Are they trying to tell me something?

Buying, either on line or in person, seems so much more complicated nowadays.

In shops, I quite often have to put my card in the machine rather than just tapping. And, I also have to put a verification code in when buying on line which i never did previously - mostly my JL card on line.

Or is the bank trying to tell me not to spend so much?

Saggi Are your cards registered with your regular shopping outlets. If so, you will not require verification numbers.

Since the beginning of this year, if you shop on line and use a credit card, as part of the card paying process they send a text to your mobile phone (or a card reader they supply, if you do not use a mobile phone) with a six figure code. You then type the number into the box on line, and the purchase should go through.

I have had problems with this because we were early internet users and, in the late 1990s/2000 had no mobile reception at home so when sites asked for a phone number, the number we registered with these companies was our land line and while it has been easy to update some of these sites, some, like ebay have been a pain in the proverbial, and, as I said above, I actually ended up having to open a new account.

Sorry …what the heck is a verification code and why haven’t I been asked to use one …🤷🏻‍♀️….I shop on line all the time!

In my experience it has been Mastercard that have asked for codes.

Ditto!

Perhaps it varies from bank to bank, I use Virgin for the majority of my online purchases and occasionally TSB or M & S and they have the message just below were you type in the authorisation code.

It is not on the text/email that gives you the code.

Although it can be aggravating at times, on balance I prefer there to be proper security checks.

For me it isnt much about the trust.
And I wouldnt ask them to buy something from sites I didnt recognise that are widely used.
It is normally just ebay. Occasional m&s.

I personally do not like the faff. And the others who help me, think of it all as second nature

I have a couple of friends who say they don't trust paying for anything online. Then ask me to buy tickets and sort problems out on my phone! It can be quite annoying.

Being housebound and having to do all my shopping on line I have problems because I don’t have a mobile phone. (I am not mobile so have no use for one)
Also I am also rather slow on my iPad because of of age (100) Recently I was asked for a verification code and in the end had telephone my bank (First Direct telephone bank). They have now sent me a card reader. When asked for a verification code I just put my card in and enter my pin.
All these new rules are to prevent fraud. When buying a new bed recently my bank telephoned my to verify it was me to make sure it was me because it was a larger than normal sum Then I had an email purporting to be from First Direct which I ignored because I knew that they never communicate with me in that manner. The same with any phone calls the number which I don’t recognise.
I often wonder how other elderly people manage.

I have always embraced new technology and was a tutor for for the LA education dept., as well as teaching IT in school.
Technology has made managing my problematic life, due to health issues, so much easier and less stressful.

The latest bonus, is that I am about to start different immunotherapy medication with a new supplier. Previously, I had to wait in all day from 8am until 6pm, awaiting its delivery and spend hours on the phone, when there was a problem.
Now I have an online account, where I can do most things, without having speak to anyone. What's not to like?
Recently we managed to sort our Scottish Gas issues and get our smart meter removed, without actually lifting the phone.

I think verification codes are an essential these days, when scams are prevalent.

I worry a lot about getting old and relying on others to do everything digitally for me. I want to keep my independence as long as possible and don’t necessarily want AC or others knowing my personal stuff. So I spend a lot of time trying to keep up with changes. I’m 69 and my husband is 70 but he struggles even with emails and I often have to bail him out. I use YouTube a lot to learn new things. At the moment I’m trying to get comfortable with QR codes which I think is the next IT challenge. It’s already popping up all over the place. Even had to use it for parking at a train station recently. Use it or lose it they say but in this case I think many of us are losing it!

Where is my list gg?

It always seems to happen to me at the butcher's!!

When your bank sends you the verification code underneath it should say do you want this supplier to be added to your favourites /preferential list and a little box to click.

This isn't on my code text!

I used to have the same aggravation with my JL card, even with Ocado though I shop there every week.

However you can arrange that they don't request a verification code every time with some online shops, including Ocado. They offered this service to me so I'm not sure how to find it on their site.

It's a Mastercard, the same as my NatWest card and I have the same problem with them.

