Woollen duvet - to buy or not to buy?

Having bought an expensive throw from a woollen mill in Wales a few years ago then a huge outbreak of moths so have had to darn it a lot - would never ever have a wool quilt in my house . Have finally won the battle but less 2 Persian and 1 Chinese rug now and any Wookiee or wool all sealed in plastic boxes with moth preventers in . I think I will have to live with pheromone traps and moth bombs for the rest of my life too .

I am considering trying a coverless duvet Doodledog do you have a recommended brand? Do they crease when you launder them? We always have a struggle putting a duvet cover on especially when the dog thinks it’s a game and joins in.

Yes, we were hit hard by moths several years ago and lost all our favourite rugs. I keep all my clothes in plastic bags and wouldn't buy another woollen rug or carpet. My lovely wool and cashmore coats ended up looking "corrugated" and I only buy synthetic ones now. I do have a couple of surviving cashmere jumpers but wouldn't even leave them out of a plastic bag overnight now.
I find most duvets far too hot, even in the winter, and sleep under a very lightweight down one all year round. My husband has an extra single duvet under his half.

They don't crease - you can tumble dry them or hang them on the line or over a bannister/heated airer. They dry very quickly. I'm told the cotton seersucker one is more difficult to dry, but I haven't got one of those - mine are the herringbone and one with stars on it. I am planning to get them for the spare beds too when the decorators have been. It is so much easier than changing covers, and they just feel cleaner.

I have one but found it a bit heavy so I put it under the bottom sheet and it was really warm and comfortable during the cold spell last winter

I looked at the coverless duvets when they were extensively advertised but I like nice, bright duvet covers and thought these were very dull. I would get bored with them.

I have a fitted sheet over the mattress, and in winter if I want to I put a throw over, as I would have with a traditional duvet. The whole point is that the cover is part of the duvet, so there is no need to use separate one. There is no need for extra sheets between you and the duvet, if that's what you mean. Why would you do that?

We bought the all seasons duvets from Devon Duvets and they are wonderful. I like the fact that they are completely chemical free, self cleaning (on the line for a day here and there in the summer) and the mattress topper from the same company has proved to be a godsend. We bought a memory foam mattress some years ago and suffered for several months with OH far too hot and sleepless. A new cotton, wool, silk and cashmere mattress and the Devon Duvets and mattress topper have made sleep so much easier. I would never have anything other than wool in future - it is so comfortable both winter and summer.

A wool wash is enough, which in my machine is something like 30 minutes, then it dries on the line, over the airer or on the banister, depending on the weather. I have two, but you can easily have it washed and back on the bed the same day.

Yes, I have a wool duvet from Baavet. I like that the filling doesn’t move around leaving barer patches. It’s warm and cosy, though we reverted to our feather and down lightweight duvet for the summer.

I don't know if a king size duvet would fit into my front loader washing machine.

I used to have a top loader, that would have coped.

I really wish I'd ordered a wool duvet instead of the cotton one we just received. It's quite heavy.

I’d be a bit wary of a woollen duvet. I have a Victorian house and bought some pure wool chimney draught stoppers for the two fireplaces. We subsequently had an invasion of carpet moths and the source was the woollen draught stoppers.

We've had carpet moths because we have woollen carpets! They are a bugger very difficult to get rid of. 🤞 I'm on top of the problem for the time being.

Are they the same as carpet beetles?

I hang bags of lavender in my wardrobe and in my storage bags with duvet or clothes in moths don’t like it and it cost me nothing as I’ve lavender in my garden

I don't think so, will look up carpet beetles.

No, they are different.
Carpet moths fly in, settle on the edges of fitted wool carpets, under furniture, lay their eggs then I think die.
If you see what look like grains of rice around the edges of a carpet, they are the larvae.

Try stuffing plastic storage bags up the chimneys...they work well, but remember to remove them, before you light the fire. !!

Totally natural product. And you will be supporting the British Wool Industry!

Might be a plan to insert Duvet into a plain cotton cover before covering with your chosen pattern. Just to keep those pesky moths at bay.
