Just heard it’s grandparents day on 1 st October. Who would have known ?

I'm a bit of an anti-Christmas grump too, but good luck to those who love it. Each to his own. But it really has gone over the top in recent years. It can become a financial burden.
But must admit that I'm pleased that my sons never forget
Mother's Day.
Perhaps we should celebrate these things more simply and don't overspend.

However, it’s the loss of simplicity and the pressure to have “bigger and better”, the financial pressure and, to some extent, the emotional blackmail used, and the attempt to reduce the true meaning of these events which saddens me

Agree 100%. I dont think I remembered mothers day after I left my parents home and I stopped celebrating christmas in 1979. Already the "dreading christmas with the in laws" threads are beginning on Mumsnet. The COL crisis seems to me an excellent reason to tell people that we are not doing gifts/cutting back this year except for immediate family.

Grandparents day, Father’s Day, pets birthday, etc, etc - all commercial enterprises to try to get people to spend money on cards, flowers, the latest “must have” gadget, dog/cat toys etc , etc. (Seems to work, too, or these things would just fizzle out).

Mothering Sunday is now very commercialised so that buying a card and flowers is no longer seen as enough - people are “encouraged” into buying even more expensive gifts such as pampering weekends, afternoon teas, lunches, etc. for their mums, because how can you be a loving child if you don’t?

Then of course, we have Christmas, Easter, and other religious festivals along with Halloween and bonfire night, which in themselves are fine, of course. It’s just that they are all now viewed as great money making opportunities (and have been for some time) for commercial businesses, which many people buy into.

The commercialisation of all these events puts great pressure on people to participate to the extent that some put themselves under huge financial pressure to comply. The subliminal suggestion being that if you haven’t filled your celebratory table with the best food and drink and bought all the latest, must have presents and provided the best party for your friends bursting with the best party food and enough drink to put a pub to shame, then you have indeed failed and let your family and friends down.

Of course, you haven’t, but that commercial pressure is very strong to resist. However, maybe it’s time to take a step back, take stock and question this?

Surely, our grand parents, parents, children, siblings etc, are not going to stop loving us because we haven’t bought into the latest commercial ploy to try to get us to part with our hard earned cash in order to provide all these things?

Sadly, many are taken in by it, but does it make you happier at the end of the day? I will stick my neck out and argue that “no, it does not”. What it does do is fill the coffers of commercial enterprises.

I might sound a bit of a kill joy - I’m not - I like my celebratory occasions, these times are special.

I bought my mum a card and some flowers for Mother’s Day when she was alive, I’ve bought gifts at Christmas (just not lots of expensive, latest “must haves”).

However, it’s the loss of simplicity and the pressure to have “bigger and better”, the financial pressure and, to some extent, the emotional blackmail used, and the attempt to reduce the true meaning of these events which saddens me .

I have just washed my bedding…it’s out in the garden. Not sunny but very warm so it will dry.. hurrah for a lovely day.

I'm washing the DGC's bedding.

Isn't that what Grandparents' Day is all about?
😁

rafichagran Sun 01-Oct-23 16:06:29

Mine have not caught on to it, thank goodness.

Well I’m sorting the cellar. Not a grandchild in sight (they’ve obviously all forgotten our very big day grin). I have found a forgotten bottle of fizz behind a pile of old junk, though, so perhaps we’ll open it tonight and toast ourselves.

Today is the day
Happy Grandparents Day to all

Oh, thank you!

Obviously it's not on our radar and the DGC didn't say anything even though they stayed the night 😁
We did get hugs, though, that's all we need.

silverlining48 Sun 01-Oct-23 12:04:16

We are ‘celebrating ‘ at home on our own…. wink

I just googled welsh cakes. Now I want to make them! They look yummy!

They're very easy!
And even easier if you buy them.

I have a packet from M&S just for the DGC but opened it earlier and ate one.

I just saw tomorrow is National Pancake Day. I will be planning accordingly by driving myself over to IHOP and getting pancakes for breakfast.

I used to love IHOP but there would always be such queues I rarely went in. It was always a case of being at the right IHOP at the right time for me.

BlueBelle Tue 26-Sept-23 20:14:54

Never heard of refreshment day either 😂😂
I don’t want any more days thanks mothers and fathers is enough maybe too much

Callistemon21 Tue 26-Sept-23 19:59:08

International House of Pancakes. Which is embarrassing because there is nothing international about them? grin

Oh, they're American!

Why aren't they in Wales?

Well, we have got Welsh cakes!

They have the best cinnamon roll pancakes though. Yummy! We actually rarely eat here. It is overpriced any more and I can make pancakes at home much cheaper.

Alas, I had a kolache today. Which is nothing like the Polish kind. These are yeast rolls filled with a breakfast meat and cheese. It originates from Texas.

Us Americans have some very eclectic food options based on regions of the country!

Callistemon21 Tue 26-Sept-23 17:24:45

Ps what's IHOP?
I do fancy pancakes now!

That is odd!!

We already have Pancake Day, Shrove Tuesday.

Mind you, any excuse. 🥞

Did you know that parts of Australia have a Bank Holiday next Monday for the King's Birthday? It does appear to be a moveable feast.
Odd that we don't get a public holiday here.

Or abstaining from chocolate

Or wine.

M0nica Tue 26-Sept-23 17:15:34

jaberwok The Lenten fast was not going without food for 40 days and nights. In the medieval period it was not eating meat or dairy in Lent, hence Shrove Tuesday pancakes to use up any milk or eggs around and, usually, only eating once a day. More recently it has meant abstaining from meat and only eating one main meal and two small meals a day.

Wait, for tomorrow I am going to have a Compliance Officer come and explain Situational Awareness while eating pancakes for breakfast, then have dumplings for dinner and applesauce for dessert while watching a documentary about Shamu the Whale.
