A man with a beret and strings of onions on his bike for sale who rode up and down our council estate. This was in the 1960's.

I have friends who are in their early sixties and come into the category of elderly but not old. They both had older parents and have not had children. They have antimacassers on their chairs and settee and marching arm protectors. They prefer blankets and bedspreads to duvets and have a candlewick bedspread in the spare room. They are having their house redecorated and have chosen anaglypta wallpaper. Nearly everything in their house is old fashioned but it is a welcoming home, which is all that matters.

Televisions that were tuned so you could only get ITV - no need for a licence

Hula hoops, I was a expert!! dress guards on lady's bicycles, relief nib pens, desks with ink for same. wolf whistle,disappointed not to get one! nappysan for terrytowel nappies. Pets, kittens, puppies being sold in pet shops, glad that's been stopped. My grandparents bought their first puppy from Oxford Covered Market. Lucky Billy went to a good home, others maybe not!

To Jaxjacky: I used to play jacks. On the ground, in the school playground. There was also pick up sticks (with a magnet.) If you moved more than one stick at a time you were "out". There was also a fad for weaving sets (from a toyshop), and a scaled -down version using wool and a cotton reel with 4 pins bashed into the top.

Used to love that game, you may also remember KANACKERS?
( probably spelt wrong) it was two small hard balls tied onto the end of a shoelace type string, you moved quickly moved your wrist up and down to Mack them clack together, we all had badly bruised wrist because of this game but it didn’t stop us

We all used to like the taste of Angiers Junior Aspirin Calendargirl unfortunately my cousin liked them too much, he climbed up and took the bottle out of the cupboard & ate the lot (no child proof bottles then) he ended up in the children’s hospital but was ok.

White dog poo was collected and used to make soft leather gloves or so DH tells me! Wonder what is used now.

Not just white poo, Huia, and it was used in the manufacture of lots of leather goods.

Angiers Junior Aspirin.

I know you don’t give children aspirin nowadays, but they were orange flavoured and I loved taking them.

Seem to have survived.

When I first took my then BF up north (my DD had suddenly died, & this was BFs first meeting of my family, poor lad) he was quite amazed, and a bit disappointed, to not see women in curlers standing at their doors & having chats with the women next door over the shared hedges!
We laughed our heads off. Les Dawson had a lot to answer for!!

For BlueBelle, who regrets not having a "decent Govt" anymore? WHEN was THAT?!! I've been voting since the late 60s, rarely missed, but I've long given up on seeing any politicos, any badge, who show anything but incompetence and corruption.

I suggested back in about the 90s that we should sub-contract our Govt out to somewhere sensible like Holland or Denmark, both well-run and great places to live? They could do a better job on about 2 days a week.

At elections for many years I have had to consider which option is the least worst, or choose a protest vote of some kind.

Proper children’s comics! I recently tried to find one for our grandson, but was disappointed to find only expensive puzzle books and cheap plastic ‘free’ gifts!
My favourite was TV21 - based around Gerry Anderson’s creations - Thunderbirds, Fireball XL5, Stingray, etc.

The smell of cigarettes everywhere- thank God!🙄 I was watching Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone - still the best!), everyone in the film was smoking. Nowadays everyone on TV/films has a glass of wine (can’t stand the stuff myself😝).
There are still reins available for toddlers - usually with a little rucksack attached.😎 Indispensable if you don’t want backache!!
