Can a hot water bottle stay hot all night?

I have just read a tip on Facebook how to keep a hot water bottle hot all night. Roll up 6 small balls of aluminium foil and put into the bottle before filling.
Well I shall give it a go as I have both...foil and a bottle and see what happens. Nothing ventured etc etc.

Would recommend an electric blanket ….

Costs a lot more money than a hot water bottle and doesn’t stay warm all night

I ve never heard of that but will give it a go tonight helterskelter

It's worth a try....and if it doesn't work I shall flatten out the balls of foil and re use!!! if I can get them out of course. Can't wait to go to bed.

Well now I'm intrigued. I'm going to have to try it!!!

It can if it’s an old fashioned stone one! I managed to get new rubber washers for my parents ancient ones! Water would be warm enough to use to wash in next morning!

Couldn't wait till bed time. I cut 6 strips of foil...which apparently will sharpen my scissors .. and rolled them into balls. Three shiny side inside three shiny aide outside not sure if it makes a difference.

I made sure they didnt obstruct the opening/spout and carefully poured the water in. Its now in bed and I shall test the heat when I go to bed at about 10.00. I should get out more!!!

the instructions form part of the safety provisions of a product.
this is not an intended use of the HWB, and it will not have been tested under those conditions.
this practice may adversely affect the performance or integrity of the HWB.
i urge caution.

Yes Welbeck thats sensible. Perhaps not the best idea. Well I have done it now and will see ....but maybe not do it again.

As you say I urge caution.

I saw a similar tip of putting coins in, I assume they work the same as foil in retaining heat.

The secret to keeping a hot water bottle hot all night is putting it in a well insulated cover.
My HWB gets filled at 10pm and is still good at 8am next morning.

HelterSkelter1 Sat 04-Nov-23 18:54:51

But does it let any heat out if it's very well insulated?

My fluffy covered hwb stays quite warm all night. Towards morning I undo the velcro fastening and put my hand in and it's lovely.

My wool cover keeps a hot water bottle warm until the morning. Works better than the fluffy ones I find.

My daughter gave me a sheepskin cover last Christmas, but the heat hardly comes through it. At the moment I use a doubled over brushed cotton pillowcase sewn into a bag for a HWB cover as it matches the duvet cover and lets enough heat through to keep me warm...until it goes cold.

BlueBelle Sat 04-Nov-23 21:43:50

I don’t like covers as it keeps the warmth in and I want the warmth out on me
I m happy to try it and will report tomorrow
I m the queen of hot water bottles and having never lived in a centrally heated house I have been using them since I was a toddler

I’ve got a faux sheepskin cover on my HWB. It was a gift many years ago (the HWB has been changed in that time!) and I love it. It allows just the right amount of heat out to gently warm you and is still warm enough in the morning that you could wash with the water, if you so chose.

No it can’t

HelterSkelter1 Sun 05-Nov-23 03:39:24

Sorry all. What a dismal failure. The bottle sadly stayed no hotter and I have just emptied it and removed the balls with tweezers.
Luckily its not too cold tonight. I shall steer clear of .Facebook "tips" in future!

BlueBelle Sun 05-Nov-23 04:26:38

Well its 4 30am ish and my hot water bottle is in the same lukewarm state (not quite cold) that it’s normally in so I m afraid the 6 little silver foil balls made no difference what so ever
Thanks for the tip and now I have the answer 😀

Aveline Sun 05-Nov-23 06:39:44

Oh. I was eagerly waiting to hear if the silver foil balls worked. Oh dear. What next?

Cabbie21 Sun 05-Nov-23 07:36:48

My wheat-filled bottle( looks like a hot water bottle with a cover, you heat it in the microwave) stays warm, though not hot, and you don’t wake up with a cold bottle beside you.

HelterSkelter1 Sun 05-Nov-23 07:41:35

Argymargy on the other Hot Water Bottle thread has recommended her Hottie microwave bottle. I may give that a go or a wheat filled one thank you Cabbie21. Lack of electric sockets in the bedroom close enough to the bed make an electric blanket a git difficult.

RosiesMaw Sun 05-Nov-23 07:49:03

Never mind hotties (they can BTW if the cover is insulating enough, I’ve never faffed around with tinfoil) the real issue though is -Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost over night?

Farmor15 Sun 05-Nov-23 08:51:22

I grew up with hot water bottles too, but always with a cover. The water going in was always very hot( just under boiling) but the cover meant it was comfortable to cuddle. In the morning the water was still lukewarm.
I wonder if those of you who find a cover doesn't let the heat out, don't use very hot water to fill?
