IBS & the heat

Where I live we have had thunderstorms but now have hot weather. I've been feeling very tired for the last ten days with the muggy weather and my IBS has flared up again quite badly. I am literally resting from sofa, to bed and back to sofa drinking water and herbal tea and trying to sleep 12 hours to have some energy. Is there anyone else whose IBS gets worse in hot weather? And what do you do to compensate?

Definitely!
If you Google "IBS Heatwave" you will find references to a Swiss study which looked at the reasons for this.
Sadly I don't have any solutions. I even find that drinking lots of water gives me tummy ache!

The hot weather is great when you are on holiday by the side of a nice pool !

First it was hay fever and it has passed off now .

I think that a change of diet has triggered off an attack of IBS and it's probably self induced !

Too much coffee will trigger it off and so does ice-cream .

I've had lots of iced coffees and rather a lot of ice cream as well .

I'm sipping tea and plain water every hour .

Mebeverine doesn't really alleviate it .
It will pass ...
I bet that I do the same thing next year !

Have you tried taking probiotics? Probion is the best brand. They have specific types depending on what your tum is doing. Maybe just half a tablet for a while alongside a few more veggies will help.

My IBS was quite uncomfortable during the warm weather and I find it difficult to eat anything. I take Colpermin peppermint oil tablets . It has now eased and I managed to eat dinner last night. I tried probiotics a while ago but they made me vomit.
I feel more sorry for DD who has Multiple Sclerosis and the heat makes limbs more stiff in sufferers. Her MS nurse is visiting today to alter her meds.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It was the hot weather. Where I live it has dropped to 21 degrees and all well again. Drinking extra water and sticking to really simply food also helped and I have downloaded the Monash university app to my smart phone which tells you what is High Fodmap and what is Low Fodmap. Onions and garlic are real triggers too.

I, too, have a really restricted diet and find that it generally keeps most symptoms at bay. I do find it very awkward if anyone asks us for a meal at home or in a restaurant. I now find it easier not to eat out at all as I feel it’s so rude to keep asking “What’s in it ?” when presented with a plate of food. Everyone and everywhere seem to put onion and garlic in dishes.

I find Colofac tablets from Boots great to stop the stomach cramps.

Thank you. I could write your answer myself. I check all the menus before we go out and often an after effect with something as simple as fish and chips (chips covered in gluten and tartar sauce with garlic). Totally agree with you about the onion and garlic dishes. I have sometimes also ordered three side dishes with no sauce i.e. green salad, new potatoes. Bonkers!
