Isn't it marvellous summer is over!

I am sitting in the kitchen looking out of a large window, watching th trees swaying in the breeze, with just a hint of yeloow about them.

The rain is sluicing down, I can hear it as it hits the windowpanes. and the water is dripping off next door's roof. The lawn is completely green again.

After all those windless relentless days of sun and no movement, it is lovely to see nature alive again.

Come the weekend I will start wearing winter clothes and we will stop eating salads and return to soup, sandwiches and baked potatoes.

Isn't it marvellous that summer is over!

No, we were supposed to go out today, a long journey to pick up medication from the hospital and some shopping.
There was a gale blowing, the rain coming down horizontally so we postponed it.

I feel sorry for anyone who has to go out, particularly if they have to rely on public transport and a long walk either end.

Beautiful autumn is here - although this summer has been rather more to my liking than previous years. Hot, sleepless nights, scorching temperatures, I dislike it all. The softness of golden autumn, with its long shadows and glorious colours, restores calm. Yes - it is wonderful.

Witzend

I do like autumn, and was looking forward to cooler weather after 38-40 deg on holiday.
OTOH I just came back from shopping like a drowned rat, having forgotten to take a brolly. It was blowing a gale (I didn’t mind that) with the odd spot of rain, but then the heavens opened.

Yes, crisp sunny autumn days, crunching on fallen leaves walking through the woods is lovely.
Idyllic.

But the reality is usually different.
But rain is forecast for at least a week, soon there will be piles of leaves to sweep up and storms to dodge.

I like all seasons apart from the depths of winter when I just can’t wait for spring.

Gingster Wed 20-Sept-23 15:53:48

Love it!
Not having to drag myself around in the heat feeling drained with no energy.

Autumn is my favourite season with warm colours of nature,
Walks in the woods and along the beach. Not so many people around and coming back to a slow cooked dinner, wood burner and reading a good book.
Pulling the curtains and cosying down for the evening.
Cold airy bedrooms and being able to sleep . Lovely! 🍁🍂🥮🎃🕯️

Crisp, sunny Autumn days, especially with the golden/russet colours of the changing trees can be lovely, the same can be said for Winter days, although I do increasingly find the glare of low Winter sun a curse to drive in. It's all the dark afternoons and grey, drizzly days that are so dreary.

Callistemon21 Wed 20-Sept-23 16:01:04

Walks in the woods
You'd get rather soaked round here.
Drip, drip, drip.

But it will be sunny at 7pm 🙂

Lovely, lovely autumn!

Casdon Wed 20-Sept-23 16:05:30

Absolutely not. The wind and rain in the last few days has decimated my lovely garden, the lawn is like a quagmire and the nights are drawing in. I love the sun, I love the summer. I hate the cold, and find Autumn utterly depressing, because everything is dying, and it’s the longest time until we will see the spring again. Roll on April.

sodapop Wed 20-Sept-23 16:05:51

I dislike the heat as well so looking forward to Autumn. The forecast however is for high temperatures next week and into October. 32 degrees forecast for our Departement. All too much.🥵

TwiceAsNice Wed 20-Sept-23 16:07:48

No I love spring and summer I was born in July. I like wearing fewer layers and flip flops or strappy sandals. I loathe January and February after Christmas ( do love Dec as Christmas build up is in it) I hate snow and am scared to walk and drive in it.

Roll on next spring although I shouldn’t be wishing my life away I hope ( if I’m well) to live as long as possible

Callistemon21 Wed 20-Sept-23 16:09:05

Give me another 2 weeks in May

Yes, and half as much again of both April and June 😃

Callistemon21 Wed 20-Sept-23 16:09:36

Must order some vests

Walking in the muddy woods with dog poo hanging on the branches…. lovely
Dark dismal mornings, dark dismal evenings
Shivering in the ‘can’t afford to put the gas on’ evenings putting thick clothes on, all squashed up, no more freedom, no more legs and arms out, no more warmth for ages and ages.
All dreary, dark and miserably cold, no more rays on my old bones
Perhaps with a family round you, a warm well insulated house, and the money to go on sunny holidays it may be more bearable but for many it’s none of those things

Depressing and dismal for soooo long
we get about a month of summer if we re lucky and still people want to deny us that

downtoearth Wed 20-Sept-23 16:22:25

Born end of December,I feel happiest in autumn winter, but I also love spring with everything re awakening.
The months I hate are july and August, not for the long sunny days that I love, but the overwhelming humidity that I cannot cope with.

Georgesgran Wed 20-Sept-23 16:23:36

Although I like Autumn and Winter clothes - hides the flab, I’m with BlueBell and Casdon. You can stuff the dark nights and dark mornings too!
Today has brought rain (again) of Biblical proportions - there’s a chap building an ark down the road!! The garden’s a mess.
Same here Kate1949 - must have nodded off!

grannyqueenie Wed 20-Sept-23 16:27:15

I love autumn and don’t mind winter so long as there are not too many dark, wet days! However this year I’m not sure there was too much of a summer so I’m not quite ready to let it go just yet!

Whitewavemark2 Wed 20-Sept-23 16:29:03

I like the winter for about a month - then I long for the lighter days and warmth.

Iam64 Wed 20-Sept-23 16:30:08

In north Manchester we have had a handful of hot days. Mostly we’ve had grey, damp or downpours. So much as I like autumn it’s come round too soon.

rafichagran Wed 20-Sept-23 16:39:41

I love Autumn and Winter as well. I also love snow, everything looks so clean and peaceful.
I don't mind any of the seasons really.

MiniMoon Wed 20-Sept-23 16:52:44

Summer, you say, we haven't had any really hot days since the middle of June. Lots of grey skies and incessant drizzle, and the wind blowing with rarely a still day.
I had to wear a waterproof poncho at the Tatton Park flower show.

I don't relish the thought of winter. I don't mind the cold so much, but I detest the short days, I dislike having to put the lights on at 4pm.

Hetty58 Wed 20-Sept-23 17:01:12

At last! I love the changing weather and this morning's early dog walk was wonderful. There's fresh air, less dust/pollen and shade - exactly what suits me. I'm happily back in my jacket (over pyjamas) and much more comfortable.

M0nica Wed 20-Sept-23 17:07:46

I started a day class today, the first one since COVID terminated my last one in March 2020.

Curiously enough, despite the wind and rain, I quite enjoyed the 12 mile drive there and back, as with the 'active' weather in my OP. I am trying to return to normal life, while I can follow it, a health scare earlier this year, makes me really how precious it is and having to drive in conditions that required me to be awake and alert, actually was very good for me.

I like the long dark evenings and cosying up inside, but also the feel of weather that is invigorating.

Same here 👍🏻

Tho I totally get BlueBelle’s comments about warm comfy houses with the family. If you’re poor and feeling the cold or alone then Autumn and Winter can hit you hard.

Delila

Every season is beautiful in this country, it’s hard to choose which I like best, but they’re all welcome when they arrive.

I agree Delilah. Although I must admit to getting a bit fed up with the cold and dark nights by the time we get to February and March. If it was possible I would remove February from the calendar 😁 We've had a week of rain and another week coming and I'm loving the cooler nights but missing the warm days and the sun.
