I really don’t know why people can’t just stick to a healthy diet and exercise. Why put stuff like that into your body. As for gastric sleeve/bands I cannot understand why anyone would want to damage their body in that way. Healthy diet and exercise is the only way to achieve long life weight control.

Sadly it just isn't that easy for some people - overweight relatives on all sides, genetics, ill health, medication, depression, financial...so many reasons why 'people can't stick to a healthy diet and exercise'. So easy to write them off if you are lucky enough to have the time, energy and money to keep your weightin check.

Work 3 jobs, look after children and house, try to pay bills in days of never ending economic struggle? Oh, and then try to find the time and energy to make healthy food and exercise? Dream on, but easy to cast blame...

Whether you’re in show business or some high profile job, women who go thin have lost their emotional quotient.

In order to conform and be accepted they succumb to practices that turn them into former shadows of themselves. Grotesque.

Especially bad… when they are older women and try to compete.

Younger women who go on this path then have a lifetime of maintenance and expensive upkeep ahead only to regret it later.

It even changes their personalities - sad. What happened to natural beauty?

I have no sympathy for these people whatsoever. I am diabetic, this drug was working extremely well for me, it sorted all the nasty spinoffs of diabetes, high blood pressure, cholesterol etc to name but a few. The drug had been withdrawn, the one I'm taking now is not as good, I don't feel as well. So thank you, you crazy people taking a drug designed for treatment of diabetes and over using it, for us diabetics who need it, it's not available. I hope you're satisfied.

But Jens, if you are previously diagnosed as diabetic, can't the doctors prescribe the drug for it's intended use?

I'll tell my chronically ill daughter that *Mrs Thatcher *and her doctors who will insist its the steroids that she has to take that have seen her weight balloon by several stone. No amount of dieting will shift it and she cant exercise because of the Ehlers Danners syndrome that has her bedridden most of the time .
Good to see grannies on here who are much more knowledgeable than consultants !!

Oh don’t be silly. Of course there are always going to be exceptions to the norm with people with health issues. and I wasn’t suggesting otherwise.

Calm down.

You did say I really don’t know why people can’t just stick to a healthy diet and exercise

And now you know, MrsThatcher. There are many and varied reasons why.

Oh dear, is it not available on prescription only still?

I am being prescribed ozempic for diabetes but supplies have been problematic as people were buying online for the weight loss side effect. I had to accept a higher strength as the dose I was on was unavailable. Even though I injected less than the full dose, my queasiness started again horrendously. I think I'm gradually adjusting to the new dose and last week the pharmacy gave me a pack of my original strength which was still outstanding. The injections cause one to feel sick and that makes wanting to eat become rare, and when I do eat I feel full quickly. I've lost a huge amount of weight. I'd already lost quite a bit over a number of years but the ozempic has been responsible for a much faster loss. I'm now at a stage where I'm almost at my target weight, and other indicators show my blood sugar has fallen significantly, as has my blood pressure. I've gone from being very obese to only a little overweight and my weight seems to have plateaued. It has worked/is working for me but I won't go too far! Many years ago I lost weight by normal dieting. Although the charts said I was still overweight I couldn't shift any more weight and though my body looked good, my face looked gaunt and 'unwell'. I won't be going there again!

I hope the fact that the drug is now licenced for weight loss doesn't make supplies impossible for us diabetics. To be prescribed it for weight loss one has to have a BMI over 30 but many people with lower BMI are purchasing it or trying to get hold of it inappropriately. My BMI is now about 27 and if I maintain this I'll be happy. When people come off the injections they sometimes regain the weight so I'm wary of stopping. Time will tell and I will be keeping a careful check.
I found out today that my brother has been diagnosed prediabetic. He has always been very active, fit and a healthy weight, so he is keeping a closer eye on what he eats. Hopefully he will avoid the problems I've had over the years. Our grandmother died as a result of diabetes so we are aware of the genetic predisposition. Having finally reached a reasonably healthy weight I'm more active than I ever was when I was younger and I hit age 69 last week!

Jens - I hope supplies for you become available and you return to feeling well again.

It really annoys me that people like her are using up all the ozempic, which is initially only approved for type 2 diabetes to control glucose levels
It was found that a side effect is weight loss when taken in double the recommended dose, now diabetics who has been prescribed it by their Gp find there’s a world shortage of it as people are paying for it for weight loss.

I touched on this yesterday with a younger than me friend .

Dieting and exercising are great -but not when you become ill looking and it's spoiling your life .

And that's exactly what's happened to one of my friends .
She used to be really fun and fat - very funny and great company .
Then , she had a gastric bypass .
Instead of a new lease of life - she talks about it all the time , shows her scar and her old clothes all pinned together .
She doesn't work anymore , go out or even clean her house .

Perhaps Sharon Osborne has anorexia / bulimia .

Thank you for your insightful and practical comments. As someone working in the field of obesity (for over 20 years), the research suggests that you are very mistaken.

Obesity is complex and has many contributing factors. The guilt felt by patients surrounded by those with your mindset, often pushes them into self isolation and comfort eating.

Maybe they have surgery to lengthen and improve their quality of life? Maybe they are exhausted with the constant judgements and directions from those who appear to have all the answers?

I have yet to see anyone requesting surgery who wasn’t an expert at dieting and hadn’t tried the usual regimes already. Most have lost (and regained) multiple pounds over the years

Maybe they simply ignore the opinions of others and do what is best for them and their families?

I’m more concerned about the global shortage of drugs designed for those with diabetes and obesity. These have been used in the US to get women of a healthy weight to fit into a size zero! In the UK, we have ā€œaesthetic practitionersā€ (aka beauticians) obtaining the drugs and getting prescriptions signed off by unscrupulous clinical prescribers. Go on Facebook and you can find illegal generics being shipped in from overseas. No one knows exactly what they contain but people are desperate to lose weight and will take the risk of toxic medication or bariatric surgery in Turkey performed by non specialists with no care taken in screening or aftercare
