My grandmother used to go for a nap for an hour and it was exactly an hour later when she came downstairs. She could also judge how much water the kettle and tea pot needed for however many cups of tea she needed to make. She was a great judge of time and weights and measures.

Husband's grandma was a busy farmer's wife and went up to her bedroom every afternoon for "a rest". Everyone in the family knew she must not be disturbed.
(I did wonder if Grandad ever joined her - they had 6 children!)

I think in the NE coal mining/factories were the main employers and it was traditional for most of the menfolk to go to the workingmans club for several pints of beer before Sunday lunch. As a result, many rolled or staggered home, sat down to a gargantuan lunch that they hadn’t helped prepare, then go to bed to sleep it off - often all afternoon, leaving their wives and daughters to deal with the mess. Both my Grandad and Uncle did this, while my DF always did the washing up, after he’d made my DM and me coffee. My Aunt and Grand would join us after they’d got their own washing up etc done and my DF would make their coffee too. I don’t think their husbands lifted a finger - ever.
A different life in the 50/60s.

I go to bed around 2am, get up around 10am, never nap. People who go to bed early and get up early have a self riteous attitude even though they nap for 2 hours in the afternoon.

Curlywhirly Tue 20-Jun-23 13:11:58

Well my DH must have a brain to rival Einstein! Since he was 11 years old he has had a nap (either before or after his evening meal). He can nap for up to 2 hours and still sleep all night. 🙄

This explains a lot! I don't nap unless I actual lie on the bed. I don't do that as I just sleep and don't wake up for hours. I very rarely drop off while watching TV.

Same here, and when I do finally wake up I feel quite physically sick and really down in the dumps.

If I feel the need for a nap (which doesn't happen often) I set the alarm for an hour. If I sleep for longer I wake up very disorientated.
My husband has been an early to bed, early to rise person for many years and now we've retired I've adapted my hours to be slightly nearer to his. I don't sleep well unless it's dark in my bedroom and find that I wake early now, mainly because my bedroom is not fully light-proofed.
I'm not able to doze in a chair.

Damdee Tue 20-Jun-23 13:04:42

If I nap during the day I can't sleep at night.

Bella23 Tue 20-Jun-23 12:23:44

I nap now I have the perfect excuse I always blamed the family habits.

Diplomat Tue 20-Jun-23 11:57:03

I have to be very ill to sleep during the day. Carpe diem.

Misty007 Tue 20-Jun-23 11:56:00

Thats great does it effect your evening sleep at all. My hubby has thyroid problem and im always jealous how as soon as his heads hits the pillow his straight off.

Juicylucy Tue 20-Jun-23 11:48:13

Gosh I never nap during the day and hope I don’t start anytime soon. I must be a dunce 🤣.

Oldnproud Tue 20-Jun-23 11:35:48

I've never been a napper, As an adult, I've never been able to fall asleep daytime even when I've tried tried, except when ill. Until recently, that is - only 62, but have discovered audio books (eye problems make actual reading, unpleasant and difficult) and I have nodded off to sleep quite a few times recently while listening to those!

I’m not a daytime napper either, unless I’m ill. My DM always felt it a lazy habit, I’m sure a bit of that has stayed with me.
My DH could nap for England, as can his sister. Sit them down and they’d both be asleep in minutes.

As I recall, it was so often seen as a lazy foreign habit, practised only by lazy foreigners! There was something morally wrong with Brits doing it - though having said that, one of Barbara Pym’s novels (written and set pre WW2) mentions more than once obnoxious old Miss Dogget’s daily afternoon ‘rest’. But it’s never called a ‘sleep’ or a ‘nap’.

Downbutnotout Tue 20-Jun-23 11:19:47

Good news about napping, I regularly nap. Can't keep my eyes open, but still sleep well at night.

henetha Tue 20-Jun-23 09:51:14

I love having an afternoon nap. It make me feel better for the rest of the day. And I still sleep well at night.

I'd say I sleep better for my naps. I do remember sleep experts saying this too. Don't know why though. I never take a good night's sleep for granted after my various ops.

tanith Tue 20-Jun-23 09:12:40

Very rarely do I nap in the daytime, I do wake early and could probably do with it but I just can’t fall asleep in the day.

Witzend Tue 20-Jun-23 08:47:49

PS, I usually set my phone timer to limit it to less than an hour, otherwise I could easily go into a long, deep sleep, which I def. don’t want in the afternoon.

Witzend Tue 20-Jun-23 08:46:08

I’ve just read this, too.

I always have what they call ‘disturbed nights’ so an afternoon zizz on the sofa is a regular thing here.

Before anyone might mention it, if I don't have one, it makes absolutely no difference to how I sleep at night - that’s just an age thing. I often look back nostalgically to the days when I would just go to bed and sleep - all night.

I can sit down and almost be falling on my face, but can I nod off ,no,usually hapoens vetween 2.30 -4 , then I liven up again.
I never lay on the bed,and just cannot sleep during the day,I wake most days around 5,and normally go to bed around 9 and read for a while.
I obviously am not very bright then eithergrin

AGAA4 Tue 20-Jun-23 08:36:37

I rarely nap so this explains a lot!

Aveline Tue 20-Jun-23 08:33:44

It's very hard to time naps. I just find myself drifting off but don't check my watch at the time. My Fitbit records if I sleep longer than an hour but that's only ever happened twice in three years. I guess I must sleep for 15-30ish minutes. Lovely. Not today though. Meeting this afternoon so I'll need to stay awake. sad

Sara1954 Tue 20-Jun-23 08:30:48

I could sleep anytime, anywhere, except of course in bed at night!
If I feel myself dropping off I set the alarm on my phone for ten minutes.
