one of my most glamorous friends messaged yesterday to ask what foundation and blusher I use, because my complexion 'always looks fabulous'! blush

Has that happened to you?

A young wedding guest admired my figure - and my dress. It made me feel great, until my daughters were talking about her - and she'd said exactly the same to them. Obviously, it's her way of being friendly - and that's all.

When something like that happens out of the blue it is such a nice boost - regardless of whether you care what people think.

I do get compliments on my hair since I let it grow long and curly. Something that never used to happen to me. I've now started complimenting other people occasionally just to 'pass it along' - I've yet to meet anyone who doesn't respond with a huge smile and a 'thank you'.

A headmaster ( who didn’t actually know me very well) once gave me a reference: “Mrs. G can teach anyone anything .”It isn’t actually true because I was not very good with difficult students but it gave me a lot of confidence and sustained me all through my teaching career.

I used to look much younger than I was. People used to be amazed when I told them my age. But now, when I tell people I am in my 70s, nobody ever expresses surprise. What has happened! Must try harder! But I must admit it's all such an effort these days.

It's hard to get used to isn't it Skydancer, we've been spoiled. Right up until I was 60 I regularly had folks comment that they thought I was in my 40's, however now I am 68 and compliments have gone. I guess I look 68 now - ah well, I had my moment as did you!

I’ve never been very confident, especially at social occasions, and I had a husband who put me down all the time which didn’t help. But, many years ago one of his friends married a lovely Irish lady and we went to the evening do. All of our friends at the time were his friends but she was obviously new to the group. When our marriage fell apart a few years later she was very angry with him and told him what a fool he was and she told me that the night I’d gone to her wedding do ‘ you walked into the room, you were wearing a red top and a black skirt and you lit the room up’. I’d never had a compliment like that. They moved to Ireland and I used to visit her with my new partner ( she used to say your husband was handsome and charismatic but I can actually have conversations with this one). She died a few years ago and I hadn’t visited her for a long time. I wish I’d thanked her properly for what she’d said but I did tell her at one point how much her friendship meant to me.

When she spotted me I was very surprised to get “And here’s a lady with a very beautiful smile……and a very ugly floral coat”.

maggiemaybe that made me chuckle 😁

Are you going to tell us Kittylester or is it a secret - haha.

One of my children’s friends said “your house always smells of soap” I was u reasonably happy as I do clean but I don’t use fake smells just normal cleaning stuff.

My DD and I were walking out of a bar in Times Square and after my DD had left a man stopped me and told me I had a very beautiful daughter - course I already knew that!!

When I went for my last Covid booster the nurse said there was a mistake on my records in that my DoB was wrong in that it should be 10 years later because I didn’t look old enough, I reassured her that the date was correct. The same thing happened when I had a blood test at the local surgery. It’s very flattering but I think I look my age.

Lovely! What a boost.

Why would working for an employer make any difference

When you work for a large organization you (may) have to conform to a dress code and certain standards of dress. You have to look neat, tidy and professional. Especially in a customer facing environment.

When you say goodbye to that life you dont have to conform to any standards - except public decency when you go out. So you can do away with uncomfortable clothes like bras, tights, etc.

My self respect comes from inside me, and not what randoms think.

Cossy Mon 04-Sept-23 11:37:29

Never 😂😂😂 But always great to get a compliment xx

In Las Vegas on holiday, a lady in our group complimented me on my haircut and wanted to use my hairdresser. The lady in question lived 300 miles away from me and then said "Oh - maybe that's a bit far to go for a haircut" !

I was in my friend’s gift shop with my son and 2 granddaughters and had brought them to the restroom when my son came along to wait for them have their turns. The 7 yo came out first to find me and another shopper said, “your mom went into that room.” My son heard that and couldn’t wait to tell me and did so in front of a few others with a huge hug!!

Oopsadaisy1 Mon 04-Sept-23 09:10:42

I was complimented a few years ago, I was asked my daughters age in front of a table full of people (about 20 strangers) when I said how old she was the woman loudly asked me to repeat it, when I did she looked surprised and asked me if I was 5 when I had her, as I looked too young.

Honestly I didn’t know where to put myself, I was bright red with embarrassment and just managed to stutter a thanks….

MrOops said he was surprised that anyone with a guide dog was allowed on a ship. (We were on a ship). Brought me down to earth!

That's really special, Aldom.

We were walking along in Berlin when we heard a bit of a commotion - a woman gesticulating and shouting, weaving her way towards us and hurling insults at everyone she passed. When she spotted me I was very surprised to get “And here’s a lady with a very beautiful smile……and a very ugly floral coat”.

Aldom Mon 04-Sept-23 08:48:48

This thread has reminded me of the most special compliment I have ever received. The words were spoken by a dear friend who had dementia. Soon after she moved into a care home I visited her. She could no longer remember names, but when she saw me her face lit up and she said, 'Oh, it's the lovely face.'

kittylester Mon 04-Sept-23 08:27:23

I echo what Foxy said too.

My face before it has been BB creamed looks horrendous - especially to me.

silverlining48 Mon 04-Sept-23 08:19:42

Over the years I was taken as my new baby daughter’s grandmother on TWO different occasions.
Then later out with an attractive elegant ( but older than me) friend was mistaken as her mother.
Now in my mid 70 s often get taken as younger than I am.y time at last! smile

MerylStreep Mon 04-Sept-23 08:15:13

Spot on Foxy

No 😂 my daughter has incredible style and taste. She has borrowed several pieces from me over the years.
My mother was very stylish.
