Haha, yes it’s true.
What happened was this, I was newly working in a music store and a customer came in and asked to see and play on one of the pianos. So he sat down and played a bit then said he would take it ( it was the cheapest piano in the store.)He paid a deposit and left his details, which I’d been told was the thing to do, and asked how long delivery would be and when he should pay the final part of the bill.I didn’t know but thought it may be a few weeks. Another customer, a woman with a child, came in later that day and was also interested in the piano, I was mentally rubbing my hands together at the thought of a second big sale, as up to then I’d only sold a flute and some sheet music. Anyway, she did decide to buy it, and as before, left details and a deposit and I said we would be in touch about delivery and so on.
There was a sale in the store, so we were pretty busy all day, it was a Saturday, and about 4pm a Mum and Dad and teenager were asking me about the piano and I said have a play, it’s a lovely tone and all that sales patter stuff, we can order you one, it’s very popular😁 none of them could play, but the young teenage girl was going to have lessons. The upshot was they left a deposit and details.I was so pleased with myself.
On the Monday I told the owner, who never worked weekends apparently, about my sales on the Sat, and he went ballistic.
Turned out that particular model was low priced as it was the last of an old order it could be sold but we couldn’t get new ones in exactly the same or at that price.Ouch! So only one customer could have it.He had to make some very apologetic phone calls and blamed it on the new girl, me.
This was a lot of years ago and it was an old fashioned kind of shop, this wouldn’t be able to happen now.😂
