When I was little, my favourite character was Rupert Bear because he always had so many magical adventures. Who was your favourite character and why?

I loved reading Heidi and the imagery it brought to my mind. The warm milk fresh from the goats, the fresh bread. Life seemed idyllic.

Mary mungo & midge 😊

Topsy from the Topsy and Tim books. She had a mummy that walked her to school and arranged parties and took her to lots of places. A nice middle class upbringing! I quite liked the idea of being a twin too.

There was a fairly short-lived cartoon series, Johnny Quest. I think I was in love with JQ.

We moved from Manchester to rural Knutsford when I was 10. I was convinced I would meet Rupert and his friends there. A very naive 10 year old!

Oh yes! I wanted to be Samantha too. Always trying to wriggle my nose like her lol

Daryl from Mallory Towers or the twins from St Clairs. How I wished I could go to boarding school.

Noddy was my first love. We had a few Noddy books which I adored. When I could read I read all my brothers Just William books. I then devoured Enid Bytons Malory Towers series and those girls were my heroines.

I just asked DH he said Davy Crocket, he can't sing but has just sung that song. I remember I had the book too and we used to pretend the front gate was the Alamo and jump out at children further up the street.

Yes indeed. My favourite character was anyone who went to boarding school. I did get to teach in one briefly at the end of my career and it confirmed my opinions. The students had a lovely time especially at weekends.

Gosh what a lot if lovely memories of forgotten books and characters. The Lorna Hill ballet books and Monica Edwards stories were such favourites with me . I adored Jennings and his pal Darbyshire from the delightful books by Anthony Buckley if I remember correctly.

The wicked Queen in Disney’s Snowhite. Although she was scary, she was so beautiful and striking.

I longed to be a pupil at Mallory Towers, oh, the adventures they had.

As a toddler I was obsessed with Yogi Bear. So much so that on holiday in Margate I would scream if I wasn't taken to visit a statue of him which was outside a shop, I was 2, I knew exactly where that shop was (at the top of a flight of stairs). First indication of Autism?
Later on it was Dr Dolittle

Lorna the ballet dancer in a series in the Bunty comic.

Does anyone remember Pookie the adorable fluffy white rabbit books by Ivy Wallace? The first was written in 1945. I still have and treasure a copy of Pookie believes in Santa Claus given to me in 1956 when I was 6.

Paddington I suppose. I loved him and the silly scrapes he got into.

Someone mentioned The Swish of the Curtain. I loved that book and the sequels. Pamela Brown was only 15 when she wrote it.

I loved the Twins at St Claire’s by Enid Blyton. Loved the tales of boarding school. Written in the 1940s and I read them in the 1960s but didn’t feel old fashioned to me

Not a character but Hayley Mills and the characters she played in all her films such as The Parent Trap. I SO wanted to be her.

Oh yes. Pollyanna! I’ve got a solar powered rainbow maker in my kitchen as I always loved the scene in Pollyanna with the chandelier.

Molly Molly Mandy. And the Naughtiest Girl
In the School (name escapes me… Elizabeth?)

Milly also had her friend" Little Friend Susan.".
I once had a colleague in fits of laughter for a day. Our bossy head turned up with a new haircut, thinking she was the bee's knees. My friend whispered "What the hell", and I whispered back" Little friend Susan."
One of the favourites I found teaching Infants was My Naughty little sister by Dorothy Edwards with Illustrations by Shirley Hughes. I kept quite a few generations quiet and my GC loved them too.

Years ago , I thought that it was nice to watch Heidi with my small daughters .

One afternoon , I had some baking to do and left them watching the TV .

Lingering in the doorway thinking how sweet they were - I heard the older one say ,
" Not bloody boring Heidi again . "

To which , her two year old sister ( who rarely spoke ) replied ,
" Ruddy Heidi ,"
furiously sucking her thumb and hugging her teddy .
