Things you don’t see/hear anymore

I'm in Bali at the moment and I have seen lots of white dog poo 💩

We have four blackbirds in our garden and next door have a tree constantly filled with sparrows.

Never see metal wheeled roller skates. My sister and I shared a pair. One each !

Sparrows and blackbirds. Our garden is full of crows, magpies and pigeons these days.

Anne French cleansing milk. Spangles, scraps from the fish &chips. Conductors on buses. Fairy snow

Also Sweet tobacco that came in a pouch like packet.

We had the aforementioned party line with our first phone in the late 60s. We had a very amicable system with our neighbour . Transatlantic calls had to be pre booked in those days. The neighbour had a son in South Africa and she would tell us in advance if she had a call booked. Likewise if my parents were phoning home to Ireland we’d let the neighbour know .

The problems started when they moved away and the next occupant of the house kept the party line. The woman frequently lifted her phone and did her best to eavesdrop on our calls. The click and the heavy breathing was a giveaway 🤣

Antimacassars

I have friends who are in their early sixties and come into the category of elderly but not old. They both had older parents and have not had children. They have antimacassers on their chairs and settee and marching arm protectors. They prefer blankets and bedspreads to duvets and have a candlewick bedspread in the spare room. They are having their house redecorated and have chosen anaglypta wallpaper. Nearly everything in their house is old fashioned but it is a welcoming home, which is all that matters.

I have a friend whose house is exactly like that. She’s a single woman in her mid-seventies.

I don’t think even my parents had antimacassers!

My daughters were always outside in their prams. The eldest one would sit or lay there quite happily looking around and stay clean and tidy. The younger one would throw everything out of the pram and end up looking a total disaster.

I'm horrified surprised to find that fluorescent socks are still available

They had their carpet replaced fairly recently and it is brown but with the large swirls that were popular around forty years ago.
Oh!! Do they even make that any more?
Perhaps it's coming back in again, with orange and brown patterned wallpaper 😲

I've still got Tapley furniture too, relegated to the study, it's very useful.

Mind you, I know plenty of people who are 20 years older than them and aren't a bit old-fashioned.

Although some of our furniture is "mid-century"!

I agree with you about older people who are not old fashioned. I have quite a lot of mid century furniture too (Nathan).

My friends’ house is dated rather than retro - it reminds me very much of my grandparents’ house. Their three piece suite has wooden arms and legs and is of a style more usually associated with nursing homes. They had their carpet replaced fairly recently and it is brown but with the large swirls that were popular around forty years ago. They are lovely, kind people who took early retirement and consider themselves busy but what they do in a week, l would probably do in a day.

The mention of television sets that could be tuned to only broadcast itv? Was that really allowed with no license payable! I remember coin- fed tv sets at peoples houses.

Which put me in mind of Party Line. (not as exciting as it sounds) -where you shared a phone landline with a neighbour. What an absolutely bonkers idea🙃

When we moved here, which wasn't exactly in the Dark Ages, if we picked up the phone to make a call, we sometimes heard another conversation, not even a direct neighbour but traced to someone who lived behind us and a few doors away.
