What were your dream names for your kids when you were growing up?
I’m kind of addicted to it- a couple of months without knitting and I find I miss it. What colour are you knitting with if you are knitting ? I’m knitting in blue just now, just a sleeveless pullover. I was given a lot of wool and it has sat there for awhile but eventually I couldn’t resist churning out little garments for some of the younger family members. None of my family knits, they don’t have the patience these days but I like knitting in front of the tv because otherwise I feel I am wasting time ( I know, I know, silly isn’t it ?)
That's lovely, rubsysong.
I think that along with sewing up where necessary (I tend to make top-down jumpers on circular needles with no seams) it is really important to 'block' finished garments. I have a sweater frame, but you can also do it with steam, or by pinning out a wet piece of knitting and letting it dry to the measurements you want. Blocking straightens the seams (or outline of the garment) and evens out the stitches. It makes all the difference to the result.
Franbern I’m sure your grandchildren would be delighted to receive one of your hand knitted shawls if you leave it in safe keeping with their mother in the meantime. My daughter wasn’t aware that her much loved Gran had left the sealed box of baby knitwear with me to pass on. We opened it together when she was 6 months pregnant and a few tears were shed.
The shawl is a much treasure possession in our family.

During the last couple of years of her life when my Mum was starting to find it trickier to knit due to arthritis she set about knitting a christening shawl to put away for her grandchildren to use when they became parents in case she became unable to knit or in her words was “gone”.
She made a beautiful shawl and cardigans, mitts, hats etc. She wrote a little note and placed it in the sealed box of baby knitwear for whichever of my 2 then teenage children opened it first. Sadly, my lovely Mum was “gone” when my daughter was the first to marry . She died a few months before the wedding. 2 years later I gave her Gran’s baby box when she was pregnant. Both her children were christened in the shawl and a few years later it was passed on for my son’s 2 children.
It’s back in my possession now, washed and packed away ready for the next generation.
What a lovely idea. I am very unlikely still be 'here' when my g.children have babies and despite my best efforts in the past, none of my four daughters have followed me in knitting.
I was most surprised when - as each of my daughters had their babies, they asked me for hand knitted shawls, which I was delighted to do.
Think I may adopt this idea and make some shawls, etc and put away for use by g.children.
I am one that also feels that if I just sit and watch tv in the evening, I am wasting my time, but if I am knitting at the same time, then I have permission to watch tv!!!!
Always have two or three items ont he go at any one time, u3a knit and chatter group we make all sorts of things. And share new ideas. I do knit animals and other thing swhich sell eachyear at our local Pride Fayre. Have recently discovered ENTRALAC, - this is knitting that looks like it i woven, am happily making up scarves in Pride colours at the moment.
I know how to knit, but I'm not really a knitter, if you know what I mean. Have done lots of projects over the years, but get a bit frustrated with complicated patterns, and have never memorized one! I remember my Mum could do a complicated fisherman sweater, and by the second repeat she had the pattern memorized.
I also have to look at my knitting, so knitting while watching TV is out.
Here's my last project, 4 years ago now! I've picked away at a few smaller things, but I have a few items on needles still.

I bought some lovely wool from the Tasmanian Wool Centre, nanna8, it's a lovely place to visit if you're over there.
I like your Queen, Gran16 👸
I knitted Jean Greenhowe's snow couple last Christmas and most of the Nativity set
knspol, somebody around here knits really lovely baby/small kids items for the charity shop. There's often a buggy race there from the school - so they're really popular!
I usually have something on the go. I find knitting while watching TV stops me snacking lol. I prefer smaller things these days and have just finished a cardigan for a new baby, but I love making toys now. Jean Greenhowe is my favourite for toy patterns but last year for the Queen's jubilee I found a lovely pattern and ended up knitting 7 of them as they were so popular.
I sew more than I knit. My Nanna taught me to knit but I could never match her for speed. My DD asked me to knit my DGS a cardigan with toggles or big buttons as he turned two. Good job I did a bigger size because he's 3 now and I'm only just finishing it.
Thank you for the mattress stitch video, Doodledog. My mother always said, it doesn't matter how good the knitting is, if the sewing up isn't well done, the garment is no good.
I also like a circular needle but prefer to make from the bottom up. I made a top-down jumper last year but the neckline was no good and I gave the jumper away.
My current project is a pair of fingerless gloves for my sister whose hands are always cold due to various ongoing conditions Very fiddly, 4 needles size 12 in old money, detailed shaping, cashmere/silk yarn (50 grams enough).
But I'm also doing a dead simple jumper for watching Wimbledon.

