Finding things you thought you'd lost

It was so lovely to find a gold earring I thought I had lost at home on the floor. It has sentimental value because my late Dad bought me it fairly soon before he died. I was out at an evening function and spent many minutes looking round the car by the light of my phone. A couple of friends helped, bless them. It was raining, too, which didn't help. Anyone else had this relief at finding something they thought had gone?

I know it's only "stuff" but sometimes it is unbelievably sad to have lost something with a personal connection to someone no longer with us.

We had a bad house fire six years ago and lost virtually everything.
What really upset me though was a shawl my Mum had crocheted for me as a teenager. It lay across the corner of my bed.
The builders admitted they'd thrown it in the skip as it was filthy (water and smoke) but I could have washed it.
My husband and I spent several evenings searching through the skip to no avail.
No money could replace it. I cried for days at losing my shawl 😥

When dd2 was about 3, she was very attached to a tiny monkey toy, only about 4 inches tall. She took it on holiday and unsurprisingly managed to lose it on the beach.
The staff were great, and the chap raking the sand every day, had a good look, but no luck.,

The following year, we went back, same room, right on the beach. There was heavy rain one night and first thing next morning, when we stepped out, lo, amazingly enough, there it was, lying fully visible on the wet sand.

I told her he’d been waiting a whole year for her to come back for him, so she’d better look after him very carefully now.

A few weeks later she lost him again! But this time, it was for good. 🙁

The people who bought our previous house appeared one day with a peridot and diamond ring which I had left under the lining of the little bedroom safe and hadn’t actually missed.

I had misplaced, or considered lost, a watch. I was a bit distraught since it was inherited from DH's aunt. It is a dressy watch that I only wore on occasions (the dial is tiny and almost impossible to read). The thing is, I was going through my jewellery box for a bracelet, and realized the watch wasn't there. I couldn't even remember the last time I wore it. I checked my small dressy clutch, but not there, so I told myself that the clasp had come undone and it was gone.

Behold, just at the end of September, switching from summer to winter handbag, the watch was in the side zip pocket! Woohoo! I must have put in there for a reason, but I can't remember it... anyway, it has a new battery and back in my jewellery box until the next fancy evening event.

NotSpaghetti, sometimes, any 'loss' is just too much when you've lost somebody - and so much - already.

I was almost run over by a truck as I stopped to pick up a button from my coat (on a busy road, on a hill) when grieving and not thinking straight. I can still see the horrified look on the driver's face as I stepped back with a second to spare.

Sadly, sometimes you just give up hope...

When the kids were here, I'd sometimes run out of teaspoons. I think they'd got binned along with the yoghurt pots.

I bought five pairs of cheap reading glasses last year (2x magnified) - having got fed up with leaving them upstairs etc. Now, I'm down to one pair, having searched everywhere (shed, garage, garden too). Where did they all go?

Out to lunch with a friend, I realised I was only wearing one earring which was annoying, because it was one of my favourites. We retraced our steps to see if we could spot it and I searched every corner of the car, but to no avail. Got home, and what did I see on the bottom step of the stairs? One lapis lazuli earring! I'd been out without it all that time.
Meanwhile, where have I put my Swiss Army knife?

Lost a favourite ruby ring but my help found it in the freezer when defrosting.

A few years ago my driving, liscence it was the original one I first got. People at work had laughed at it and said it looked like something from WW2. I searched every handbag ,the car and I went through drawers and places in the house. I had to apply for a new one, have my photo taken etc.
A few weeks after I got the new one I realised there was something stuck in the carpet behind the bed when I lifted the carpet there was the driving liscence. I had vaced under there quite a few times.
Then I remembered quite a while before tipping my handbag out on the bed when I had lost something, I thought the driving liscence was in a secure pocket obviously not.
A gold chain bracelet I wore every day for work. Again a thorough search of house, car and workplace. I gave someone a lift and she said there's something stuck in your drink holder it was my bracelet. It must have fallen off whilst I was driving the lock catch had broken.

When we moved into our last but one house, the drawer from my paternal grandmother's workbox (which was made for her by my paternal grandfather) went missing. I'd left hubby to ensure everything went from the old house to the new as I had my hands full with 3 kids and the dogs. I was heartbroken, but resolved to keep using it.
During the move to this house earlier this year it surfaced again, 22 years later.

Well I shall have to say a prayer to St. Anthony as lost the opal stone as of a ring I really loved. Hunted high and low, inside washing machine, hoover bag but to no avail. Could be anywhere but will try the prayer.

