My DH has had a few things removed by various means from a cream to surgery. His dermatologist says not stress out about sun block at his age as the damage would date back to his youth.

I had a four week course of Efudix cream for my nose earlier this year.
The dermatologist made me promise to use Factor 50 every day from now on.

My OH had a basal cell carcinoma on the upper part of his ear, probably as a result of not using sunscreen/hat when playing golf, despite my warnings! This was removed earlier this year and, fortunately, it has healed really well.

After a BCC removal on my thigh , my plastic surgeon said I had to have six monthly check ups for two years ! The checkup is on the Lymph Nodes in my groin . Has anyone else been told this ?

PamelaJ1 Wed 12-Jul-23 08:31:03

I’ll put Fife on the list of good places to live with a BCC.
I would think that you will heal beautifully.

Gosh larry I want to move near your GP

My DH was referred in January to have two BCC removed from his head. He has heard nothing from the hospital and has found it impossible to reach them on the phone.
He has just left to go to his follow up appointment. He is not a happy man and I am waiting with bated breath as to the outcome of this appointment.
I think I worry more than he does.

Contact GP and get them to chase it. Good luck.

I went to see my GP about a lump on my back and he took lots of photos to send to the dermatology dept. at my local hospital. About three weeks later he rang at about 6 10 pm to ask if I had heard from the hospital. When he found out that I hadn’t he referred me on the two week cancer pathway. The following Wednesday I had a call from the dermatology dept. offering me an appointment for a week later.

I saw the registrar and consultant to be told it a BCC and that I would get an appointment for removal within 3 months and I have now received my appointment for the middle of August just within the 3 months.

I have to say that so far I have been very lucky with the speed things have happened. I now just have to wait.

Sar53 Tue 11-Jul-23 18:42:32

DH insisted that he saw the Consultant and she was not happy that nothing had been done.
She is setting the wheels in motion again and we are hoping that the wait wont be too long.
If he doesn't hear anything in a couple of weeks he has a number that he can ring.
Best of luck to anyone who is waiting for treatment.

Sar When I finally persuaded my GP to refer me (got him in an arm lock!!) I got a letter from the hospital to let me know I was on the list. The next communication was about18months later asking me if I still required my appointment 🤬
Hope your DH gets on well with his follow up appointment. Let us know.

Sorry I thought I’d worked out how to post the article. Turns out I hadn’t.

Extremely interesting article on BCCs from Dr. mark Porter in the Times today.

My nose when I fist went to Dr. A photo of my nose after surgery is near the beginning of this thread.
At this point they too used the camera and the camera said NO BCC. The camera was wrong so don’t take the result as gospel if it comes back negative. Show them these photos.

On Wednesday I have an appointment at Bristol to have the white headed spot on the end of my nose checked. I am pretty sure it is a BCC. Been there since early April. Embarrssing as it is right on the end of my nose, looking like a 'drip'

Have had three previous BCC's removed from different parts of my face over the past 18 years and each one presented differently. THe largest showing as just a small patch of light coloured skin. GP very reluctant to refer me on, but did so due my previous record. The ulcer went downards and when they removed it took eight stitches.

Dermatology at Bristol do not do biopsies, but have a special camera to carry that out non-evasively. Just hope there will not be along delay to have it cut it.

Every time I went to the doctor for 4 years I mentioned the small dot I had on my nose and told 3 different doctors that it bled about once a month and it was dismissed.Eventually when having a routine blood test a nurse
noticed it and said she’d seen the spot several times so I should see the doctor. The doctor said it wasn’t bad enough to be referred to Dermatology but I mentioned that I inject Methotrexate every week for severe Rheumatoid Arthritis she said that gave her a good enough reason to refer. 3 months later the Consultant confirmed a BCC and that it had grown up my nose so I had to have an 4 hour op to remove half my nose and replace it with a flap from my forehead. Huge scar from hairline to tip of nose. Please , please, insist on a referral or get a private consultancy with a Dermatologist if you have the slightest worry. Certain low grade Chemo drugs can make you prone to Carcinomas and probably other drugs may do as well so check side effects and slap on the factor 50. I always wear a hat to hide the ugly scar and protect my face then pay for a full body check by a Dermatologist once a year. Hope I haven’t scared anyone but if it makes one person check a worrying spot or mole with their Doctor it is worth it.

So sorry to hear that Kathryn! I think a lot of people will heed your advice. 👏👏

The BCC I had on my nose was just like a tiny glint of what looked like water when I looked in a mirror. Small as a pin prick. Other days I couldn’t see it. It was just there in certain lights. I even thought I hadn’t dried my face properly. It did get bigger so I had it removed and, as I said earlier I don’t have a fleshy nose so he was doubtful but he did manage to do it without a skin graft.

I have never sunbathed or used sunbeds but grew up at the seaside and we were always swimming and on the sands. No sun creams in those days, just calamine lotion after you burned! So the damage was done many years ago.

I don't go out in the sun much now but used to in my 20s. What age do these carcinomas start to appear?

I spotted mine when I was 54

I never liked the hot sun but as a child we all played out in it and ended up peeling, then as teenagers we sunbathed covered in olive oil

PamelaJ1 Sun 09-Jul-23 18:10:43

Rainbows perhaps they think we are just vain!
I think this is something that is getting more common so perhaps GP’s will recognise them better.
I did go and see a private dermatologist but she was also very dismissive. She was the one who cut my nose off!

I have had a letter to say my Dermatolgy appt will be approx Maech 2024!!

It took them nearly 4years to do mine so I had to have a huge lump cut out of my nose and then a skin graft. See photo above. I tried and tried to convince the GP and consultant that it was a BCC, it started very small but as I had already had one removed I recognised it straight away. Unfortunately the ‘experts’ disagreed.
It was done 2 months ago.
I spent my childhood in hot countries where, as a freckled fair skinned child I often burned.

I had the same problem, getting the GP to refer me. I had already had one BCC, so I knew what to look for. In the end I made an appointment with a new (young) GP at the practice and he referred me straightaway.

The consultant asked why I hadn't come for treatment before..... It was not through lack of trying.....

welbeck Sat 08-Jul-23 17:05:13

ime locum GPs are more likely to refer.
if anyone has any dubious spots, try to see a locum.

Any age but usually when you are older. I returned to the UK when I was 18 and had my first one at 40ish, this latest one appeared 36 years later.
A lot of men get them on their heads. It used to be very common in soldiers who had served abroad in the war.
