I was given a most marvellous yellow satin quilted bed-jacket that was lined with flannel when as a child of seven I was ill in bed for over a month.
At the time I was thrilled with the present, but was hardly ever allowed to wear it.
Because I spent so much time ill in bed as a child, I have never in all my adult life, which fortunately has been blessed with good health, worn a bed jacket, nor do I ever eat a meal in my nightie or dressing-gown, as doing so reminds me all to much of the worst times in my childhood.
In Denmark, houses are better insulated, even old ones, than in Britain and kept warmer, so keeping warm in bed is not a problem, even in the wet autumn weather that seems to have started now, or in the depth of winter, but I clearly remember wearing woollen jumpers in bed in Scotland as a child and teenager.