My son often reminds me that I never got round to knitting him the jersey with his initial on it in a Phildar children’s book. I’ve still got the book, so I’m going to do it for his 50th birthday, for fun.
Love it!! 😀
I’m a nana knitter too. I mostly knit baby blankets as these are usually accepted with grace from friends family and people I work with. ( work in a nursery always someone pregnant) love to knit same as you nana8 in front of the telly.

I'm a passionate crocheter. Never without a piece of work in my hands. Not brilliant at garments but great with blankets and tablemats!!
Have you made the Sweet Blossom blanket Ailidh?
Several new stitches in that one for me - it's rather slow progress!Just seen yoùr reply, thank you! I've downloaded the pattern, it's very pretty.
I usually make patterns in the round, I find straight rows difficult to keep straight!!
I've done a few Crystals and Crochet, and this is my latest.
Not my colour choice, I prefer more muted, but a friend bought the wool and pattern, then found it was going to be too difficult, so I offered to make it up for her.
That's lovely, Ailidh
I'm not used to crocheting straight and admit the stitch count has wavered a bit but hoping the border will sort it out!
Not my colour choice, I prefer more muted
You wouldn't like the Day Tripper blanket, then, it is psychedelic!
Yes, I am famous in the family for knitting.
I will have a go at anything. I crochet as well but not so much.
I can't remember being taught but I must have been!
At present it's a V neck cable for my son and I have a waiting list for ski jumpers (fair isle) and a crochet blanket for a narrow boat.
It also stops snacking in the evenings!

So far I’ve done blankets in one piece, sticking stitch with moss stitch borders so no sewing. I’ve also mastered a way to join yarn which leaves no ends (instructions from Instagram). But I’m thinking of being bolder and trying a log blanket pattern (still in one piece) Or knitting very long strips. Also might go along to local knit and natter and see if someone will teach me to crochet. What about you?

I’d forgotten mattress stitch, it gives a very neat finish, I’m doing it now!
I also send my knits and crochet stuff to Knit for Peace.
They always seem pleased to receive things, I do check on what things they would prefer.
BellaT2 do you knit your blankets in one piece or squares?
Grammargran, if you knit in the tail ends as you go along, there won’t be any sewing in at the end. Especially beneficial when doing stripes or fair isle.
I’m always knitting or crocheting something. Still have a fair stash of yarn, bought over the years , often in sales. When I retired, fifteen years ago, I said that I’d have to live a long time to use up my stash. Once, many years ago, we thought we’d give having a tv in the bedroom a try. I couldn’t just sit and watch, so had to knit at the same time. DH got fed up of the movement caused by the knitting, so we quickly abandoned having a tv in the bedroom. Never tried it again, instead, continue to knit while sitting in my own chair.

I can knit, was taught in hospital as a 10 year old, by a kind Nurse, who brought me in a ball of shocking pink wool to practice on. Remember asking why it was shocking. Unfortunately, I get bored very easily with it,the jumpers I've started and never finished. Although can manage to finish baby clothes. A friend is a beautiful knitter, from aran to fair Isle to toys. Perhaps I'll get those needles out once more!!
I don't like knitting large garments now although I used to knit them years ago.
One is still on the needles from years ago because I got stuck on the cabling, have tried it twice since and abandoned it again.
Nice to know there are others out there, who abandon their knitting, but must admit to being able to cable,😂, my friend though is pleased with my discards.
I do like knitting especially on winter nights in front of the TV. Hurts my hands a bit now but think the exercise probably does them good. Don't really have anybody to knit for anymore, , have enough woollies myself and don't know anybody who would like one of my efforts.
