Finding things you thought you'd lost

It was so lovely to find a gold earring I thought I had lost at home on the floor. It has sentimental value because my late Dad bought me it fairly soon before he died. I was out at an evening function and spent many minutes looking round the car by the light of my phone. A couple of friends helped, bless them. It was raining, too, which didn't help. Anyone else had this relief at finding something they thought had gone?

Not mine, but I once found a very tarnished silver claddagh ring in - wait for it! - one of my deep, pull-out pan drawers. How on earth it got there is anyone’s guess. It had been missing for ages, thought gone for ever.

This was many years ago - a dd had been given it by an Irish friend when she was maybe 10.

She’s now over 40 and was wearing it - nice and shiny! - yesterday.

I thought I'd lost a gold and ammolite pendant bought for me by my husband. The box it lives in was empty, the last place I remember wearing it was at my DD's flat in Glasgow. She searched for me but couldn't find it.
I was looking for something else, going through the pockets of my little backpack and found my pendant in the narrow front pocket.
Why I put it there, I have no idea.

My bus pass! I use it a lot so it was a major PITA to lose it. I couldn’t think I’d dropped it, so checked in shopping bags to make sure I hadn’t inadvertently dropped it in one of those.

A couple of months later, well after I’d received a new one, I was rummaging in the freezer and found the old one - stuck to some frozen item I’d evidently bought that day.

Shame I didn’t think of that before - had to supply a different photo for the new one and I look 20 years older. 😱

Husband collected prescription eye drops 2 weeks ago. They vanished. We looked in all the usual places, no luck. Last night I fluffed up cushions on sofa and there they were!

I found my personalised leather glasses case in the pocket of a hoodie I hadn’t worn since early spring. Of course I had already sent for a new one and now one is surplus!

Sitting on the loo, I happened to look down at the floor and discovered the diamond that had fallen out of my engagement ring a few days earlier. Thank goodness I don't vacuum daily!

The kitchen fitters found my opal and diamond ring when they dismantled our kitchen to fit a new one. It had been missing for about 10 years. I was so pleased to see it o gave the chap a hug on my excitement. How it had got onto the back of the kitchen units heaven knows. When it first went missing we had the whole house upside down searching. I'm now very careful about where I put my rings of I take them off for washing up etc.

DH and I were walking along Beach to Burghead for lunch - (why?!) - on a very windy day when one of my dangly earrings was wrenched out of my ear and away by the breeze. "Don't worry" says he, "I'll find it for you on the way back"...and, Reader, he did! I still don't understand how he did it, though....

Shopping in Asda my engagement ring felt uncomfortably right so I put in onto another finger. Back home it was missing. In a panic I went back to Asda to the enquiry desk...and there it was. Some kind person had handed it in and didn't even leave their name so I could thank them.

Just before Covid struck and they made us isolate for 2 years here in Victoria I bought a new blouse and forgot it with all the stress. I found it recently ,still with the tags on, in a bag at the back of the wardrobe. Felt like I’d been given a present !

I lost a key ring with both car and house keys on it. DH insisted I had left the key in the front door and wanted to change the locks. 10 days later I found the keys in the greenhouse!

Many years ago my husband lost a hard contact lens whilst we were walking in the Peak District. Try finding such a tiny thing amongst the blades of grass covered in shiny dew! I had the bright idea of throwing some grass in the air to see which way the wind took it. And when it dropped down there was the lens!

Some people think a prayer to St Anthony of Padua helps find lost items.

Some people think a prayer to St Anthony of Padua helps find lost items.

My Mum always said a prayer to St Anthony.

I now ask my late Mum to help me if I lose anything and she never lets me down.

On my way to work one winter morning I noticed that one of my hooped earrings had gone missing. I thought maybe it had attached itself to my coat or scarf - it hadn't. I retraced my steps to see if it was on the pavement - it wasn't. Reluctantly, I gave it up as lost forever. Two days later, walking the same route along a busy pavement there it was! My white gold earring sitting in the middle of the pavement! To this day I cannot believe how it was there especially as I had walked past the same spot at least 6 times. I offered up a prayer of thanks and a little nod to my mum who always believed in little miracles.

My husband is a use something and put it where he finished sort of person, so I spend much time hunting usually with little success. At the moment I am searching for hyacinth vases. He admits to emptying them when I was away, washing them, and storing them for this Autumn...but has no idea where. I shall celebrate greatly if I find them before I have to order 6 more! ;)

We had a few days in the Lake District to do some autumn hiking .
On getting our belongings together in the hotel I realised my much loved bracelet was missing.
Searched the room/ bathroom , stripped the bed , looked under the furniture etc all to no avail .
Informed the hotel just in case but felt it was lost forever high up on some fell .
Had a summer holiday back in the lakes , all good.
Decided we'd enjoyed our autumn break so re booked the following year . On getting ready for a walk pulled my hat and gloves out of my rucksack and there was my bracelet in a glove !
Daft thing was it had been sat in my rucksack back in the lakes during our summer break but didn't need warm , waterproof gloves then .

When my daughter was three she had a new pair of Startrite shoes. One shoe disappeared and we turned the house upside down. A few months later hubby put on his wellies and found her shoe inside! We remembered she had been making us laugh wearing his boots. It was too late as she'd outgrown them.

I had electricians in to investigate my electrics tripping. They had to move my sofa to get to sockets that were behind it. The sofa is too heavy for me to move so while they were out of the room I went round the back and found my address book, which had been missing for a while, a glue stick and a bra! The address book and glue stick were responsible for the sofa's recliner mechanism having jammed - not broken as I'd thought. As for the bra, I realised I'd discarded it because it was rubbing uncomfortably when I had shingles! I had no idea it was missing as all my bras are the same M&S design. It had been there for some years! I'm just glad I retrieved it not the electricians. blush

Years ago I came home from a research trip in the south of France, unpacked and next day half-way thourgh giving a lecture at the University, remembered that I hadn't seen the ear-rings I had taken with me for a formal do.

Got home and went through everything I had taken out of my travelling bag, all papers, books that I had had with me - no joy.

Turned out the bedroom, as it was the place I had done my unpacking, still not joy, so I gave up the ear-rings as lost, assuming I had left them in my hotel room in Marseille.

A year and a half later, I moved my bedroom dressing-table in order to repaint the bedroom, and lo and behold, there were my ear-rings half-way hidden under the vinyl floor covering!

On the other hand I have not “lost” this but I cannot find it no matter what! It’s here somewhere… a small plastic bag of gift cards totaling approximately $400-$500.

I don’t always run out and use these gifts right away. I set them aside and did such a good job of it I can’t remember where I put that little plastic bag. Driving me nuts!

One of these days when I’m not looking for them, I’ll come across them - and will have a shopping, eating spree with my friends.

I purposely hide certain things (when I am going away) and this is what happens. 🙄

Gundy I hope you find them soon as most are time limited and it would be sad indeed to lose the value of the gifts put on there for you.

Yesterday I backtracked the entire side of a big field when dog-walking, about 1/4 of a mile, to find the favourite ball as it wasn’t in her mouth and I thought she’d dropped it.

It was in my right hand… not even in a pocket.

I didn’t lose wedding and engagement rings, but someone else did. She left them in M and S beside hand cream samples. I was really pleased to know that she got them back after I handed them in
