and how long do you sleep.

I go to bed at 11pm and get up at 9 am. I fall asleep when my head hits the pillow and get up when I wake up. So 10 hours sleep. No loo breaks and no reading.

After we go on the last dog walk we're ready for bed, between 10 and 11, dog dependent. Neither of us read in bed . We wake up to happy dog feet scrambling to walk between 5 and 6.

I try to be in bed by 11, sometimes fail. I don't like going to bed early. Then I read or play games on my phone, or go on GN, until midnight. Then sleep until my alarm wakes me at 7.45.
I sleep well most nights.

I go to bed just after 9, and read my phone for about 45 minutes. No games or interacting with people, just read.

Then I turn my dvd of series 11 of Frasier on down low, give the dog a small biscuit and compose myself for sleep.

I get up at 05:30 when the alarm goes off. I like being up early.

I Know what all the experts say about blue light and devices and so on but this is what works for me.

I used to be a championship grade sleeper until chemo 9 years ago, when I developed insomnophobia. I don't know if that's a real word but I became petrified of not sleeping - so of course sleeping got harder and harder, and my mental health declined to the point of "well, we don't like to call it 'breakdown' these days".
I tried all the "clean" sleeping methods but all lying in the quiet darkness did was give me hours of time to panic about not sleeping. I came to dr ad the dawn chorus.

A little background TV I've always found soporific, so I tried that. Now it's refined to the same dvd every night. If I've dozed and missed a bit of the now well known script, I can think, "Oh, I CAN sleep", and that relaxes me to the point of dropping right off. Sometimes I wake up 7 hours later to a blank screen. Sometimes I wake up, restart it, and off I go again.

It's not perfect - I wish I could just go to bed and sleep like I used to but better this and good mental health than how it had become.
Last month I had to have my beautiful old dog pts very late at night. When I eventually got back I went through the same bedtime routine, and surprised myself by getting some sleep.

Finding what works is a great blessing, and Tough to all the advice that says it won't!!

I usually go up around half 11, read for half an hour or so or until my kindle smacks me on the nose, then sleep for about 7 hours. My MiFit tells me off if it’s five minutes less, seems happy if it’s five minutes more.

I occasionally wake up at around 4 or 5, and need another short read to get back off.

NotSpaghetti Mon 30-Oct-23 08:43:31

I think us night people are in the minority here!

Greyduster Mon 30-Oct-23 08:35:43

Unless I’m falling asleep in front of the tv, I go to bed at ten and read for an hour, or until the eyelids start to droop. I am usually up for the bathroom at about three or four and then if I’m lucky, I sleep until about seven. There are nights when I hardly sleep at all.

Casdon Mon 30-Oct-23 08:04:53

Many of us have a similar pattern, I also go to bed about 10, to sleep about 11, but wake up early, usually between 5 and 6. This morning, although I stayed up later to account for the clocks changing, I was awake at 4.30, aka 5.30 yesterday. It’s going to be a long day.

winterwhite Mon 30-Oct-23 07:59:28

I’d make a hopeless owl. I hate the dark and only undertake tricky things in the morning.
To bed about 11ish but OH is a great dawdler. I could never read in bed in the morning. I get up at 6 wash and dress and have a couple of hours doing odd jobs until DH is ready for breakfast at about 8.30. He’d make an equally hopeless lark.

Grandmabatty Mon 30-Oct-23 07:47:54

I'm usually in bed by ten. Then I read a little and then put on my audiobook. I sleep badly, usually wake twice or more and up to the loo. Then I wake most mornings between five and six.

Iam64 Mon 30-Oct-23 07:45:49

Bed by 9.30, read till 10 or later. Wake about 6 but if earlier relax and may fall asleep. Up to make a cuppa by 6.45-7 am

tanith Mon 30-Oct-23 07:22:06

I go up at 10ish, read or on my iPad for an hour I do sleep for 6 hours but wake at 5/6 most days.

Whitewavemark2 Mon 30-Oct-23 06:57:32

Yes, I look to be in bed by 9pm or earlier, then read. In the summer up by 6am, in the winter not so early but am awake and read.

I sleep well, but often with a break in the middle of the night say 2-3am. I was reading that this break is quite a normal sleep pattern.

Calendargirl Mon 30-Oct-23 06:55:31

10pm.

Usually average about 6 or so hours, get up at least once for the loo, hopefully get back to sleep.

Get up 6-6.30ish.

M0nica Mon 30-Oct-23 06:55:19

Up to bed at 10.00pm, asleep by 11.00pm. Up in the morning at 6.00am, assuming I have not slept too badly

I usually wake in the night, read for 10 minutes, but can spend longish periods 90% asleep, but not quite.

CoolCoco Mon 30-Oct-23 06:51:55

We go to bed 9-9.30. Read for a bit, then wake at 5.30 or whenever the cat sits on my head. Get up at 6 to feed cat and make a cup of tea, then go back to bed and get up around 7. 30. Occasionally wake in the night for a wee but usually go back to sleep straight away. 6-7 hours sleep seems to be the norm.

MamGu12

I live on my own bed about 10-30 always listen to audio book set timer for 45mins usually drop off and find I have missed a few chapters of book sometimes I can get back to sleep other times still awake and have to replay the missed chapters ,

So rather erratic sleep pattern wish I could sleep just 6hrs right through🤷‍♀️

I read that as "I live on my own bed." 🤣

kittylester Mon 30-Oct-23 06:38:30

Snap, Roses.

We wake at 5.30 ish after years of doing so. I go to bed at 9 to 9.30 but read for a while. I sleep well mostly.

RosesandLilac Mon 30-Oct-23 06:26:48

I’m in bed by 8 🙄, I read for an hour or so and usually sleep well until 6-ish. I’m definitely not an evening/night person!
I can easily get up very early, but staying up late is a struggle.

BlueBelle Mon 30-Oct-23 03:23:34

Usually between 10 and 11 and am usually up by 6.30 to 7 at latest
I bunny hop through the night which doesn’t bother me

Georgesgran Mon 30-Oct-23 01:15:06

I’m a night owl - usually go to bed around 1-2am. A loo break at 4.30 and I’m up between 6.30 and 7am. I don’t nap during the day. I believe we need less sleep as we age, unless we’re ill.

rubysong Mon 30-Oct-23 00:03:04

I stay up to midnight, do the wordle quordle and waffle, then start getting ready for bed. Then I read in bed for about 15 or 20 minutes. We usually wake up about 7.30. DH goes about 10.45 pm.

NotSpaghetti Sun 29-Oct-23 23:57:55

I try to get to bed at about midnight but if I don't force myself to go up I could quite happily be doing things till 3 ish.

I sleep seven hours pretty much irrespective of when I go to bed. Sometimes I wake up for an hour or so and maybe listen to a podcast- not very often.

I could happily stay in bed reading till lunchtime but feel guilty if I don't get up.
grin

I'm lucky. I don't usually have problems sleeping.... but I think I was born to function in the evening rather than the morning.

Charleygirl5 Sun 29-Oct-23 23:17:26

I am normally in bed before 11pm and read until midnight. Tonight I watched TV until much later than usual and then I had the bins to sort out.

I am up 2-3 hourly for the loo but I usually fall asleep as soon as I return to bed. I am normally up by 7.30 am but a lot earlier in the summer, when the days are lighter and warmer.

Theexwife Sun 29-Oct-23 23:10:35

I go to bed at 1, with a cup of tea and biscuits, read and look at social media until 3. I get up between 9.30 and 10.
