I was waiting in a hospital cafe today and an elderly couple were at a nearby table. The man asked me what the time was and I told him.
He was well dressed and his wife was in a wheelchair with a lovely coat, nicely styled hair and painted nails. I noticed she was very much in her own world with her head down. Her husband was hugging her, kissing her cheeks, stroking her hair and helping her drink from a cup.
Every now and then he whispered something in her ear and she whispered back as he clung to her hand.
An ambulance pulled up and the driver came in and started to wheel the lady towards the vehicle. I heard the husband say he would drive himself and meet them there. He looked really broken but managed to catch his wife before she went in the ambulance and hugged and kissed her again.
I am guessing she had dementia and was returning to a Care Home because I had sat there with my Mum in a similar scenario a few years ago and followed in my car.
I picture him going home to an empty house and spending all evening thinking about his wife. 😢 it really choked me up.
