Seeing ‘hysterectomy’ on a post, I was reminded of my wee auntie who always talked about a ‘hysterical rectomy’.

She also liked ‘escapegoat’, ‘ignorant ramus’ and ‘ idiotsyncrasy’ , not to mention the ‘Muslim nappies’ ‘menstrual cyclone’, ‘ nuclear detergent’ and wallpaper which was ‘embezzled’ with a pattern. ’.

My grandson always called vinegar vigenar and I still do when he comes for his tea. A friends mum always said she’d like a glass of Libafrubamilch in a pub.
One of my bosses always said pacific instead of specific. Drove me mad.

Re ‘pacific’, have you seen the Mitchell and Webb ‘grammar Nazi’ sketch on YouTube? Hilarious!

Then there are those people who always say 'Draclear' and 'nucular' for Dracula and nuclear.

My mother used to call our Volvo a vulva. We didn't enlighten her because people of her age and background didn't discuss anything intimate and she would have been embarrassed, but it was a struggle to keep a straight face.

When I worked in an opticians a lovely old boy told me that his wife had "that Immaculate Regeneration" (Macular Degeneration)

My son when he was about 4 had a lovely expression that I liked and still sometimes remind him. He said "This is my flavourite dinner mummy" a very good new word to add to our vocabulary. He also used to get rather confused when he was old enough to "join the clubs " and could he have a "cub biscuit" which of course was the cubs and the jacobs club biscuit getting mixed up

Does anyone remember Hilda Baker (Not on your Nellie) or are you all too young? She was the mistress of malapropism 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Harris27 Tue 17-Oct-23 19:05:52

My mum asked the lady in the shop for dedicated coconut.

Callistemon21 Tue 17-Oct-23 19:06:36

Oh yes, Hilda Baker! 😁

My SisIL used to say "More wine? You'll become an alcofrolic!"

My mil used to talk about her Cotton Easter plant
Mine too grannybags and she also used pot purée.

Callistemon21 Tue 17-Oct-23 19:34:39

Our lovely home help who came when each new baby was born in our home delighted us children by saying that something red had gone in the washing machine and given our white socks a pink twinge.

We had a local Chinese restaurant called Ho Lee Chow, i misheard and said “Holy Child”? to the family’s delight.

I love the pink twinge story !
Asked to paint a muriel of scary dinosaurs on the bedroom wall of a child , who suffers from night terrors -I didn't know whether to laugh or cry .
I managed to dissuade the mother from her original choice and she was happy with the Thomas the Tank Engine muriel and so was her son .

Cali I remember the time when, as an eight year old, we had to read out loud at school. I drew the short straw and had to read the title of one chapter in the book (Pilgrim’s Progress?), which included the word ‘misled’. Oh, the shame and embarrassment I felt when I said mizzled! When the teacher asked if anyone else knew how to say it, no-one did. Oh the relief!

Callistemon21 Fri 20-Oct-23 17:18:03

I can sympathise, and think I only ever read it silently, Squiffy
And I still like to say mizzled to myself grin

Aunt called Covid 'covis'.
Funny thing Mil and her Sister called it the same.
