When was the last time that you truly felt excited by something? I was thinking this yesterday and though I am pleased about certain things I don’t get excited about anything, is it an age thing? The last time I felt truly excited was in 2004!! we were very fortunate to be on the maiden voyage of Queen Mary 2 and I looked forward to it for ages. We had already had our first grandchild, that too was exciting, we have had four more since, though I was pleased but not exactly excited. Love to hear your thoughts.

When I was accepted to do a Masters degree at Oxford as a mature student.

Any contact with wild animals thrills me
Me too MayBee70. I recently saw a weasel run across the road in front of us but hope he doesn’t do it too often as it’s a busy road.

Hildagard, I have wondered the same thing. Excitement I think is all about anticipation, will I like it, what will happen. When you get older you pretty.much know already.

Last year when we'd booked a holiday to Dorset/Hampshire borders. I was excited to climb the hill to Corfe Castle as the last time I was in the area I was havily pregnant and couldn't manage it. " weeks before we were due to go I fell and broke my hip so although I still managed to go on holiday I still couldn''t get up to the castle. I wonder if I'll ever get there......

General Election in 1997 when Blair won! Walking around Oxford at lunchtime there was a real buzz of excitement.

I was so excited last July when my son and his family came over from Tokyo where they work. I hadn’t seen them for three years mainly due to Covid. I did see them on FaceTime but not the same as in person.

I won tickets to see Gary Barlow on a cruise in March and I was excited w hen I was handed the tickets. And yes, the concert (although brief compared to an arena concert) did live up to expectations and we were only a few rows from the stage.

We've been to Venice twice and stayed at a mobile home site called Ca Savio where with a five minute drive to Punta Sabioni we could get a regular boat over to Venice, sometimes in the morning with daily commuters. It was magical approaching by sea, there's always a thrill of seeing the wonderful city from the lagoon. Lovely memories.

Seeing my gc born (I've been very lucky to be asked to all of the births) was very exciting.
I get excited by new growth and odd flowers on my house plants.
But I'm very limited in terms of experiences atm so maybe I'd be excited about other stuff if only I could get out there and do it 🤔 🤣

I get excited all the time being optimistic, the sight of the postman, is he bringing me something exciting? The couriers, what did I order this time, waking up and nothing aches means a full day of something ahead. excitement and gratitude fill my life

I thought about how I don't get excited anymore a few years ago and thought it was just me having become a miserable old woman. I do get pleasure from things but not the excitement before holidays or whatever that I used to feel. Glad to know it's not just me, perhaps it is an age thing.

Very excited watching dolphins playing off the coast at Warkworth beach on my birthday!
It is the simple things !

silverlining Oh yes Venice by night. People dancing in St Marks Square, the little orchestras taking it in turns to strike up. Magical.

I’ve got a hedgehog that visits my front garden at night. Last night I went outside to put the milk bottles out and there he was. He doesn’t seem very keen on the hedgehog food I’ve been putting out but I make sure there’s fresh water for him. And I’ve put a hedgehog house under some shrubs so it’s well protected. But the most exciting thing that happened to me last year when I was by the sea was to see two otters cross the road late at night. I was buzzing for ages afterwards and have been boring people with it ever since. I wasn’t 100% sure that they were otters so I posted on an otter Facebook page, only giving a very vague location ( some people don't like otters) and someone told me immediately exactly where I was because that’s where he sees them. To be honest 8 or so months later it still lifts my spirits when I think about it. The only downside is that I now worry about them being hit by a car: people speed terribly on that stretch of road. Any contact with wild animals thrills me, especially seeing dolphins. Which reminds me that I must get some better binoculars.

Two days ago, when I found two frogs had made their home in my new pond. I sat and watched them for ages. And this morning when I found a baby grasshopper, a teeny weeny thing, on a leaf on my patio.

Hetty58 Sailing on a calm sea sounds wonderful. Just what I thought retirement would be like. In reality is anything but !

I don't think I've ever been excited about anything not even as a child. As a mother of young children, holidays were never anything to be pleased about. It meant doing all the same chores as at home only under more difficult conditions (We always camped)

I would love to go back too MayBee. Perhaps we will (you too).

I still use the plastic camping plate that we used to take with us! There were two but one of them disintegrated! I had the best ice cream I’ve ever had in Venice. One thing that does worry me is that they always sprayed the camp site with some sort of insect repellent every evening and it smelt very toxic. Mind you, the mozzies in that area were beyond anything. We took the kids on a grand tour when they were in their teens and our daughter got bitten ( they do seem to prefer some people to others). For some reason, when I have a mozzie bite it seems to release endorphins in my body because it makes me think back to those holidays!

I feel excitement every time I’m arriving at my daughter’s house or when they arrive to visit me, as I just love seeing my grandchildren. It’s not the same level of excitement as I felt at the times of their births, but it’s excitement all the same. I also get excited about going on holiday (though that is always tinged with a touch of anxiety too).

I am having a new front door soon. I would be excited if it wasn’t for the fact that I’m convinced that something will go horribly wrong and I’m going to have to have lots of plastering etc done afterwards. But I’ve wanted a new front door for decades. Could never decide on the style of door that I wanted but really happy with what I’ve chosen.

Belated Happy birthday to you Hildegarde. flowers

Hildagard Tue 06-Jun-23 07:52:50

Thank you for all your interesting replies.
I’ve just had a milestone birthday, no major celebrations, by choice.
I’m now off to reactivate my excitement button!😀

In the mid 60 s while on holiday at lido de jesolo I caught a boat to Venice.
I was enchanted with it all and it was the first of repeat visits since, The best one was when we stayed in a small hotel for a few nights rather than just day trips. Venice’s by night when the tourists have left is wonderfully atmospheric.
It’s still a great favourite and I like to think if I were to visit again I would be excited.