When DS was a toddler, 13 months old, we had all been invited to a rather grand wedding. Packing to go to Scotland for the wedding, panic! I could find only one of his new shoes, his first pair. Put him into the pushchair, race down to Clarks, get another pair (money tight in those days) and off we went.
Weeks later, I found the odd shoe which he'd stuffed into the double radiator in his room. You can't tell a toddler off, but I was quite annoyed!

I didn’t lose wedding and engagement rings, but someone else did. She left them in M and S beside hand cream samples. I was really pleased to know that she got them back after I handed them in

Yesterday I backtracked the entire side of a big field when dog-walking, about 1/4 of a mile, to find the favourite ball as it wasn’t in her mouth and I thought she’d dropped it.

It was in my right hand… not even in a pocket.

Cagsy Fri 06-Oct-23 15:12:22

Gundy I hope you find them soon as most are time limited and it would be sad indeed to lose the value of the gifts put on there for you.

Gundy Fri 06-Oct-23 14:38:36

On the other hand I have not “lost” this but I cannot find it no matter what! It’s here somewhere… a small plastic bag of gift cards totaling approximately $400-$500.

I don’t always run out and use these gifts right away. I set them aside and did such a good job of it I can’t remember where I put that little plastic bag. Driving me nuts!

One of these days when I’m not looking for them, I’ll come across them - and will have a shopping, eating spree with my friends.

I purposely hide certain things (when I am going away) and this is what happens. 🙄

Years ago I came home from a research trip in the south of France, unpacked and next day half-way thourgh giving a lecture at the University, remembered that I hadn't seen the ear-rings I had taken with me for a formal do.

Got home and went through everything I had taken out of my travelling bag, all papers, books that I had had with me - no joy.

Turned out the bedroom, as it was the place I had done my unpacking, still not joy, so I gave up the ear-rings as lost, assuming I had left them in my hotel room in Marseille.

A year and a half later, I moved my bedroom dressing-table in order to repaint the bedroom, and lo and behold, there were my ear-rings half-way hidden under the vinyl floor covering!

I had electricians in to investigate my electrics tripping. They had to move my sofa to get to sockets that were behind it. The sofa is too heavy for me to move so while they were out of the room I went round the back and found my address book, which had been missing for a while, a glue stick and a bra! The address book and glue stick were responsible for the sofa's recliner mechanism having jammed - not broken as I'd thought. As for the bra, I realised I'd discarded it because it was rubbing uncomfortably when I had shingles! I had no idea it was missing as all my bras are the same M&S design. It had been there for some years! I'm just glad I retrieved it not the electricians. blush

When my daughter was three she had a new pair of Startrite shoes. One shoe disappeared and we turned the house upside down. A few months later hubby put on his wellies and found her shoe inside! We remembered she had been making us laugh wearing his boots. It was too late as she'd outgrown them.

We had a few days in the Lake District to do some autumn hiking .
On getting our belongings together in the hotel I realised my much loved bracelet was missing.
Searched the room/ bathroom , stripped the bed , looked under the furniture etc all to no avail .
Informed the hotel just in case but felt it was lost forever high up on some fell .
Had a summer holiday back in the lakes , all good.
Decided we'd enjoyed our autumn break so re booked the following year . On getting ready for a walk pulled my hat and gloves out of my rucksack and there was my bracelet in a glove !
Daft thing was it had been sat in my rucksack back in the lakes during our summer break but didn't need warm , waterproof gloves then .

My husband is a use something and put it where he finished sort of person, so I spend much time hunting usually with little success. At the moment I am searching for hyacinth vases. He admits to emptying them when I was away, washing them, and storing them for this Autumn...but has no idea where. I shall celebrate greatly if I find them before I have to order 6 more! ;)

On my way to work one winter morning I noticed that one of my hooped earrings had gone missing. I thought maybe it had attached itself to my coat or scarf - it hadn't. I retraced my steps to see if it was on the pavement - it wasn't. Reluctantly, I gave it up as lost forever. Two days later, walking the same route along a busy pavement there it was! My white gold earring sitting in the middle of the pavement! To this day I cannot believe how it was there especially as I had walked past the same spot at least 6 times. I offered up a prayer of thanks and a little nod to my mum who always believed in little miracles.

Some people think a prayer to St Anthony of Padua helps find lost items.

My Mum always said a prayer to St Anthony.

I now ask my late Mum to help me if I lose anything and she never lets me down.
