Superstition and St Swithin's Day

Much rain in South Wales

So far seems like rain every other day, sunny/cloudy and just pleasantly warm in between.

Rain pretty much every day here in Derby. I can’t actually remember a day when it hasn’t rained in about three weeks.
Either showers or torrential.
Thunderstorms too

No rain today (yet, but forecast for later) and none at all yesterday, so not quite the 40 days of rain, but boy, it sure feels like it with all we have had 😂.

Apparently the reason behind it is all to do with the jet stream.
Around the middle of July, the jet stream settles into a pattern which, in the majority of years, holds reasonably steady until the end of August This is the “science” behind the St Swithun’s Day tradition..
When the jet stream lies north of the British Isles then continental high pressure is able to move in, (maybe last summer?) but when it lies across or south of the British Isles, we experience Arctic air and Atlantic weather as has happened this summer with scorching temperatures south of the Jet Stream.
The jet stream is a fast-moving flow of air in the atmosphere which largely dictates the weather in the UK.
If we get stuck with continental high pressure then the weather will be sunny and warm, while Arctic or Atlantic weather systems will bring us wind and rain.
It is fascinating to see how country lore is so often borne out in our modern scientific age!

I can’t remember when we last had a day when it didn’t rain, though (hushed tones) it’s rumoured that tomorrow may be dry. The garden is running amok! (But I don’t like it hot either, impossible to satisfy!)

Lovely today, the washing dried outside and I enjoyed the sunshine in the garden!

Did we know about the jetstream years ago? I don't remember it being mentioned in weather forecasts years ago.
And I certainly heard a lot of weather forecasts, shipping forecasts and much discussion about the weather from DF!

It's stopped raining and it is lovely and sunny here now.But there is a big black cloud in the South east!!!

It's due to rain here again tomorrow and Thursday.

Have had three GC and two nieces here today, they have been in the spa-pool all afternoon despite the clouds and strong breeze, including when it was raining, they have all gone home now and the sun has decided to come out 🤬🤬🤬

As I used to say to my DC when we lived near the coast and it was raining - you're going to get wet anyway, you might as well go in the sea.
Meanwhile, the windbreaks and umbrellas were up!

I've 5 acres of grass waiting to be cut for hay. It was too early in June; goodness knows when it will be done. Late September at this rate

in North Norfolk

We had a day last week when it didn't rain. I ran outside and cut the grass!
The rain here has been torrential most days. Horrible driving in it with poor visibility and so much water on the roads.
