How different do you think GN would be if ...

... we all used voice messaging instead of writing our posts?

aggie Mon 14-Aug-23 11:00:20

How could that work ? Do the messages appear printed ?

DaisyAnneReturns Mon 14-Aug-23 11:22:28

Now your asking!smile

Going on when I use them in family chat groups, no you wouldn't be able to see them printed. I think a little icon would appear in the next block and you would just click on it. I can't think of any way of doing it on here that would show you how it looks on the page.

However, if anyone knows how to save a voice message as a file the could put it in the "Chose file" underneath just to show people.

If it simply printed it into the box I don't think it would make any difference, when it came to how people read or understand what the poster's saying. I'm dictating this now and the print is just appearing on the page. (although a prince appeared not print is) and it will look just as if I've typed it up.

I wouldn't bother with it if it was all sound files.

No, me neither.

Smileless2012 Mon 14-Aug-23 12:19:34

I don't even know what a sound file is blush.

Hellogirl1 Mon 14-Aug-23 12:27:23

You`ve lost me.

M0nica Mon 14-Aug-23 12:58:24

I enjoy reading and writing and being able to reread and rewrite. Anything working on voice files and you can count me out.

Blossoming Mon 14-Aug-23 13:11:04

No good to me, I find typing easier than talking,

Doodledog Mon 14-Aug-23 13:18:44

There is enough judgement on here without people judging one another on accent as well as everything else grin

welbeck Mon 14-Aug-23 13:22:15

exactly.
written word is more anonymous than spoken.
and therefore preferable.
i hate being seen or heard unless absolutely unavoidable.

Hetty58 Mon 14-Aug-23 13:28:52

I'm looking at this and listening to the radio as well - so it wouldn't suit me!

Bea65 Mon 14-Aug-23 13:32:56

Nooo have found sound messages frustrating..my DD uses them and I always have to fiddle with the sound button and the speed of some of them..have to repeat and hear again...

Dickens Mon 14-Aug-23 14:35:47

How different? Very different.

It would suit some of course - I wonder if they would be a minority?

I would definitely not be part of it it!

I like to sit quietly over breakfast or coffee, and just 'peruse'... couldn't be doing with fiddling around with the sound button, or having to pause and replay because I didn't quite get it the first time round... but, each to her /his/ their own.

SachaMac Mon 14-Aug-23 14:37:23

It wouldn’t be for me.

MaizieD Mon 14-Aug-23 14:51:40

Sorry, wouldn't suit me at all. I like to be able to read, and reread if necessary.

I don't like YouTube videos for the same reason, I don't remember every word that is said and it's much easier to skim a page of writing than it is to fiddle around trying to locate the time at which something was said. It makes following an argument really difficult.

I'm really sad that reading seems to have gone out of fashion...

As you're dictating your posts, DAR, are we allowed to point out when your speech to text software is making mistakes? wink

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 14-Aug-23 15:05:12

There are some posters who I think would rant and send. Takes more time to type - time to reflect.

Hithere Mon 14-Aug-23 15:06:27

Accents would be a huge issue for some posters

Theexwife Mon 14-Aug-23 15:07:37

It would identify members with more than one identity and returners under a different name.

Bella23 Mon 14-Aug-23 15:11:26

Does it matter why you are asking?

Maisie, I asked what difference people thought it would make rather than wanting to thrust it on everyone.

The software is a real problem, as is not having a keyboard but using the on-screen one. It's part of the murder (by me or Microsoft, I'm not sure which) of my computer. It died, taking with it my specialist software. I didn't always use it, but it had learned my voice, knew I wrote in English English, understood punctuation and was reasonably good at grammar, etc., etc. Unfortunately, these things are a) not cheap and b) use a lot of memory.

So, joy of joys, I found the tablet had a built-in dictation program. It is appalling! I still use it because I get tired due to my level of concentration when I'm typing. If it's something long and complicated, I run it through another programme, but oh, what a waste of time and energy. Anyway, that is the tale, or as the tablet would have it, the "tail" of my software and, thinking about it, that may be what led to my question smile

I just thought everyone would sound like their nicer selfgrin

hollysteers Mon 14-Aug-23 16:10:14

I wouldn’t use it myself, but I would like a like/dislike button.

Hithere Mon 14-Aug-23 16:27:13

Also huge issue for privacy concerns

Germanshepherdsmum Mon 14-Aug-23 16:34:30

Funny Daisy, I think just the opposite! Nice thought though!
