Is this an American invention being peddled in the UK to encourage people to buy cards and gifts?

Theexwife Thu 21-Sept-23 13:38:46

Also known as Hallmark day.

The following is from the Sun Life website www.sunlife.co.uk/articles-guides/your-life/what-is-grandparents-day-and-when-is-it-in-the-uk/

“Originating in America, Grandparents’ Day became a recognised holiday in 1978 following Marian McQuade’s campaign to create a day to celebrate grandparents.

After volunteering in a nursing home, she discovered that many of the residents got little to no visitors. This inspired her to create a day that highlights the importance of the older generation to the younger generations.

On 3rd August 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a proclamation saying that the day is intended “to honour grandparents, to give grandparents an opportunity to show love for their children's children, and to help children become aware of strength, information, and guidance older people can offer.”

Grandparents’ Day was first introduced in the UK in 1990 by Age Concern. Since October 2008, it’s been celebrated on the first Sunday of October every year.”

I find the rest of the page cringey, bordering on the patronising

I'm waiting for 'my neighbour's budgie' day.
Hallmark day says it all - Hallmark make greetings cards.

Yes, I think that was Georgesgran’s point!

No one has to support this day unless they wish to but if it helps one or more lonely grandparents to see or hear from their love ones it is worth mentioning. A visit or phone call would I’m sure make someone’s day. I’m lucky as I see my little grandchildren every week.

I agree Polly4t42 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I’ve told this before but it still makes me chuckle. DH and I went to a Grandparents’ Day KS1 assembly once where the children presented their doting grandparents with buns and cards they’d made. DGS1 was blushing as he handed us a card with the greeting “Best grandparents” over a picture of a blond, curly headed woman and a man with glasses. He didn’t really need to follow it up with “It’s not for you”, as it was patently obvious it was the other lot. Good job we’re not sensitive! grin

I kind of like the idea BUT as grandparents are also parents and we have Mothering Sunday and Fathers Day it does seem a little overkill !

Redhead56 Sat 23-Sept-23 12:17:23

Never heard of it.

BlueBelle Sat 23-Sept-23 12:19:02

I think it’s nonsense to make money for the card companies
Thankfully none of my 7 have caught onto it

I have heard of grand-parents day although I am unlikely to get a box of chocs if mentioned to my offspring, I am lucky to get a bunch of flowers for Mothers Day some years it is completely forgotten. I was browsing in a charity shop a few years ago and came across a colourful mug with a picture and written on it was to "Best Grandmother in the world" the lady in the shup talked me into buying it. I must get it out on 1st October and use it that day for my cups of tea even though I bought it myself.

leeds22 Sat 23-Sept-23 12:38:06

Never heard of it and I guess neither have our GCs - thank goodness.

Jaberwok Sat 23-Sept-23 12:54:26

A card or a small gift on Mothers day or Refreshment Sunday is quite nice particularly for children , but the others are just silly and a way to get people to part with their money. I certainly don't wish my much loved grandchildren to give me more than a passing thought in their very busy lives on a designated day or any other day come to that.

GrannyGravy13 Sat 23-Sept-23 12:58:04

I am fortunate to have the most fabulous grandchildren, (oh yes I am definitely biased) so every day is grandparents day as far as I am concerned. 💙❤️

Wiser Sat 23-Sept-23 13:04:31

Although sometimes as a gm it does feel like you are taken for granted

The first grandparents day (if I remember correctly) was in 1990 on September 22nd. That happened to be my mother in law's birthday and her first after the birth of my first child. She made a huge fuss about it being grandparent day and how they'd obviously invented it especially for her as she was now a grandma and it was her birthday!

We did buy her a card, though I remember my brother muttering something about not buying anything for our mum who had been a gran for a while by then. I was grateful it didn't seem to catch on and rarely heard about it since.

On 1st October I will be with my DS and DiL as it is also my grandson's 3rd birthday. I'm assuming the other GPs will be there too so I may say something about it being our special day too. But I won't be as entitled as my MiL was! I don't think my DS is aware at all so don't expect it to be noted. They do always send flowers for Mothering Sunday though so I'm not complaining! Probably invented by card manufacturers to boost sales.
