I’ll start with I hate the perfumed fabric conditioners and love the smell of real cigarettes. My daughter doesn’t like the smell of freshly cut grass and likes the smell of petrol.

Mollie3 Wed 04-Oct-23 14:24:53

Hate the smell of BBQs, any strong cheap perfume, air fresheners (open the windows). Love freshly cut wood, new leather, the sea, lavender, rubbed tomato leaves, creosote.

Love the smell of petrol too! Also a lit cigar; my late DH smoked them often and it reminds me of him. He did give up though, over 20 years ago, when we bought a brand new car - he said he didn't want to spoil the smell of the leather seating!
Also the smell of his aftershave, Chanel Pour Monsieur; I have kept some, and only have to open it to bring him back..... It was the only scent he ever wore.
Love the smell of frying onions.
And the smell of a freshly lit match.

When I was a teenager all the boys smoked and ate mints. Kissing was a mixture of those smells and was very attractive at the time!

Likes: a collection of old paperback books, smells to me like coffee cream chocolates
Waitrose Bathroom Cleaner: smells just like "dressing" the stiffening applied to new cotton dresses when I was a child

Dislikes: what a joy to know it's not just me that hates heavy perfumes, patchouli is the worst for me, brings a mental image of a "crusty" with a can of lager and a poor patient dog on a string
As a child I was convinced celery was called,"smellery", still think I was right!
Thanks for an entertaining thread

I cannot walk through a perfume dept (such as airport duty free). All perfume disagrees with me and gives me a violent headache.
I have had to move seats in restaurants due to strong perfume emainating from a nearby diner!!
All I ask is that others are aware that we do not all embrace strong scents !!
I however can tolerate ocean smelling wash detergents and lemon scents .

I love the smell of self tanner, after dried on skin. Also Old Spice cologne…reminds me of my dad.

The smell of a Christmas cracker when it bangs

nexus63 Wed 04-Oct-23 17:09:31

i hate the smell of coffee, i love the smell of tar being laid on the roads/pavements and the old firelighters you used to get (firelighters don't smell the same now).

Blinko Wed 04-Oct-23 17:17:33

Freshly laundered linen dried outdoors; tar, creosote, bitumen.

Snowbell Wed 04-Oct-23 17:43:11

Love smells of fresh ginger, new car interior, fried onions.
Hate smells of fried mushrooms, fresh plaster

Hopikins Wed 04-Oct-23 17:55:38

I love the smell of Pigs, my friend lived in the countryside and the bus I caught to visit her stopped just by the Pig farm, I absolutely loved the smell when I alighted from the bus. I also love the smell of Tar, my Mum would tell me to breathe deeply when we saw men working on the road and we passed the tar barrel, she always said the smell was good for us.

Ohmygoodness54 Wed 04-Oct-23 18:29:31

Love
Baking cakes
Lilies
Hyacinths
Sweet peas
Creosote and tar
Bleach
Clean washing dried outside
Turf/peat fires
Connemara whiskey (which reminds me of the fires mentioned above)
My cat
As another poster mentioned, new carpets and mew car smell. I don't know what it is they smell of though😊.

Hate
Vanilla anything,
Almond ditto
Patchouli (even when it was very popular when I was younger I always thought it awful and it seems to cling to everything.
Lamb cooking (though I do like to eat it once it is cooked, I know, weird!)

Lucyd Wed 04-Oct-23 19:16:55

Love the smell of tar, pears soap, baby talc, books, leather, lily of the Valley, freesias, old fashioned roses, Vicks vapour rub, puppies. Vanilla and heavy perfumes make me gag. Once had a baby in vanilla scented bubble bath and had a horrendous migraine afterwards. Still get migraine several times a month and being in a stuffy or heavily perfumed environment always brings them on.

Does anyone remember the smell of steam trains? I love it, and you still can smell
it at heritage railways when they have engines under steam.

Redrobin51 Wed 04-Oct-23 20:03:50

I adore the smell of Bitumen when they do the roads and also the smell of Coaltar soap. Don't smoke but love the smell of cigar smoke but only when it is outside. I also hate the smell of Youth Dew and not keen on Vanilla.
Love the smell of dogs and horses especially horses breath.

Sawsage2 Wed 04-Oct-23 22:47:57

I love the perfume Eau Dynamisante.

Kathmaggie Wed 04-Oct-23 22:58:37

Just love the fragrant smell of fresh basil, thyme and rosemary. Chanel Coco and leather.
Hate sweaty feet and stale cooking smells - also not a fan of Poison and Eden perfumes

NotSpaghetti Wed 04-Oct-23 23:04:30

Fireworks smell pretty good... so did Germolene (spelling??)

lizzypopbottle Wed 04-Oct-23 23:14:42

Love:
•Clean washing, dried outdoors and fresh off the line
•New fabric for sewing
•L'ancome Tresor, which I wear every day but I'm 'nose blind' to it within moments.
•Freshly cut carrots

Dislike:
•Male sweat after a run. My husband smelled of wet iron railings when he came back from a run.

mousemac Thu 05-Oct-23 06:35:35

I hate most artificial scents.
Love the smell behind the ears of a happy cat, otter spraints and sunny skin.

mrsgreenfingers56 Thu 05-Oct-23 10:56:04

Youth Dew perfume and Poison perfume I thought were overbearing and so strong gave me a headache when friends wore those fragrances.

GrannyGravy13 Thu 05-Oct-23 11:59:48

I love the smell of Chanel No.5 on other people, on me it smells like cat wee.

I love the smell of cigars, reminiscent of my Father
I love the smell of the garden in summer just after its rained
I love the smell of new hardback books
I love the smell inside a new car
I love the smell of a horse and it’s stable
I love most Jo Malone fragrances

I cannot abide the smell of, tarragon, water left in flower vases too long, dogs (I love them but I am extremely allergic), fried food, sweaty bodies and hospitals.

rafichagran Thu 05-Oct-23 14:30:43

Hospitals is one smell I hate too. I have appointment in 30 minutes and I am sitting in the car for as long as I can without being late.

Nannapat1 Fri 06-Oct-23 08:53:50

I hate the smell of plug in air fresheners, probably because they give me a headache, cigarettes, cigars and pipes and bonfires.
I loved the scent of 'Christmas' oils, Early Grey tea and coffee, although I'm less keen on drinking the coffee than smelling it!

netflixfan Sat 07-Oct-23 01:06:52

I love Gucci Rush. Can’t wear it very often cos everyone here hates it.
