When we lived on the edge of a forest in North Yorkshire, we regularly had a vixen and cubs sunning themselves on the back lawn. We also had Roe deer which used to eat our roses. We never encouraged the foxes by feeding them, and they stayed quite feral and nervous when we appeared, which suited us fine. Unfortunately, many do feed them, and that's when they become accustomed to being around humans, and start to push the boundaries. It's as well to remember that they are wild animals, so treating them as occasional pets does them no favours. Quite the opposite in fact, as one day they may confidently approach someone who doesn't find them quite so cute, and who may react in a quite destructive, or perhaps even lethal fashion. Best left to get on with their natural lives, and to admire from a suitable distance.
