Are you a knitter?

I’m kind of addicted to it- a couple of months without knitting and I find I miss it. What colour are you knitting with if you are knitting ? I’m knitting in blue just now, just a sleeveless pullover. I was given a lot of wool and it has sat there for awhile but eventually I couldn’t resist churning out little garments for some of the younger family members. None of my family knits, they don’t have the patience these days but I like knitting in front of the tv because otherwise I feel I am wasting time ( I know, I know, silly isn’t it ?)

Having knitted since I was about 15, I changed to crocheting after a shoulder injury because I find it less strain on my joints.
It's still a learning curve!

The DGC don't want knitted garments any more ☹

TV+ knitting. Perfect combination. I have many cardigans to prove it! grin

I find knitting therapeutic but only do simple things that don’t need much concentration. I would love to be able to crochet.

I love to knit but sadly my family aren't keen on hand knitted items.

YouTube, Greenfinch!!

BellaCoco, Hooked by Robin and others explain it very well.

I used to always have some knitting on the go, the more complicated the better: Fair isle, picture knits or Aran. My fingers ache too much now when I try but I was amazed at Christmas about 5 years ago to see my niece wearing a "snowman and Christmas tree" jumper that I had knitted for my sister about 40 years ago.

That’s lovely, Salti. I’d be very proud, it must have been well done to last that long !

Your niece Salti, that’s lovely 🧶

I’ve just finished knitting a large adult jumper in Aran, now for the horrible job of sewing up!

Witzend Wed 12-Jul-23 12:04:27

I do a lot, but no garments any more - I make items for a charity that sends them (for free except for postage) to children’s therapists. all over the U.K. There’s invariably a long waiting list.
I use all the colours under the sun!

I also make Christmas items for Gdcs’ school raffle, a Nativity set and something else if there’s time. There’s also a blanket I get back to now and then.

I hate housework, so when I put it off for knitting at least I feel I’m doing something useful. 🙂

I’ve done lots of knitting over the years, baby clothes used to sell really well in the charity shop I worked in a few years ago.
Now I knit blankets for the Linus.Foundation who supply lots of charities who need them.
I like to knit when watching tv as likeNanna8 I don’t feel like I’m wasting time just sitting.
My Granddaughter has just taken a liking to crochet and made herself a jumper which she’s very proud of.

Salti Wed 12-Jul-23 12:06:40

This is the very last cardigan I knitted myself.

I really dislike sewing up (ask *Witzend!) but I find mattress stitch more enjoyable than other methods.

I am knitting peabody by Leila Raven and am starting the sleeves today. I spun the yarn and made 3 ply, which is worsted weight, its a rugged yarn and a heavy duty jumper, tweedy-looking

I am always knitting, spinning or sewing. I need to finish this jumper before I spin my next jumper weight. The next yarn will be two plies (strands) twisted together as a wool twist so will be light and airy

The biggest change for me was discovering circular needles, which I use now. I like to have the weight in my lap, rather than on straight needles.

My Mum was a keen knitter but sadly I didn’t inherit her skill. I remember in primary school age 7 persevering trying to knit a scarf and the teacher having to repeatedly rip out my mistakes.

In the last week of term those of us who hadn’t completed the scarf were told to take them home to make more progress. I persuaded my Mum to do a couple of inches on mine. I was so happy taking it to the teacher’s desk hoping she’d be impressed. I can still hear her voice as she looked over her glasses and said sarcastically “I see the knitting fairies have been busy with this scarf” I was mortified as everyone heard her and were stifling their giggles. I think she put me off knitting for life 😠

Yes, they are easier on the joints!

We wove ourselves scarves in junior school. They were in a simple plaid design.
I wish I'd kept mine but I suspect it got cleared out (my mother was not a hoarder).

Grannynannywanny, I stopped going to Brownies at maybe 8 because of the knitting you had to do for your Golden Bar - I was hopeless at it.

A few weeks later another girl from school - one of those good-at-everything types - came up and said I’m a sort of smugly accusing tone, ‘Brown Owl wants her red wool back!’
I felt as if I’d been accused of wilfully nicking it! 😂

Grannynannywanny Wed 12-Jul-23 12:39:38

Witzend 😂

I have knitted since I was taught at junior school. We had wooden needles, grey oiled wool and knitted kettle holders. Now I always have some project on the go. At the moment a shawl for the winter.

I love that knit Salti great colours
I knit for years but crochet now , and just throws or blankets

Knittynatter Wed 12-Jul-23 13:28:20

I knit when I can. My last garment was a baby’s dress which won a second place in the local agricultural show industrial tent. At the moment I am crocheting a granny square blanket in many colours, requested by my son for his black sofa! Next on the list will be a crochet granny square jacket requested by my daughter. They are very much the rage at the moment.
After that I’m not sure …. 😁

I havnt knitted for some years, but fancy doing a chunky cardigan, but I just cant seem to find a simple pattern. I havnt knitted since mastectomy x 2 and I have been left with Lymphoedema, so dont want to spend a lot just in case I find I cant manage it. Any pointers please? Thank you

Yes, they are easier on the joints!

They are also much more friendly than straight needles when travelling.

I like to have a few projects on the go - one that I can do without too much concentration and one that challenges me to develop my skills.
At present, a simple one that is just for me to do while I'm watching tennis. The tension and the stitch count are very variable but it is a shawl that I'll keep by the back door for the Winter for when I'm popping out to put something in the compost bin etc - and it will remind me of this Summer's excitements.