Here in Denmark, if you have a Visa or master card issued by a Danish bank, you only need to use your PIN in a shop if you are paying for something over a certain amount, This is to prevent large sums being withdrawn on stolen cards.

Usually you just have to swipe your card but sometimes you have to insert it.

Using a Danish issued card in Germany you always have to insert it in the machine at the cash desk, and as far as I can see the same applies if someone is paying in Denmark with a card issued by a German bank.

For all online transactions here you need to verify that you are the card-holder. You chose which of two or three methods of doing this you want to use, once for all. I have a computer generated once only code sent to my phone, type it in, and follow it with a code I and nets.dk know, as I find this easier than logging on using my personal security code to the government portal used by hospitals, Income tax and any other state or government dept. that might want to contact me.

All of these measures are meant to reduce the likelihood of misuse of our credit cards. Whether they do or not remains to be seen.

I think the days are long gone when a bank manager knew each and very customer and felt entitled to offer unsolicited advice about our expenditure, so no, OP, I don't think the bank is trying to tell you anything.

I often have to verify very small amounts - regular parking for instance. Car parking at the station that I use once a week - drives me mad! ( it quadruples the time needed to buy the parking) I wouldn't mind if it was an unusual purchase - but I use the same car park the same day of the week at a similar time, every week ( for years). I would pay the parking space in advance but the system is often not working smoothly before I leave home. Grr! Surely the software should recognise that its a regular purchase for the regular car on the regular day- so it is unlikely to be fraud!

I can shop anywhere and the my card will be accepted using tapping... but every single time I go to Morrisons it rejects my card and I have to put the pin number in... I've stopped shopping there now because of that..

SusieB50 Mon 19-Jun-23 13:59:20

My son has also put facial recognition on my phone , often I have problems it tells me to “bring the phone nearer to my face, get into a better light ,blink again” 😡. I don’t know how to get rid of it now!

biglouis Mon 19-Jun-23 13:31:46

I buy almost everything online so I am very familiar with verification codes. Sometimes the requirement does not make sense. I pay a thousand dollars for something I bought in the USA and it goes straight through. But the same day a code will be required for a £50 routine shop at Tesco. Go figure.

Debbi58 Mon 19-Jun-23 13:24:45

It happens to me all the time, I can use contact less sometimes but not others. Also did a verification code to shop online . I'm with barclays and have 3 new cards in the last 2 years . Because my card details have been hacked and used fraudulent. Always me , never my hubbie

i seldom carry cash as i don't use a purse, i have a bag with about £15 pound coins, i was doing a shop in morrisons and went to swipe my card but it was not working, the young girl said she was sorry but they were having a problem with all the tills but kindly said she would keep my shopping while i went to the cash machine outside, problem was i could not remember my pin number, i had to explain it was the same number, several other people had to leave there shopping. my son never has cash or his card, he just swipes his phone, he wanted to set up my new phone that he got me but i said no thanks, it was bad enough that he set up photo recognition (i feel stupid having to put the phone up to see my face.) maybe i am just not cut out for all this tech.

It is all a faff but necessary to protect against fraud which is all too common.

I’m feeling annoyed think I need advice please. My son’s in-laws live in France. First indication is that we’re undermined and second rate compared to wife’s family with plans in place to spend every baby milestone with their family. Already first Father’s Day was celebrated in France. We’re kind and very generous and supportive but there’s a strong leaning towards her own.

You need to start a new thread, NewNana and put your problem in the title.
I fear you won't get many responses on this thread about credit cards.
People will give lots of good advice, but just not here.

Doodledog Sun 18-Jun-23 23:25:26

I think you should start a new thread, NewNana2. This one is about banking grin.

If you click on Forums, then Ask A Gran, then Start a New Thread you will be able to ask advice on a thread of your own.

I find that if I am on holiday, I am often asked to use my pin no, rather than contact less.
I'm all for anything that helps prevent fraud.

Years ago someone tried to purchase porn videos in New York, with our account.
American Express spotted the fraud immediately, because my card was usually spent in Boden, White Stuff etc. 😉
