Avoiding damp, mildew & black mould

I remember a thread a few years ago about how many younger people & people from warmer countries don’t always know how to avoid damp, mildew & black mould in housing - as the colder, wet weather is upon us and Mrs AmberSpyglass is about to get out of hospital following a nasty respiratory infection, can people share their top tips for avoiding this? I’m probably doing all of them, but I really want to make sure the house is as breathing-friendly as possible!

a dehumidifier really does suck the damp up and takes the moisturer out of the room.

also keepventilaion going, windows open is important

i hope Mrs Amber Spyglass recovers well soon.

Thank you! We do have a combo humidifier/fan, but it’s currently in hospital with her - I might get one or two for other rooms as well.

You said you have humidifier / fan. It should be a dehumidifier to prevent mould.
A lot of people emphasise ventilation, but opening windows when the humidity level outside is 90% + is only bringing cold, damp air into the house.
Use extractor fan in kitchen, bathroom to remove moist air. Some level of heat is needed in house and a dehumidifier is definitely useful.

I’ve had all sorts of problems in my house recently, including mould, and I’m thinking of getting an air purifier: not to use all the time but just every so often. It isn’t something I’ve ever considered getting before and I’m not sure how necessary or even safe they are but I feel as if m house needs blitzing in some way!
