23 18:56:21

Thanks FannyC for the reminder. I saw her twice - weep making hilarity. That gentle but occasionally cutting northern humour. A much missed genius

Chardy Fri 19-May-23 21:58:05

I was just reading something said by Kate Robbins - that one of the episodes they had to film certain scenes several times because the audience were laughing so much! She said they had to calm the audience down!

Chardy Fri 19-May-23 22:13:16

This story always makes me smile
'Dinnerladiesalso featured British TV icons Dora Bryan, Eric Sykes and Thora Hird in one episode, as parents of the characters in the “bring your parents to work” episode.Eric Sykes reportedly asked Victoria if she wanted the role “to be played Northern”. “Um yeah of course,” she said. “Oh I can’t remember how to do a Northern accent” he replied. To which Victoria replied, “Eric, you’re fromOldham!” '

Well worth a look

MrsNemo Fri 19-May-23 22:26:57

I loved everything she did - 'dinnerladies' was a masterclass in comedy writing. I too had tears when I heard she had died - and seemingly she had gone for treatment and had kept most of the trials of her illness to herself. I read her biography, and her childhood was perhaps unusual, and quite lonely.

Callistemon21 Fri 19-May-23 22:47:18

Such a talent, gone far too soon and so sadly missed. Victoria would have had much more in store for us, I think.

I will try to catch up with Nella Last on ITVX, thanks NanaDana. Is Housewife 49 on any channel?

I introduced DD2 to Barry and Freda last year, she hadn't heard of them before 😂😂
