Superstition and St Swithin's Day

Don't know about St Swithin's day but here in SW Scotland we had fantastic weather in May and June. True to form when the school holidays started at the end of June the weather broke and has been a very mixed bag with rain at some point most days since then. The schools go back around 20 August and September will no doubt be beautiful.

In Lancashire it's raining again!!
Interestingly my DH pointed out an article he had seen on the internet where they were talking about the jet stream and how weather maps are used now. If you were to look at a map from 4 years ago for example temperatures would be shown. If you fast forward to today and it is shown as colours with the the hottest areas showing making it all look very dramatic (which it is in some areas - wildfires show that!) But the temperatures from 4 years ago were hotter than they are now!!
The power of the media can dramatically improve or worsen a viewpoint.

I'm not superstitious, I'll walk under ladders (unless there's someone up there working, and that's just common sense, rather than superstition), and don't worry about broken mirrors, crossed knives, new shoes on tables etc. Having said that, and I have no idea why, but I can't open any packet upside down and I always salute and greet ("Mornin'/Afternoon/Evenin' Captain"), a lone magpie. Both habit, I think... 🤷‍♂️. Also, I can't remember if it rained here (Staffordshire) on St Swithin's Day (I can barely remember what I had for dinner yesterday!). I also never believe weather forecasts. I suppose I'm just a grumpy cynic! Lol!

OddOne You'd remember the 15th if you were anywhere near the NE coast that day. We had spectacular thunderstorms.
And it's raining again this morning!!

We always get the rain first in Wales BigBertha My Mam used to say it was nice and clean. Got a bit dirty by the time it skipped over the border to England.

Is there still a hosepipe ban in the South-East?

Soaking on Dartmoor

It’s seems to have been raining forever here in Lincolnshire, beautiful morning today, gardener came and finished trimming my shrubs and cut the grass, but now clouded over and black rain clouds threatening! My brother was explaining all about the jet stream and it’s effects on our weather to me yesterday! Another thing I have learned, st swithans day in the 15 th July - I always thought it was in 14 th!!!

It’s dry/partial cloud here (Lancashire, or Greater Manchester to be PC). Just an average Summer’s day.😎 We had heavy rain over the weekend. No hose pipe bans here.

I bought a rain gauge in June. So far, on two maybe three occasions, it’s registered a whole quarter of an inch. Still a hose pipe ban here too, NE Kent.

It’s been a mediocre summer here in S Hants since the hot spell in June, we’ve had the odd dry day, it is reminiscent of a ‘normal British summer*.
St Swithin is buried about eight miles away from here, I might ask him nicely if we can have a dry August BH as I’m planning a family bbq, it’ll be just over the forty days since the 15th.

We seem to be on a 2 or3 day cycle this month. Torrential rain (filled the paddling pool to within 3cm of the top) then baking sun, sometimes with a breeze.

I would never make light of superstitions, many of which can be seen being played out in our daily lives. Some years ago now I was walking along Northumberland Street in Newcastle upon Tyne with my late Uncle Albert, when we came across a very long, window-cleaner's ladder, which was propped up against the wall, and was blocking the entire pavement. I diverted onto the road to walk around it, at which point, Uncle Albert laughed, said :"Don't be daft", and walked right under it. Suffice to say that over the next 46 years, he lost all his teeth... Don't knock it.

We had 40 days worth or rain over Saturday, but was dry yesterday (heavy rain forecast this afternoon, though) - mid South Wales

We had a day last week when it didn't rain. I ran outside and cut the grass!
The rain here has been torrential most days. Horrible driving in it with poor visibility and so much water on the roads.

Rain at some time every day and some of it torrential though I do live near the wettest place in England in Eden a green and pleasant land [everything is covered in moss]

I've 5 acres of grass waiting to be cut for hay. It was too early in June; goodness knows when it will be done. Late September at this rate

Have had three GC and two nieces here today, they have been in the spa-pool all afternoon despite the clouds and strong breeze, including when it was raining, they have all gone home now and the sun has decided to come out 🤬🤬🤬

As I used to say to my DC when we lived near the coast and it was raining - you're going to get wet anyway, you might as well go in the sea.
Meanwhile, the windbreaks and umbrellas were up!
