Festa - The John Lewis Christmas Advert

At first I was inclined to find the JL ad quite amusing but probably because I had seen 'Little Shop of Horrors'. I don't know what agency thought this up but don't think they have earned their undoubtedly huge fee.

I started off liking the Amazon ad but if I hear that music much more I think I’ll go mad. I also keep thinking if they fell off their toboggans they’d all be in A&E. A cushion wouldn’t help me: I wouldn’t be able to sit down on one let alone get up off it afterwards. The one that I really like is the Tescos ad because I could make no sense of it when I first saw it but it’s grown on me. Asda is a bit boring. Ever since I worked in market research I’ve been fascinated by it. I think the Amazon one is clever, especially showing older people. I hate Amazon and have tried not to use it but, the older I get the more I find myself depending on it. I’ve used it more over the past few weeks than I’ve ever done before and I’m sure lots of older people are finding that, too.

Not keen on the JL one, aldi Kevin the carrot one is my favourite.

I think the M&S ad rather sad. It certainly does not promote Christmas in a nice way but 'do as you want' & blow Christmas!! Amazon ad made me smile. JL ad pretty sad also!!!

I thought ‘Festa’ was something to do with ‘The Adams Family’ or ‘The Munsters’.

Well the one with ‘Uncle Festus’ in anyway.

I've sort of watched the JL one but it just reminds me of The Day of The Triffids.

Just ridiculous, not a bit inspiring.

Saw JL fir the first time last night what a waste of minutes gosh ridiculous no wonder I d missed it I have never been in a JL shop in my life and it won’t make me dash to find one
Prefer the Amazon one a bit more fun but totally fed up with them already and got another month to go 🤬

I have never been influenced to buy something by watching an advert. However, I have definitely been put off buying a product because of the advert!!.😏

Advertising is a funny game. I can count on one hand the amount of times I've actually gone out to buy something I saw on an advert

But companies spend millions on advertising. Keeping their name in people's minds, maybe?

The Christmas adverts drive/promote 'the brand' rather than items for sale. Generate much media attention and raise the profile - exactly what we are aiding and abetting here.

Mmm. Just watched the John Lewis advert - certainly different. Can't say it really resonated, however at least not overly sentimental and Andrea Bocelli is fab!

I hate and try to ignore all adverts.

The JL ad I quite like. M&S sadly not. So far the Amazon ad is my favourite. Makes me smile. Oh look said Mr C - you’ve got one of those cushions. Indeed I have. All I need now is a hill, some snow and a sledge .

I can’t recall my shopping decisions ever having been influenced by a Christmas tv ad. Does anyone really watch say the JL ad and decide that’s where they’ll do their Christmas shopping?

Not exactly stuff shown in the adverts, but in a weak moment I bought a cushion with the loved up penguins (Monty and Mabel??) on it, and pyjamas for the DGC. The spin off merchandise sells well.

As the proud and loving owner of a Venus Fly Trap - I love it. Made me cry a bit though.

Well I enjoyed it and my grandson was delighted to find Waitrose selling the toys and even real Venus Fly Traps if you want to try and keep one alive (I've never succeeded) I like the Amazon one too. It reminds me of the day we all bunked off from college to go tobogganing with a sheet of corrugated iron (don't ask!)

Don’t like M and S advert, Christmas is for sharing not being selfish, who paid for that wasted their money, I quite like Kevin the carrot.

Whether you like it or loathe it, the JL advertisement has certainly got us all talking. Time will tell if they have achieved their aim of increasing the Christmas footfall in the stores and boosted on-line orders.

But do these Christmas ads actually influence where we do our Christmas shop? Clothing maybe, but as for food, I know where I will be shopping. My usual.
I don't think 'Ooh, I must find an Asda, I like their Christmas ad the best'.

I also find those adverts which show Christmas tables positively groaning with food slightly distasteful when many are struggling to put food on the table these days.

Which makes the ad even stranger than it already is, we’re not in Italy after all.
I think it’s similar to Edgar the dragon ad in saying it’s alright to be different, but they don’t take the plant back into the house do they?

I think it’s a long time since JL did anything well, not just the increasingly awful Christmas ads. I am a retired Waitrose employee (“partner”) and from the stupid loyalty scheme to this stupid advertisement, I’m embarrassed to have been associated with them. They lost touch with their customer base long ago.

I haven’t seen many of this year’s Christmas ads mentioned so far, but others on the family WhatsApp group are talking about the Coca Cola one!
