We were talking to each other about this earlier today. My top 6, just off the top of my head would be
Medical professionals ( Doctors and nurses not admin and managers)
Teachers - all levels
Plumbers
Political leaders ( if you pay peanuts you get monkeys)
Professional Drivers including air, sea and land
Builders

I would agree with your selection but not the sentiment: 'If you pay peanuts you get monkeys' which has been disproved in all sections of top wage earners; it just seems to promote entitlement and reduce commitment.

I would include all ranks of engineers, particularly the ones that do mysterious things with cables down manholes in the pouring rain to restore power.

Good idea with engineers. Husband’s profession ! 👏🏻

Refuse collectors

Wouldn't it be easier if people just said what jobs aren't worth paying decent wages for? There must be far fewer of them.

Influencers, “personalities”, YouTubers, anybody who’s famous just for being famous, because they’ve got a famous mummy or daddy or because they once ate a dingo’s testicle in a jungle.

Trades people
Sewerage workers
Bin / refuse workers
Fire and rescue
Civil engineers keeping transport flowing
Without these people there would be chaos.

lixy Mon 28-Aug-23 09:41:16

medical practitioners - doctors, nurses, ward orderlies, porters
care home and 'care at home' staff
refuse collectors
emergency service staff
HGV truck drivers
public transport staff

lixy Mon 28-Aug-23 09:43:37

and in schools - teaching assistants who work long hours for very little reward at present.

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Aug-23 09:43:39

I’d add police officers and scientists.

I don’t think that intrinsically any job is ‘worth more’ than another, we need people doing what needs doing to keep our society robust. It saddens me that people are judged by what they do for a job, although I respect high achievers in all fields.

NotSpaghetti Mon 28-Aug-23 09:49:17

Top 6?

People who support other people.
People who go "above and beyond" their jobs.

I don't think you can single out by profession as most groups of professionals have good and bad within, people who give and people who take.

crazyH Mon 28-Aug-23 10:07:12

My top vote is for the Scientists who sit in boring sterile labs, and discover treatments for life limiting diseases -

crazyH Mon 28-Aug-23 10:08:25

The rest are mentioned by the other posters

Jaxjacky Mon 28-Aug-23 10:15:06

I’d add those who keep the internet up, I was impressed during lockdowns, all those people working from home and schoolchildren.
Most of society now hinges on a complex wifi that works well.

henetha Mon 28-Aug-23 10:35:27

I agree about Scientists. The most important job of all, I think.

Agree absolutely grin

I think it's much easier to list those who wouldn't be missed if they were to disappear overnight than try to put the myriad jobs that each contribute to society into some sort of hierarchy.

#1 Public facing emergency service workers.
#2 Teachers
#3 Trades people
#4 Scientists and scientific researchers, particularly in medical research
#5 Care workers in both care homes and the community
#6 Engineers and engineering researchers, including computer engineering.

Any one in early childcare. Also
Teachers need a really good salary to attract the best to the job which in turn would give a better educated population .

Everyone, regardless of their profession should be able to keep a roof over their heads, put food on their table and have something left over for treats/luxuries.

LovesBach Mon 28-Aug-23 10:54:48

For me it would be those who are prepared to lay down their lives for others - soldiers, the fire and police services. Soldiers in particular get a rough deal, and can easily end up on the streets. I do reflect upon a country that is prepared to let ex army sleep on a bench, but can provide comforts, shelter and food for those who enter the country illegally. I am not suggesting that this group should be penalised, simply that both should be cared for in a humane way by a civilised society. Difficult question though - so many are deserving of more than the low wage they seem to be deemed worthy of receiving.

Juliet27 Mon 28-Aug-23 11:00:48

Very well said LovesBach

nanna8 Mon 28-Aug-23 11:15:18

Yes , I hadn’t thought of those people who put their lives at risk, good call Lovesbach.

Bella23 Mon 28-Aug-23 11:33:58

A question that is impossible to answer, all workers are needed for a society to run smoothly and should be paid accordingly.
I would agree about the famous for being famous they are not workers but self-publicists and do not aid in the smooth running and health of the country.

People tackling the biggest problems mankind faces (e.g. health, diseases, climate). We need to incentive people to solve them. Appreciate there's some overlap here.

- Scientists
- Engineers
- Researchers (e.g. medical)
