Keeping glasses clean 👓

I'm not boasting - just puzzled. I've worn specs since I was 11 years old ( a looooooong time ago!) and rarely clean them as they don;t often get dirty.
I wonder if that's because I wear them from getting up to going to bed. so I don't very often handle them. After showering they're usually steamed up so I just wipe them on a towel, and that's it for the day!( I DO take them off in the shower! )
I can understand why people who have different glasses for different things might need to clean them more often,
And someone mentioned makeup - I only use moisturizer, so that could be another reason for needing to clean them more often.

This isn't a cleaning response but it is about glasses! Last night I was out and about, left my reading glasses somewhere. They are gone forever apparently. In the words of the Bee Gees Tragedy! All I have to fall back on are several one legged pairs that won't stay on. Look at this for a fix! Two hair bobbles and a needle and thread... Heath Robinson ain't got nothin' on me!

A quick 'haaar' on them followed by a polish with my shirt hem..... Slob!
For a better job, or I'm not wearing something which doubles up for sparkling my specs, they get an occasional polish with a cloth my son bought me for my tablet.

Nearing 80 and wearing glasses regularly for the first time, I’m afraid as no one said anything about how to clean them, I’ve been putting mine in the dishwasher overnight.
Seemed sensible to me but what do YOU think?

My specs are so very expensive, something like £700, varifocals with coatings. I never ever wipe them on any cloth except a smooth microfbre cloth for specs. The sprays are good too but more expensive than using the water bath. I need to take very good care of my specs, the tiny scratches mount up if they are mishandled. Tissues, kitchen roll, t shirts etc a definite no.

I have at least six pairs of glasses (two are prescription sunglasses) but my favorite everyday, knock-around, I call them my “kitchen” glasses are at least 15 yrs old. Frames that is, I upgrade the lenses when needed. So they get dirty in a hurry.

Mostly I get hairspray film on my kitchen pair because I need to wear them when styling my hair.

I use soap and water, sometimes a window cleaner but always a soft cotton towel, on all my glasses.

Keep a small microfibre cloth recently washed in undiluted dishwasher cleaner like fairy liquid and squeezed and dried without rinsing… works well!

I always wash mine under the shower with hand soap just before I get in then leave them to drain on the sink.

Optician said washing up liquid, tissues and kitchen roll are definitely to be avoided.

Karmalady, which ultrasonic water bath did you get? Seems like it might be the answer to mine and DH’s problem with getting our glasses clean.

I follow the suggestion my Dad made, when you wash your hands in the sink rub a drop of soapy water on each side of the lens. Rinse then dry on a hand towel. Works a treat for me. No expense either!

Nandalot, it was about £33, bog standard one to clean jewellery as well as specs. Probably chinese, it is called icoco but not available now. There are plenty of others

Yes mine are expensive coated varifocal lenses also prescription for my sunglasses. But I happily wash and dry them in the bathroom every morning using the silky window cloth. They are fine.

Clean them every morning with a microfibre cloth, gently though as I've scratched them before. Another standby is wash with a baby wipe and polish with a tissue, that works well too. But rarely do that. I find the wipes you buy just smear it around.

I was just going to rub them with my jumper but thought better of it

During my teaching career, I always kept a glasses spray and cloth in my classroom. It's amazing how much better children read when they can actually see what they're reading! I used to provide my own kit, but maybe it should be standard classroom equipment (to replace the now redundant board rubber??)

I use wet wipes especially on the bridge and the legs behind my ears.My t shirt or anything at hand if out.
When I first taught it was National health glasses pink wire for girls brown for boys. I worked in an EPA area and not always were the specs dirty the little noses that held them were as well. I used to clean the gasses with a wet paper towel and was so tempted to do the little face as well.

others have given sensible advice so I will add the silly one. Make the most of looking around for the best looking person around or the person you have always wanted to get to know but never dared to and ask for their help as you are now in a plaster. Who knows what you might see when they clean them for you!!

I have varifocals, which I can’t read through and another pair for close up. I change glasses about 50 times a day, they are always dirty, smeared, finger printed. I clean each pair Every. Single. Time. I put them on.
It seems I cannot touch my glasses without leaving marks on the lenses. They drive me crazy.

karmalady thank you. I ordered An ultrasonic water bath. I've got a broken arm in plaster too and cleaning glasses is one of the very many things I can't do at present. Or not easily.

Wouldn't put mine in there having seen how scratched glassware gets overtime, and mine are cheapie glasses that get renewed whenever I lose them or sit on them (about every six months or so 😁)

Optician gave me a lens cloth called Hoya. I do the old-fashioned, unhygienic!, breath on lenses and then buff. Just tried it one-handed, it worked, leaning glasses on a pillow. Cloth is large which helps. Hope your arm is better soon 😍

I was told by the opticians to wash them in ordinary soap and warm water if they got greasy and in between times just to polish with the cloth in the spectacle case.

This was the advice from my optician too Redrobin.
