RING Doorbell TV Advert

Seen on CH 5 yesterday, one which specifically mentions that you can use it to screen visitors - and to ignore the "boring insurance salesman".

I suspect that many of us who have such doorbells often use them in this way - to identify unwanted callers and either ignore them or tell them its "not convenient". First time Ive seen an ad specifically suggesting owners do this.

And the wonderful thing about these devices is that they run on an app on your tablet or mobile. So you can still respond but tell the caller you are not at home. In effect you could be anywhere in the country and still answer. And as with any mobile device the signal can be "poor" so you cant continue the conversation.

Like having your own private butler.

I saw an advert on YouTube yesterday for a discreet “spy” camera. No wiring, hide it anywhere, huge field of vision. One of its selling points was to deter “nosy neighbours”. How it would do that wasn’t explained, but it occurred to me that it was actually ideal for spying on the neighbours, who would have no idea they were being watched.

We have two, one for front and other for the back door.

They are useful, when anyone calls the app makes a sound and you can see who they are, and decide whether to answer the door. You can also answer if away from home and a delivery is made. Saves the driver taking the parcel back to the depot.

Its interesting that these devices which were invented for security are now used for social and cutlural reasons, such as ignoring unwanted visiters, or vetting callers before we decide whether we wish to interact with them. For example I dont answer to anyone dressed in work" clothes unless Im expecting a tradesperson to do a job. Properly qualified trades do not need to tout door to door for business.

Yes they are very useful for deliveries or collections. However I tend to know when a package/pickup is due. If its just a random person with a package they may want me to take it for someone else and I dont want to assume responsibility for it. So I just tell them Im not able to get to the door and direct them to another house.

Mine sends messages to my device even before they ring the bell. Many people dont realise this and believe its only filming when they press the bell. So they try to be clever and just knock in the hope of evading having their picture taken. One of my neighbours once knocked for 10 minutes without attempting to ring the bell.
