There used to be a lighthearted column in the DT called Peter Simple. I think it has continued with Michael Deacons’s The Way of the. World, but perhaps we need a forum called “You couldn’t make it up”
For inclusion may I offer (from todays DT) the following-

WEAR hats and eat bananas when you are abroad, Government health experts have advised holidaymakers as part of their “essential” travel tips
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a list of dos and don’ts for those packing for the summer break, with some tips seemingly more obvious than others
The advice, published on the government website, urges travellers to wear sunscreen and sunglasses, drink water and ensure food is cooked properly
To help “watch what you eat and drink”, the agency advises that a good option is “fruit that can be peeled by the traveller, such as bananas and orange”
UKHSA was set up in 2021 to replace Public Health England, a department plagued by accusations that it was acting as the “nanny state”
Its tips for coping with a heatwave include staying out of the sun in the hottest part of the day and removing “all unnecessary clothing like a jacket or socks” to cool down
Now in its “essential summer health tips for travellers going abroad”, first published last month, the UKHSA says: “Regardless of your destination, being mindful of what you eat and drink while travelling is important to avoid potentially serious foodborne illnesses, spread by eating and drinking contaminated food or water.”
Travellers are advised to wash their hands, ensure food is cooked thoroughly and that perishable items are refrigerated.
“Temperatures are soaring across Europe,” the UKHSA says. “Drink plenty of water to help prevent dehydration, protect yourself by regularly applying sunscreen with a broad spectrum of sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher, and wear protective clothing, such as hats and sunglasses.”

Teaching granny to suck eggs is presumably still to come . hmm

I had to explain “don’t teach your granny to suck eggs” to my grandson at the weekend. He wanted to know where I learned “all these ridiculous expressions” I keep trotting out!😁

Is wearing hats essential to the eating of bananas, do you think? What would be the consequences of doing one without the other? (It’s okay - I have my silly head on! I’ll get me coat!).

Foxygloves Wed 09-Aug-23 10:57:10

As long as you don’t confuse them Greyduster
As in “I’ll eat my hat” -another daft thing grans say or this:
During the pandemic FB circulated a poster saying “To prevent infection everybody should wear a banana”- (bandana ) 🤣🤣🤣

It certainly does read as 'stating the bleeding obvious', but a quick glance around the arrivals lounge at any UK airport this time of year, it is apparent that the hats bit, especially on men with tomato bald heads, hasn't got through grin

who was the glamourous lady who used to disport herself with a whole fruit bowl on her head.
she looked very healthy.
and paddington bear, with his secret iron rations...
as for spf of 15, in europe, it's hardly adequate here !

Grandmabatty Wed 09-Aug-23 11:52:18

Welbeck I think that lady was Carmen Miranda who sang about heatwaves while wearing an entire fruit bowl on her head

It never did get through! Result burnt head and complaints!

An extra bit of advice - make sure you have enough salt cos if you don’t you could get serious leg cramps, as I did. I small salty biscuit daily is enough

When the UKHSA was created from PHE, did the just rename PHSA, or did they recruit a whole new staff,

Sounds yo me like it was the former

There are plenty of other sources guilty of stating the obvious.

I absolutely love all the user's manuals that advise you not to wash electrical equipment such as toasters or to stick your fingers into the wall sockets!

During recent snowy winters the Danish State Railway has actually asked passengers boarding trains to stamp the snow of their boots prior to entering said trains, as "snow in the doorways prevents the automatic doors from closing properly, thus delaying departure"

Those of us not employed by the railway company felt that if they complied with the by-law that states it to be the owner or user of a property's responsiblity to clear snow from public foot paths and other outdoor areas used by the public, the train service could have proceeded as scheduled.

But perhaps we are just fussy!

Oh how I wish I could draw!
I can envisage an ape sprawled on a sun lounger on the beach, wearing a sombrero and peeling a banana; face covered in cream....

Just back from holiday 44°. You'd be surprised at the number of British holiday makers who lay in the sun for hours on end. Some had a little dip in a pool, came out, did seem to apply sunscreen then back to being prone on a sunbed for another couple of hours . To me there was no sunscreen capable of protection in 44° blazing sun. Did see bananas being eating!
